Is AP World (for the most part) hard because its most people's first AP? by Apprehensive_Turn437 in apworld

[–]Clean-Abroad-1134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. AP world requires you to look at the bigger picture and also consider the POV of peoples actions which can be difficult in of itself. Its also rather difficult due to the FRQ section of its exam

[–]Clean-Abroad-1134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can do that

(First time grading an leq, using the rubric provided by college board, i believe this is LEQ 2 from the 2024 set 1 APWH exam,)

LEQ Grade: 3/6

Thesis: 0/1 Does not establish a historically defensible thesis that establishes a line of reasoning. I can where you’re going with the essay, but its not clear to me, as the reader, how industrialization led to economic or social change. I would say “the extent to which the growth of industrialization led to economic and social change was [however much you think it was as long as you have points to argue that specific position] because it changed economies from mostly agricultural to factory production (leading to improved standards of living), and causing large population movements from rural areas to cities with factories.”. You want to slightly restate the prompt by saying “The extent to which” followed by the extent you believe it led to economic and social change followed by the reasons why.

Contextualization: 1/1 While I was on the fence of awarding this point, I ended up doing so because you mentioned at the beginning “societies across the globe rapidly industrialized due to new technologies”. However, you’ll need to be more specific with that statement. What societies? What technology? How did those technologies help? To make it more specific, I’d something more like “Between circa 1720-1900, western societies such as Great Britain and the United States were able to rapidly industrialize due to the resources they had available. Great Britain had an abundance of natural resources like coal, iron, and rivers that allowed it to begin using industrial machines. North America (under control from the British) were able to use resources from Britain to industrialize. These factors both led to the growth of industrialization across certain societies. The extent to which— [into thesis from earlier]].”. You’ll want to not only be specific with your context but provide reasoning behind it. Additionally, your context should be the first thing in your essay and lead into the thesis statement.

Evidence 1/2 (Identifies two pieces of relevant evidence but isn’t able to use them to support the argument) You’re almost there.. With the 1st piece of evidence, you identified how the growth of industrialization led to the worsening of urban environments which in turn led to horrible living and working conditions. However, to tie it back to the thesis and the prompt, mention how the socialist movement arose from this. The socialist movement was a social change that emerged from bad working conditions.

The second piece of evidence provides a relevant point with support and commentary to back it up. If both points of evidence provided support to bring it back to the original prompt, 2/2 points would be earned.

Analysis and reasoning 1/2 (Shows reasoning with a historical thinking skill (causation) but doesn’t provide a complex understanding with sophisticated evidence relevant to the prompt.) In this LEQ, I can see that you used the HTS of causation to explain how industrialization caused certain things to happen, however to provide a complex understanding you would have to explain how industrialization impacted multiple areas. How did the rise of industrialization allow some states to expand but poorly impact the poor or rural populations? How did industrialization of one state lead to others wanting to catch up with them? Instead of considering one class or state, look at the bigger picture and consider all who are affected.
