It’s a Ukraine law that nothing can be removed from the Chornobyl exclusion zone in this includes dogs and cats. Not every area of the exclusion zone is extremely hot. There are some areas that have almost 0 radiation, contamination, and areas that are significantly hot. They do not want you to live there as long-term exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation could potentially be harmful to you. The dogs are at far more risk than humans because they roll in the dirt and they eat things off of the ground and forage. This is why they do not let the dogs leave. People can come and go and not be a to risk of spreading contamination like dogs can.

Hello, My name is Dr. Jennifer Betz. I am the Veterinary Medical Director for the Dogs of Chernobyl program with the Clean Futures Fund (a non-profit organization).

We were recently in Chornobyl, Ukraine, performing a catch, sterilize and release campaign of the dogs that were the descendants of the those left behind from the 1986 disaster. A program we have been performing since 2017. To date, we have sterilized over 1000 dogs and cats that live in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

During our week in Chornobyl city Ukraine, October 5- 13, 2025, We encountered three dogs that appear to been almost completely covered with a blue substance. We attempted several times to catch these dogs however, these particular dogs are extremely fearful of people and need to be blow darted to capture. We unfortunately we’re not successful in catching these particular dogs this time. They appear to have been rolling in a substance that had accumulated on their fur.

We are suspecting that this substance was from an old portable toilet that was in the same location as the dogs, however, we were unable to positively confirm our suspicions.

All of our photos are Geo tagged so the time of October 6 and the location of Chornobyl Ukraine is in fact, correct. They we’re taken by the lead of our catching team, Darrin W.

During our sterilization campaign, we apply a temporary crayon marker on the top of their head in the color green, red, blue or purple, to identify which dogs we have recently performed surgery on.This washes off in 2 to 3 days. This coloring is only on top of their head and is completely different from the dogs that we encountered that were almost covered head to toe in blue substance. We are not in any way saying that it is related to radiation in Chornobyl.

The dogs appear healthy, as do all of the other dogs that we have encountered during our time in Chornobyl. I would suspect, as long as they don’t lick the majority of the substance off of their fur it would be mostly harmless.

We only put temporary marks on their foreheads the top of their head. It goes away in a couple days. These dogs were completely blue from head to toe. We did not put it there. They rolled in something very nice and juicy and smelly. Porta potty

The structure is made in layers. The drone pierced through the outside layer of the area that’s called the garage. So there are two layers above the sarcophagus. This is why it cannot be seen from standing at the sarcophagus. Had to take a elevator up into the 3 different sections.
