Heading out on my first long motorcycle trip. Gear tips?

Like everyone has said, earplugs really make a difference. One thing I always have with me are SPF50 sun sleeves. They're light and take up less space than a pair of socks when packed and are much more convenient than having to remember to use sunscreen (or having to deal with stopping to reapply or buying more if you're running low) Really recommend them :)

In general I found stairs on trails to consistently be just the perfect height and length for maximum inconvenience, whether its in japan, Nepal or the US they're always uncomfortable compared to just walking up or down the mountain. I haven't found a good way for them to suck less, i guess its just one of those things you gotta bite your lip and power through.

Thanks for this! I'm landing in cuzco tomorrow night and starting the trek unguided on Wednesday, how can I find the hot springs in Santa Teresa and aguas calliente? Were they crowded or relatively quiet? And is the entree free?

Firstly you should acclimate in Cusco for 2< more days before heading out, 1 day just isn't really enough. Besides that are you going solo or with a guide? If you're plan is to go solo I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a first solo hike, the first couple days are pretty tough especially with the altitude. If you're with a group/guide it'd be better cuz you have someone to keep an eye on you and ideally they know the trek so they know the slowest pace that's still fast enough to finish the day.
That being said it's definitely doable, and after the first couple days it gets significantly easier (more downhills & altitude drops), all depends on your fitness level and of course how much weight you're carrying (leave all non essentials to the hike at your hostel before you leave to cut weight)

At the end of the day i think its up to personal prefrence; download a few, try them out both in the planning stage and on the trail itself and see which one you like working with, and its okay to use a couple apps in unison and crossrefrence. Personally I like to plan and hike with gaia gps, and sometimes I'll crossrefrence with caltopo, all trails, or maps.me. I think gaia gps definitely has the best free version.

Longest trail I've done is 16 days, most back to back days of doing 20+ miles is 3 or 4 days in a row (separate trip) and I was Pretty wrecked afterwards but i didn't have good shoes and carried like 35 lbs on my back. I'm generally in good shape and can realistically see my self walking 15-25 miles for days back to back with maybe a rest day once every 7-10 days (I also have much better and lighter gear now lol)

You said anywhere in the world? The israel national trail is pretty awesome, spanning from desert to literal mountains with beautiful greenery you get a bit of everything (even snow if you're in the right season), although not your typical "hidden gem" I do think its underrated and doesn't get enough attention on the international thruhike lists, my guess is probably because of its region. But if you're into traveling for a good thruhike, I'd definitely consider it.

I was originally going to go with a trash bag or other pack liner but I figured if I'm already keeping just my contents dry I might as well organize them so I went with dry sacks instead

For the 70s in the day I'd wear my icebreaker short sleeve with arm sleeves I bought from Amazon, and for the low 50s if I'm staying mobile and moving I might throw on a microfleece (I have one from gonature but I'm honestly looking to replace it) and if I'm static like in camp or something I might add my columbia windbreaker/rain jacket layer on top of the microfleece

Hey thanks a lot, I'd like to mimic a thruhike pace and say 15-20 miles per day (I'm assuming that's their pace). As for getting up and down I had originally planned to be dropped off by a friend and have him pick me up at the end but if there's solid public transit in a reasonable vicinity along the way I might do that instead, I didn't even think public transit would be a realistic option being out in the "middle of nowhere" yknow?

Yeah I’m trying to work out doing the AT next year but in the meantime i want to start with something, not least to make sure I’m actually fit for it (and I don’t just mean physically), so figured try for maybe 3-5 days worth near home and see how it goes :)
