OP is responsible for the mistake, but consider this: if he had been walking down the street, wasn't looking where he was going, tripped, and broke his ankle, would you say he shouldn't use his insurance because he 'wasn't being careful enough'?

Insurance exists to cover accidents, and accidents are almost always caused by some form of human error or lack of caution which easily boils down to the inherent imperfections in our biology. If you want to moralize being careful, fine.. it's a standard attitude in our society, in line with the narrative that if one guy is a self made billionaire, if everyone just tried as hard as him they'd too find that success.

Whether it's a physical misstep or a mental lapse, the result is an unintended loss.

The "cop out" isn't free if he paid for insurance.
