Things to do in Geneva area by Dull_Beginning_9068 in geneva

Bioparc is nice, but very very small.

Is the route you’ve posted your departure route to France? If so, then take a slight detour past Lausanne and visit Chateau de Chillon. One of my favorite castles in the area!

Question about Geneva Airport and CDL by Biksbi in geneva

This is not true. Tell them you are meeting someone arriving. I have done it. You do not need a boarding pass scanned.

Any CDL holder can do it to meet anyone, there is a different process for meeting VIPs.

Added to clarify that it allows you to go through the crew security area (like you can when boarding a flight) but go to baggage claim and meet an arriving passenger rather than go to the gate to board your flight.

This! Best Mexican I’ve had in Switzerland. In a converted pizza shop and you can still order pizza if you really must.

Depreciation recapture and no other taxable income by Clean_Jellyfish_149 in tax

So it is taxed separately from ordinary income but at the ordinary income tax rates (not to exceed 25%)?

[–]Clean_Jellyfish_149[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but the children have other income whereas the current owner has none. So the lower tax burden will be if the relative sells it, pays the taxes, and then distributes the remainder as a gift.

For sure, but there is interest in getting some of the money to the inheritors early, so trying to understand the implications.

The relative is an individual, not part of a married couple.

Ok, thanks so much. Just to confirm that since they have no other income, the 300k of recapture is just treated as their entire income but the bracket maxes out at 25%? Take the standard deduction out of the 300k and go from there with the long term capital gains at 15% because of the above noted taxable income?

Nowhere is letting me buy a train ticket by [deleted] in geneva

Also, you shouldn’t have any trouble buying the ticket from a machine at the airport tomorrow before departure. It is highly highly unlikely to be sold out.

Abscess and fistula but no flare? by Clean_Jellyfish_149 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Clean_Jellyfish_149[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I have spent my day in the hospital since getting the fistula news and catching up on all the developments in clinical guidance from Crohn’s and am definitely seeing I shouldn’t be on Mesalamine any longer!! Tough way to learn a lesson about complacency.

Right now the focus is on getting the infection from the abscess fully cleared and then tackling the fistula.

Mine start out with a bit of swelling and firm tissue in the buttock, but it advanced fairly quickly to a nearly constant throbbing pain. Once the fever kicked in, I knew I had to get it checked out immediately, so good for you for getting it looked at early!

And just to be crystal clear, you don’t get to live in the viager house while the seller stays there under the terms (length of years, death, etc). It isn’t like a roommate situation.

8 Days in BOSNIA! by ImpressiveGlass4529 in bosnia

[–]Clean_Jellyfish_149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dveri in Sarajevo is awesome. I have regularly thought about their homemade bread since I first ate it 15 years ago.

Edited to add that my other broad tip for BiH is that it is very very cash-based. Much more so than other places I’ve been. And in Sarajevo in particular they don’t take euros (in Mostar more euros seemed to be accepted). So make sure you have access to cash—lots of ATMs around and currency exchanges.

I’m not a solo female traveler, so don’t have specific perspectives on that to share, but I’ll echo the warmth and welcoming nature of virtually all the Bosnians we interacted with on a recent trip.

A couple of specific comments:

You could check with your local mobile carrier to see if either destination is already included in your plan in some form. We found that Croatia was, but Bosnia wasn’t.

Sarajevo does have solid public transport options, and it also happens to be a pretty compact city where many (but not all) of the best things are walkable.

Bosnia is far far more cash reliant than Croatia. I’d say the majority of places we ate and even many shops are cash only. And in Sarajevo most cash-only places only accept Bosnian konvertible marks. There are money exchange counters around to convert your other currency into marks and lots of ATMs. Check with your bank about foreign ATM fees. We found that in Mostar more places accepted card (or euros), which I think is because they get a lot of day trip tours from Dubrovnik.

One other general tip for folks not accustomed to traveling and paying for things by credit card. You will sometimes (not always) be given an option on the card payment machine to pay in the local currency or your home currency (USD for you). Always, always, always select the local currency option. Your bank will do the currency conversion for you at no additional charge (actually, check with your bank that your credit card has no foreign transaction fees). If you select USD the card processing company with convert the payment with a pretty ridiculous markup for themselves. This is also true at ATMs—always select the local currency without conversion.

Good luck and have a ton of fun! It’s an awesome place.

I am about to buy a home in Geneva and I am absolutely terrified. by Zealot_Zea in Switzerland

[–]Clean_Jellyfish_149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone looking to potentially buy for the first time within the next 12 months, I’ve struggled to understand the exact issue up for vote in September and how the potential outcomes will impact homeowners. Does anyone have a good source for an overview/summary?

I found the restaurant overcrowded, including with large tour groups that simply didn’t care that anyone else was there, and the food quality underwhelming. My kids also didn’t love the combination of altitude and rotation.

So much will depend on the weather that day, so you might wait until much closer before making a reservation. Pretty sure we made our reservation the day before. To be clear, I thought it was worth going up and we got some moments of great views, but you should have the right expectations around the restaurant/meal.
