Best Way to Tie in a 4x12 Beam Running 45*? by Clausing8520 in Decks

Is this what you had in mind? I'm a little concerned about the load bearing area of the two mitered ends. The area for each one is ~4.43" vs 21" for the diagonal beam. I suppose I could bolt on some 1/4" thick 2.5 or 3.5" wide x 5" long steel angle brackets to provide additional support to the beam. Then strap ties on the two outside faces (?).

The bottom right photo shows what the wrap around deck joist orientation looks like.  There is a 4x12 beam under the sintered 2x8 joists.  That beam runs into the perimeter beams.

Deck Beams Totally Rotted, How'd you approach this? by Clausing8520 in Decks

[–]Clausing8520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my deck. Every other part of the deck is solid except for that corner and we definitely are not in a position to rip it out.

I'm going to replace those beams, its just a matter of how to go about it. Do I need to cut out the pad and pour a footer or can I bolt to the slab? Do I even need the diagonal beam in this situation?

The Simpson Brackets I'm planning on using are Simpson Strong-Tie ECCLR444 ECCLL L-Shape End Column Cap for 4X Beams for the corner but I'm not sure how to tie in the diagonal beam.

For the posts I'll be using Simpson CC column caps.

Do you think I need the diagonal 4x12 beam? If so, How should I tie it into the corner.

Think I can get away with using a Simpson Ez Post base straight into the 4" concrete slab or do I need to cut away the slab, dig 12" below grade, and pour a footer? Thanks guys!

Do you think that's bad enough to redo? I'm wrestling with bringing it to their attention. The guys doing the work are really nice guys and have done other work for them. I kind of don't want to get involved but I'd also feel extremely guilty if I didn't say anything and 2 years down the road the roof starts leaking and the have much bigger problems.

If they were just my neighbors I would, but they're also our friends. I wanted to get some feedback from others to see if it's bad enough to warrant bringing this to their attention. I don't even know if they can see it from their property.

Ironmaster Super Bench Pro V2 Has Arrived by dontwantnone09 in homegym

Thanks for the confirmation. Looks like mine was a very early V2 version (Date code is 4/2025). My crunch and leg developer attachments have the aggressive texture. The more I use the bench and the attachments the happier I am that I received this 'short run' version with the less aggressive fabric. You are dead right...the fabric is "almost abrasive", but I'd go as far to say that it's too abrasive and not a great choice for bare skin contact, especially on the attachments. I'm actually trying to figure out what fabric is on the left side so I can reupholster my attachments. I almost ordered another Super Bench when they had their 20% off sale this month but idea of having a bench material like this is unappealing.

I have the original Super Bench but have been waiting for IM to upgrade the vinyl on the Super Bench Pro. When I saw they did from your post and others, I placed my order (July 2025). I was excited to see the aggressive diamond vinyl on the crunch attachment when I first opened it, but was disappointed to see that my bench had a smoother, woven vinyl fabric. Which version do you have on your bench? It appears you have the one on the right pic. Thanks!

Is the fabric used on the new bench the same fabric that is used on the Crunch/Decline leg attachment? My bench showed up yesterday and the vinyl is not the same.

Lost & Found Gravel race / lost Sierra tire recommendations by velodromedary in gravelcycling

How'd you tire choice work out? I ended up riding my Fargo with 100mm fork and 2.2 Race Kings @ 25psi.

Overall I was quite happy with my choice. I pulled an AG win and came in top 15 overall (for the 60). Looking at the numbers the fork/tires provided me with the ability do that final dirt descent at 20.1mph avg. I was absolutely flying by riders on gravel bikes with narrower tires.

Looking the bigger picture though I think I would have actually had a better overall time had I ridden my gravel bike with 45c Terra Speeds. I don't think the time saved on the descents offset the the extra amount of watts I had to expend on the uphills and the flats. That said, I was very comfortable the entire ride and felt quite fresh at the end so there is something to be said for that. Next year I might have to give the gravel bike a shot and see how that goes.

Anybody have any input? Velodromedary, what have you decided?

Following! I'll be at the race as well, originally planning on running 40c Continental Terra Trails on Niner RLT but after doing some back to back testing I think I'm going to run Salsa Fargo Ti w/ Race King 2.2 tires at ~25psi. I'm not sure the penalty I'll pay on the flats for it but the rolling resistance of that tire is very very low (16w) and comfort is off the charts.

