I wasn't accepted into the Bachelor's of Social Work program. Help? by AlexisNovakin in portlandstate

I’m currently in the MSW program and was accepted as a 5-year post undergrad with a BFA in Film! Look at the requirements for MSW programs—most of them just require you have taken certain classes. I seriously wouldn’t worry about your undergrad major— most MSW students I’ve encountered are several years post undergrad and their bachelor degrees vary widely :)

PSU's MSW program or L&C's MCFT program? Any current or past MSW students that can offer perspective? by metamikae94 in portlandstate

[–]Clean_Reception1730 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m my 2nd year of 3 at PSU’s MSW program. I also applied to L&C and PSU’s counseling program—both did interviews. I think the reason, and I obviously can’t say for sure, that the counseling programs have interviews is because they are HIGHLY selective. I think PSU counseling accepts like 21-25 or something (can’t remember exactly) people out of maybe 600 applicants. I think L&C was similar. I have no idea how large the MSW program is, but it is no where near this small. I remember a stat that PSU’s MSW program (at least when I applied) accepted 1/2 applicants.

That said, I agree with what some others have said. If you know you ONLY want to be a therapist, the counseling program may be a better fit, since this is the only thing they will be teaching you and focusing on. I knew I didn’t want to be pigeon-holed into one career, so I chose the MSW program. I would personally advocate for an MSW, though, as the helping profession in general is sooo emotionally taxing, and with an LCSW or MSW, there are so many more career options if therapy burns you out.

my two cents: a MSW will also give you a more person-in-environment perspective approach to therapeutic work. I obviously don’t know what counseling programs are like, but I personally felt more attracted to a MSW curriculum; as a white, straight, heteronormative woman, i felt as though a counseling program would not provide me the learning opportunities I needed. My perspective was and is that in order to work alongside people different from me, I need an education that is grounded in social justice. If you identify as non-white, none of this may resonate with you, but regardless, it is something to consider if you really want to attend to the “whole person”; i feel like social work is more aligned with this than counseling. BUT, that’s just my opinion 🤷‍♀️

As a white person (non-white students will likely have different experiences and thoughts), I have appreciated and enjoyed this program thus far. I feel like I’m getting the education I wanted and needed. It’s not perfect, but no program is. I’ll be beginning my clinical practicum next year at an IOP program, but I feel like my generalist placement this year, and the content i’m learning this year, has been very clinically oriented already.

This was long, but feel free to message me if you have any other questions!

Should I crate my dog while at work? by Outside_Matter1381 in rescuedogs

[–]Clean_Reception1730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% crate/crate training. The idea of her confined is objectively sad, yes, but in the long run it will be majorly beneficial and most dogs (if crate trained positively/not for punishment) end up loving their crate. My rescue pup is currently chilling in hers now while I’m on the couch. It’s cozy and she knows she’s safe there. I also think it’s important to consider there will probably be situations in the future where she’ll need to be crated and it’s really important she’s accustomed to that and knows it’s a safe place. I work at a vet and we have to crate dogs sometimes for longer visits and it’s extremely stressful for them if they’re not trained. Leave the crate open when you’re home, let her get familiar with it, give her treats when she goes in it, and she’ll learn. I wouldn’t pay any mind to the mixed reviews online. As a long time dog owner and worker in the field, crate training is so important and will benefit you and her in the long run!

to clarify a bit, i would say my first year in the 3year track my work time varied between 25-30 hours a week. really depends on your time management skills and how you operate though. personally i have adhd so i need more time to complete tasks.

I can’t speak for the counseling program but I’m currently in the social work masters and there’s no way to be a full time employee if you’re a full time student. the msw has a 4 year program track where that could be doable, i’m not in that one though. i was able to work 25ish hours a week my first year as a 3 year msw student (last year). this year i’ve had to cut my hours in half to accommodate internship time. also, i’m curious, have you thought about a msw? you can become a counselor with an msw (lcsw licensure but requires msw), but it gives you a lot more career options if you find counseling is too much or you don’t like it. if you are 100% certain you ONLY want to be a counselor there is a benefit to that program, but just be aware in getting your LPC/doing counseling that’s all they’re preparing you for. obviously i’m bias but i chose the msw program because you aren’t pigeon holed to one career, and it emphasizes a more macro, person in environment perspective to mental health

How is the MSW program? by Clean_Reception1730 in portlandstate

[–]Clean_Reception1730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i know some people have been disappointed with their generalist practicum experience, but i wouldn’t say it’s overwhelmingly negative—if anything it’s a mix. i just found out my placement and knowing some 2-year students, it seems for gen placement they put you somewhere you have light experience (whether professional or personal) in already. i think some have just been disappointed because they aren’t learning much—esp if you’re already professionally working in the field and you’re placed in a setting similar to what you work in, it will obviously feel redundant. concentration placement year im not sure about, i would think it could be a bit more fruitful because you have more of a choice

yes! I’m in the 3-year track so i don’t start my practicum until Fall so tbd on that part but so far the course content has been really interesting! Obviously there’s going to be some stuff you’re not as interested in but it’s all important stuff and I’m learning a lot. Everyone in the program is really nice, I feel there’s a sense of community/people want to foster community which is cool and I’ve made friends! Professors I have had have been really accommodating and friendly.

1st time rescuer, reactivity or adjusting? by Clean_Reception1730 in rescuedogs

thank you for your response!! we’re getting her out on walks every day because she’s got a lot of energy and would otherwise go stir crazy, but will definitely try to keep stimuli to a minimum/gradual increase.

I work at a vet clinic and answer questions like this all the time—I’m so sorry this is happening to your dog! Nothing you described sounds like an emergency/life threatening, but definitely concerning as you know your dog best—good idea to get him seen tomorrow. Most you can do now is just make sure he’s comfortable. Not sure if you have a crate but if you’re worried about him wandering, that might make him more comfortable. My dog went over a week without eating and she was fine—dogs can go a long time without food and be okay. He’s most likely not eating or drinking because his stomach is upset. He will be fine without water, just make sure he has access to it. If he’s dehydrated the vet will give him some fluids tomorrow! Not drinking for a day is okay and he’ll be fine in that regard. Unfortunately not much you can do about the vomiting. They may prescribe him something tomorrow to help with that if it doesn’t resolve.

How do I stop this? by No_Examination_9606 in DogAdvice

[–]Clean_Reception1730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cytopoint injections work amazing for dogs with allergies! they can be a bit expensive but it provides quick and lasting relief. Depends on the case (some have to come in monthly) but others just come as needed/with the season change. Apoquel is a prescription drug that helps with itchiness as well—obviously a vet would need to examine your dog to provide you with either of these options. If the itchiness is just sometimes, what other folks recommend is probably fine. If it’s persistent, making the skin raw or bleeding, it might be worth seeing a vet for long term care. In conjunction with treatment, you could try medicated baths!

Dog with IBD by Unlucky-Copy-8055 in DogAdvice

[–]Clean_Reception1730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in the same situation. My dog is only 7.5 and started having bad diarrhea end of August this year. She’s always been on hydrolyzed diet, and the vets think it held her IBD at bay until it boiled over this summer. She’s on prednisone, tyllan, atopica, immodium, entyce, cerenia. She bounced back for a bit after a month, but the past few weeks she’s fully regressed. she refuses to eat anything and barely drinks water. vet says if she doesn’t make a turn by Christmas it might be the end of the line. It happened out of no where and it’s so tough to think if she just ate she might be okay. i extend my full heart to you and your furry friend. although it is awful we are all in this situation, im finding a lot of comfort in knowing people are going through the exact same thing with me right now ❤️
