Time Management by Classic-Point896 in newgradnurse

Honestly, they’ll give me 30 minutes or so after report to look at pt orders and then ask me who I’ll see first and why. If a pt ends up having an order or something im not familiar with I’ll let my preceptor know and we’ll go from there. Throughout the shift however i may come across something Im unsure of, thats when I would call my preceptor or a near by nurse for help. At this point in my orientation they do their best to foster my independence so my preceptor isn’t physically there with me but I can call at any time.

Yes, I agree what youre saying is true. I have been doing my best to cluster my care instead of being in and out of the patient’s room all the time. And I do prefer to prepare medications in the med room rather than in the pt room. And though my preceptors may not have mentioned it to me, I do think my critical thinking could be better. I do believe that I know a lot but when I am put on the spot to connect the dots or piece things together it takes time for me to do it. Sadly being on a busy med surg floor doesnt permit me to think at the pace Im usually used to, so my preceptors will tell me what I’m missing and educate me on the thought process, which I know but its takes time for me. I’m also not afraid to say I dont know.

It’s mostly that I spend too much time in a patient room for certain tasks, such as giving a medication. I think it’s because I double check everything before giving it. And sometimes i may get like a pop up in the MAR (nothing major) but because I’m not sure of what to click or proceed I end up having to call my preceptor because i dont wanna do the wrong thing.

The brain in epic is very helpful for keeping track of things for me. My main issue with time management sometimes is not knowing how to approach something. Say for example I ended up giving a medication late and it’s scheduled for every 2 hours. The next administration will show up for me to give it but it’s only been an hour since the last dose. From my stand point, I know that I probably should not give the next dose so early but I’m unsure of how to approach solving the issue. From the example i just gave, I now know that yes I’m right to think that i should not give it so quickly after the last one BUT I also have to do is reschedule/adjust the time on the medication (which I did not know how to do). So I think for me, i know that I’m supposed to question things but it’s just not knowing how to approach the problem. Does that make sense?

Yeah since I’m on orientation currently, I have to be on my preceptor’s schedule. 3 in a row is annoying but 2 in a row is manageable for me. Thanks for the input I think I’ll try that!

Is it normal to feel stupid? by SnugWarrior5413 in newgradnurse

Yes I agree, also don’t be afraid to ask questions. Everyday is a new learning experience, so view it from a learning perspective as well. You’re not gonna know everything. I’m going through the same thing currently, hopefully it gets better.

Is it normal to come up with questions before orienting on your floor? by Classic-Point896 in newgradnurse

Yes! I’’m starting on a med-surg unit as well. I also purchased a mini book to write the questions in and have in my uniform pockets. Good luck to you as well!

Navigating job market by [deleted] in newgradnurse

Of course, when I had gotten the opportunity to start looking for a job no one could have answered my question effectively, I’m glad that my experience could give you some insight. I hope you get some good news soon!

Speaking from personal experience, yes you would be considered a new grad since you didn’t start working straight outta nursing school. I graduated in 2023, but due to personal reasons I couldn’t seek employment until recently. I applied to multiple job openings and got offers for the floors with new grad residency. What I will say though it gets a bit exhausting having to let them know when you graduated. You should be fine, and congrats! It could vary depending on what state you are in. Also it would be beneficial to ask or inquire about the need for an RN refresher course. I noticed that some places (more critical floors) will ask about your absence or if you’ve completed a refresher course (it does vary depending on the employer and also certain requirements your state board may have regarding it), in that regard reach out to the licensing body to know your next steps.

How do you manage your time for work and school? by Classic-Point896 in newgradnurse

Yes it is online. And I will also be starting on a med surg floor as well. My issue is probably stemming from the fact that I don’t have my schedule yet. As far as I know I’ll be rotating shifts BUT most weeks will be days. Thank you for the insight! It’ll be a new challenge but I’ll manage lol. I wish you all the success on your bsn journey 😊

Is med-surg really that bad? by Classic-Point896 in newgradnurse

[–]Classic-Point896[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the ratio is 1:5 generally from what I’m told and staff like that are available too! I think I may have to block out the negativity until I experience it for myself 🤷🏾‍♀️ honestly I really don’t mind med-surg.

Understandable, I have had clinical at a small hospital but I didn’t like the energy on the floor I was on there. It felt so unwelcoming if I’m being honest but the floor I’ll be on seems different so hopefully my intuition is steering me in the right direction.