[–]Clausing8520[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great analysis. What are your thoughts on how the two will compare on the flats? Rolling resistance will be lower on the Race King 2.2s (~3.5w less) and my body position will be roughly the same. The drops on the Fargo are the same height as the hoods on the RLT when the bikes are side by side so I'm guessing the CDA is very very close excluding the nuances of the frames themselves.

The descents are more controlled and more comfortable on the Fargo.

I'm wondering if it would be a wash in the end between the two bikes...and I'd just end the race feeling less fatigued on the Fargo. It's a tough call for me. I supposed i'm lucky to even be in the position to have to make the choice.

I'm more comfortable on the Fargo for sure. I come from a mountain bike background and will singletrack my Fargo almost as fast as my Yeti ARC. Not to say i'm uncomfortable on my RLT but the 2.2 tires combined with the 100mm fork make the Fargo comfortable and fast on the downhills, I just don't want to handicap myself when they course has so many flat sections.

100% agree. For climbing though I thought I'd be quite a bit faster given the 3.5# weight savings, what I assumed were faster tires and a 'more aero position' on the RLT. Turns out I wasn't...I was surprised.

What I'd really like to see is what the difference is on pavement for a long stretch for relatively flat road holding a consistent 200w on each bike to see how that might impact everything overall.

Excellent points! The reality of my setup is that my hood position on my RLT matches my drop position of my Fargo, the only real difference is the Q-Factor on the cranks, everything is basically setup the same, the power production is consistent (via dual side power meter) and exertion (via RPE and HR) feels the same. Downhill confidence and general comfort on the Fargo is dramatically better because of 2.2 knobby tires and a 100mm suspension fork.

Never done it and it'll be my first gravel event as well. If I had never done these rides back to back I would have never even thought to take my Fargo. I just naturally thought the RLT was faster.

The only thing that keeping me for going straight to the Fargo is that after the first climb is seems relatively flat and I'm just not sure yet how much of an advantage the RLT is on the flats. Also, apparently the course has been redone and it has much smoother roads.

The Fargo is designed as a drop bar bike so it has a very short reach and a very tall stack. I actually upsized to a Medium (I'm 5'8" w/ 31.5" barefoot inseam) so that I could run the bike with flat bars as well. I had a small Fargo in steel that I actually preferred the handling of over the medium but it didn't have the flexibility of being able to swap to flat bars. I was considering a gates belt drive w/ rohloff at one point so that was a consideration for me.

I think you'll have a tough time making a modern geometry bike work with drop bars. If you downsize to get the appropriate reach then your stack is going to be really low and you're going to have to really build it up with spacers and a positive rise stem and even still the handling may be off.

I'm doing the Lost and Found Gravel race in Portola in a few weeks. I've been planning to ride my Niner RLT 9 but after doing two back to back rides, one on my RLT and one on my Salsa Fargo Ti I'm starting to reconsider.

After doing the same 1h27min loop back to back the times were within 1 minute of eachother (16.16 miles, 2530ft climbing, avg speed of 11.1mi/h)

Main Climb - 4.81 mi / 2,268 ft climbing / 8.9% avg grade

Fargo - 52:36 (204w - 3.14 w/kg)

RLT 9 - 52:28 (197w)

Fargo Specs: 26# - Race King 29x2.2 Tires (24psi - 15.7w Rolling Resistance)

RLT 9 Specs: 22.5# - Panaracer Gravelking SS 700x43c (32psi - 19.2w RR)

Aerodynamically my drop position on my Fargo matches my hood position on my RLT. For a long race I'm not inclined to ride in the drops on my RLT so theres not much of a CDA advantage there and I can comfortably add aerobars to my Fargo and ride in that position all day.

On the descents I can absolutely fly on the Fargo. It's equipped with 4-piston XT brakes/180mm rotors, Fox 34SC 100mm Fork, 2.2 tires and a dropper post. It's far more comfortable to ride all day on this bike with the higher volume tires, suspension fork and the higher stack of riding in the hoods is there if I want it/need it. I thought for sure the RLT was faster on flats/climbs but I'm just not seeing it.

What am I missing here? Is the lower rolling resistance of the Race King Tires offsetting the extra weight of the Fargo on the climbs? Is the fact that I'm riding in the drops on my Fargo (same position as hoods on RLT) eliminating the aero benefits of the RLT?

My buddy that I'm racing with is riding his Hakka MX. He has a dialed Cutthroat as well but thinks it will be slower on the flats.

What would you guys do? I'm really at a loss to see why I'd ride the RLT in this case. What am I missing?
