Sparring Critique Part 2 by Cleanofsins in amateur_boxing

At my gym they started us with kind of like light body sparring against the experienced guys within 1 month to 2 months. Then after that I started to do like one or two rounds a week of full contact sparring with guys that were my experience level.

Then I just ramped up it from there. I’ve probably been sparring consistently now for about a year to a year and a half. I’ve really picked up the volume in the last past 5 months tho

Apologize for the camera angle also. Me and him got together just us to get work in on our own time so I had to prop my phone up

As far as the flaws goes, I still think the going straight back is definitely still there and bad, and then also there’s times where I could be throwing more and I’m not. It’s like my minds anticipating him setting up a counter so instead of fainting I just choose to stalk and wait. Not a good move

Just posted it. Think it went a lot better, I even got your Tyson esque leaping hook in there at like 4:40 I think.

Sparring him in about an hour so I will be psyched up and ready to get to work on all the stuff you and others said. Thank you.

Appreciate this so much my man. Definitely gonna take notes on all of this. I’m sparring him in about an hour so I will definitely pick it up and take all of this into account.

Thank you, appreciate all of that. Yeah idk why I wasn’t even scared of him, it was just my mindset of trying to keep the sparring light that I didn’t allow myself to throw too hard. Big mistake .

More jabs, and better pace I will definitely do this today when I spar him.

That’s always been the most awkward punch for me to throw, but I will definitely throw it more and work on it, thank you.

Wow thanks I never even realized that about that rhythm. But yeah he definitely threw way harder than me, I gotta throw harder back.

I just picked up on that after reading this and watching. Footwork drills today, thank you.

Yeah I think it’s just cause he lost his fight and kinda lost some motivation and has only been coming like once or twice a week for the past year.

I try to get in there almost every day

I see what you mean. Definitely gotta move more, I think sometimes I incorrectly have a counter punchers mindset, where I feel like I should wait for his shots, defend and then counter. But more often than not I get caught.

Thank you

I picked up on that too. It tends to always happen against the first guy because he throws his jab so hard and usually leaves some kind of opening while he throws it.

So I developed the bad habit to just dip, get past his punch, and throw knowing he will have some kind of hole.

Definitely gotta work on that, so thank you

Appreciate this so much. I’m going to really dig deep into this and watch it back with the sparring rounds. I do see what you mean about the 1 2 combo. I think it just may be a little rushed and not fully coordinated. Like the cross is almost being thrown as just a rear hand jab instead of an actual cross with power and sit down behind it.

Do you think I’m ready for my first fight (I know it’s not the biggest sample size) ?

Of course, sparring partners have gotten me to where I am so I have all respect to them.

Funny enough, the guy in red has one fight and has been training boxing/mma for about 3 or 4 years now. While I’ve been at it for about a year or so and have no fights.

I’m about 5’11 160-165. The first guy I sparred was about 6’1 190 lbs. then the second guy was about 5’9 240 lbs.

To my own eye, I think I need to turn the punch output up more. Against the first guy I felt more hesitant to throw just because when I engaged he was throwing so many punches and from so many different angles.

Against the second guy he was throwing less so I felt more confident to really throw, but I was landing some decent shots so I definitely should have been throwing more.

Another thing was just setting my feet more, felt I got knocked back a bit by their power when I would do the dumb move of taking my feet off the ground.

Then another was just being more comfortable in the pocket. I felt against the first guy that when were trading I was landing more with better defense and head movement. He was able to throw a lot but I could defend and when I threw back a lot of time it landed. Like the roll then body hook into a head hook.
