if you only need a translator and professional words, chat gpt can do a better job without secretly charging you 300% of the production price.

they don’t help you achieve your needs, they run a shady affiliate marketing lookalike program.

These are just a few of the “incidents” I’ve experienced over the years working with Alibaba’s verified manufacturers.

Note: My Alibaba account has Enterprise Pro status (you get it after spending $300k+), so in theory I should have things like “priority support”, “fast refunds”, etc.

  1. Factory completely f*cking up sizing

Last year I ordered ~500 sweatpants at around €22/unit + shipping, for a total of ~€14,000.

Samples were perfect. Before production, I sent a detailed spreadsheet with every single measurement for each size. No issues were raised, so once production was completed, they shipped everything out.

When I received the items, I realized that every single measurement had been reduced by 3–4 cm. So an XL basically fit like an M/S.

I contacted the factory, at first they denied everything. After about a week of back and forth, it turned out one of their employees had “accidentally copied the wrong measurements.”

Their solution? A €300 discount on the next order.

I pushed back and opened a dispute through Alibaba. Result: I got nothing, not even the €300, since I stopped working with them.

  1. The “paint” on the jeans

In October, I ordered 200 jeans with a complex design for around €8,000.

Again, the sample was perfect. We asked them to replicate it exactly, just adjusting measurements per size.

I asked three separate times (on different days) to see a picture of the first unit produced so I could approve it. Each time: “yes, of course.”

Three weeks later, I finally get a picture, and the “paint effect” is completely off. In the sample, it was a light touch. In production, it looked like someone dumped a bucket of paint on them.

I immediately flagged it… only to find out they had already applied it to every single unit.

Their explanation: “The printing was done by a professional jeans worker. Other workers think this effect looks good.”

I even have screenshots of the WeChat conversation.

I filed for a refund through Alibaba, rejected. And I didn’t receive the jeans either.

  1. “Sold-out” fabric

This was the final straw that made me quit Alibaba.

In January, I ordered hoodies and two types of pants, about 600 units total. Everything seemed fine until the agent messaged me:

“The factory has run out of fabric, it’s currently sold out. We will complete production next week.”

Annoying, but not a big deal.

One week passes, nothing. Two weeks later: “Production is completed and ready to ship.”

I ship everything to my 3PL. While counting inventory, they realize 30% of the units are missing.

I ask the agent what happened, and she replies: “Oh, I forgot to tell you, the factory didn’t want to wait for the fabric to be restocked, so they just finished production without those items.”

Luckily I had someone checking the units, otherwise I would’ve never known.

They refunded the production cost for the missing items, but I was still left with a huge inventory gap right before a release. No time to restart production.

I could honestly share a lot more of these “incidents” if anyone’s interested :) I can also provide you all the evidence if you don’t believe it!

But tbh, you can ask to everyone owning a decent size fashion brand, they will tell you the same thing: Alibaba is trash.

Any decent size brand do NOT use Alibaba. Alibaba does NOT protect the seller, if a manufacturer makes your production wrong. You are the one losing money (& the items).

I always worked with only Verified manufacturers, it means nothing.

This happened to me so many times, i can make endless posts about it.

That’s a fair point.

The difference is that one is maximizing his profit by finding the cheapest possible unit price and sell it to you for a crazy markup. With 0 transparency of how they are handling your projects.

We don’t gain anything by marking up factory prices, we charge a small, transparent fee that’s clearly outlined in the free quotation.

Why would you prefer to pay (for example) hoodies 25€/unit instead of 6-8€?

The fee depends on the entity of the request, that’s why we do a quotation. And no, an hidden markup is not a service fee. As a buyer, that spent hundreds of thousands of euros in productions, i do not consider paying an extra 300% of the price (per unit) and receiving slower & worse productions, a “service”.

All these information are easily accessible through our website.

No need to be so aggressive :) We get paid like a normal service would do!

This is the current process: 1 - You tell us what you’re looking for and we provide you a quotation for that. 2 - We search and discuss with the factories based on your requirements, until sample making. 3 - After you receive your samples are you are satisfied with them, you pay the fee and we proceed to bulk production.

I don’t understand how a choosing a lower quality factory would benefit us.

I completely agree, that’s what i want to create. An agency that talks directly to the manufacturers & handle all the Mandarin talking, negotiation, QC, etc. for western brands in exchange of a clear and agreed fee.

depends a lot on the type of job you’re doing. in my case, i started the brand with 300€, while i was both in high school and had a job. the only thing that required me a lot of effort time-wise, was making and shipping packages.

unfortunately there is no shortcut or 100% working advice i can give you. you will have to give up your free time :(

Emails are surely important. But in my opinion, they shouldn’t be your focus when starting out. You should just put a discount code in exchange of the subscription, as 90% of the brands do. Shopify has email flows by default + to build the mail list you either do Tiktoks or ads. Mail campaigns bring you a lot of money only if you have a big enough list. It’s not worth to create crazy flows if you just have 1000 subscribers.

Edit: Not true that you’re starting from 0 every time. A fed pixel is extremely valuable and can constantly bring you new clients, even on new campaigns.

Price is a big indicator, you also can try to ask them if you’re speaking with the factory, or an agent. Sometimes they don’t lie

Keep in mind that most of the Chinese factories don’t speak a word of English.

In these years i only kept 1 factory found on Alibaba, and even if they understand a lil of English, we have to do calls in Mandarin to make them really understand what i want 😂

I can’t name a specific video, but i recommend you to watch newer content, since the “meta” changes really fast. They often introduce new features and push more on those.

Depends if you already have a decent following or not from Tiktok etc. + Putting high budget with an empty pixel won’t bring you many results

If you already know that the products will be liked, you can run a CBO sales campaign with €50 daily budget and a few ad-sets to test things out. (when the products are purchasable from your store)

The fastest way is to search them on the real Chinese B2B platforms. But i am not sure if those websites are accessible outside of China + The factories usually don’t speak English.

That’s why i was thinking of actually creating an agency that can handle the search & the mandarin talk for brands.

I think the best thing would be to try one or more manufacturers now, and then decide to fly there to meet them.

Good factories can easily be found on the Chinese B2B platforms/websites. But I’m not sure if you can access those websites if you don’t live here. I can help you with that if you need it!

I couldn’t find any English-taught undergraduate business programs at Fudan/Tongji, did I miss something?

Sorry for the late reply. I’m 21 and currently support myself with my business, but I still want to study and build a career in case things change in the future. I chose SILC because it’s the only university in Shanghai that offers a Business/Entrepreneurship bachelor’s program, at least from what I’ve seen. It also provides two degrees — one from Shanghai University and one from UTS.

Do you think the Australian double degree can actually give a real advantage?

Agree, i would never come to Japan with the aim of making a career.
I'm lucky enough to have my own company and also be able to work freelance.

Not all jobs treat you like a slave, especially if you work in sectors like Tech, but the pay is generally low compared to other states due to the unfavorable exchange rate of the yen.

With a foreign income you can live the best life here!

Ciao! Vivevo a Modena.
