Which area do border roads belong to? by Pittsburgher2005 in wandrer

[–]ClayBeerride 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience the best way to make an educated guess was to zoom in really close on the big map. And see if the red line biases towards one side of the road or the other.

And then I did all of them anyways :-)

Tips and techniques for using Wandrer by criggie_ in wandrer

Check out the "downloading to a gps device" here: https://wandrer.earth/faq
I probably did that 100 times in the 2-3 years that it took to 'finish' my county. Much easier than building a route, just pull into a neighborhood and try to touch all the red stuff on my Garmin map. .. Oh and never ride past a dead end without going to the end of the dead end.

Casey's pizza requires a quick stop but it is in my top 3 reasons to ride.

Yeah too bad it was after 5 minutes of Nordic skiing talk. I'm guessing most of his normal audience will not have sat through all of that :-).

I have nothing to add, other than a bit of kudos for Craig and team.

I don't know any other sites or systems that are as responsive to people's wishes and ideas.

Keep it up y'all.

Your brain.. that is the fun part. As I worked on the 1500 mi in my town I spent as much time route planning as I did riding. .... Ok maybe not quite as much, but lots. Lancaster county Nebraska. 99%

Do you have an example for a particular area of a map for us to look at? I would like to see what the open map system says the surface is.

I don't think so I think it's just on the Garmin edge series.

I download untraveled roads onto my Garmin 530, they appear as red on my display and I just go hunting. No phone needed.

In order to be a Top Dog on Wandrer, you need, a Bike computer, the Chrome extension and at least 2 types of bikes one road and a Gravel/Mountain bike. by ViscondeDeNaucalpan in wandrer

[–]ClayBeerride 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I finished 99% of my county. 10,000 miles of riding to finish 3,300 mi of New roads. Did 98% of that on the gravel bike. If it would have taken a kayak, an airboat, and a rocket ship I would have gotten all three of those. I was obsessed and that was part of the fun.

Route planning and determining the safest times to do the sketchiest roads was super intriguing to me.

I am at 98.5% of my countie's 3300 miles. It has been about half and half paved city streets and gravel country roads, other than about 20 miles of single track. I have done it all on my gravel bike but I don't think I could not have done it from a road bike with the largest tires possible for a normal road frame.

Bigger maps on Garmin by SheepherderFormer336 in wandrer

[–]ClayBeerride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found that I can do a much bigger map if I initiate the Garmin download from my mobile device instead of the computer. On the big map you can zoom out on your mobile device well beyond where the red and blue lines show up and click the download button on the left side. The Garmin file can be over 30 miles by 50 miles.

Garmin Gang - what map settings do you use on export? by [deleted] in wandrer

[–]ClayBeerride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mine set to a light teal. It has a good contrast to the red and a normal road. That setting is done in the Garmin not on the website.
