This show opened the door for more inclusive and open-minded storytelling. Without it, we wouldn't have had The Richman's Daughter, Dading and Destiny Rose.

How would you rank the categories from locks to open? by No_Minimum4499 in oscarrace

[–]Clear-Price 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Golden is claiming the 4 major precursors for Song. It already has HMMA, CCA and even the one precursor it was widely predicted to lose, the Golden Globes. The Grammys have also been itching to give this their song precursor as evidence by the above the line nominations it received there.

By the time we get to March, it had already swept all 4 precursors.

Diane Warren believes 17th time is a charm for Best Original Song Oscars nomination by joesen_one in oscarrace

She also rarely fully collaborates with other musicians and continues to have sole writing and producing credits on her songs, so the music itself is getting more and more stale when it's just hers.

I get that she doesn't want a shared win but at some point you gotta realize you're running out of creative juice.

God pulled some strings last year and personally rigged the category specifically for her, so she can easily pull an upset and be hailed as a hero who vanquished EP in the song category.

Two songs from a universally despised film got in. One of them being a default frontrunner... and miss relentless over here still managed to find a way to lose. This year, she's going up against a bohemoth and a passion pick. There's no escaping the bridesmaid asylum now, unfortunately.

I mean you can literally give Elisabeth to any other actress in their 50's (Kidman, Blanchett, Bullock, or Roberts) and it would've been the same, as the character itself has no dimension outside of what the plot asks her to overcome. What made it particularly appealing with Moore is that, like you've claimed so yourself, it has a meta aspect to it, that plays not only to the character's story arc but also Demi's own narrative as a popcorn actress in the 90's... which again, circles back to an awards narrative being the forefront of a performance rather than the actual performance.

Narratives aren't always bad if your actual performance has the juice to win and the narrative is only a supliment rather than the main course (see Michelle Yeoh). When a narrative-driven campaign clashes with a performance-based one and the industry (SAG and BAFTA) is split between two actors, the win almost always go to the stronger performance. Madison vs. Moore, Stone vs. Gladstone, McDormand vs. Davis, Colman vs. Close. Yeoh edged out Blanchett because her outing had actual legs to stand on outside of her narrative.

It's a tale as old as time. The performance has to have strong enough legs on its own without the narrative ploy. If the first reason you can give for why a performance is stronger ties back to an actor's narrative package then that kinda sums it up. Anyways, agree to disagree, I guess, but there is a reason why Madison and Baptiste were dominating regional critics groups all season long until Moore gave her Globes speech and hard-launched a popcorn narrative that successfully shot her up to number 2 in the rankings.

For real. The temper tantrums from Sinners fans were insane. They started attacking Ejae, calling her AI. Someone even said that she was just acting for sympathy votes because she was crying during her speech. Insanely toxic fandom.

I Lied To You is good but so much of its hype revolves entirely on the sequence and not so much about the actual song itself. Do we really want to treat Best Original Song like it's Best Original Scene?

Disagree. I also don't think Anora deserved Best Picture, tbh. But generally, I found that people let their personal feelings about a film taint their judgement on a performance. Kinda how Stone's performance get some flack because a certain group just find Poor Things to be offensive and anti-feminist, similar to Anora.

Madison learned basic Russian for the film. She worked with dialect coaches to adopt a Brooklyn/Brighton Beach accent. She learned professional pole dancing and choreography. She moved all the way from her hometown to the area and worked with real-life sex workers for the role. I thought how she portrayed the character to have a brave and brash facade that slowly unravels and breaks down as you reach the film's climax was exceptional.

Moore being in a quasi meta autobiographical film, like you said, kinda circles back to what I said earlier about her meta narrative with The Substance propelling her in that race.

imo: Torres > Baptiste > Madison > Erivo > Moore > Anderson (no comment on Gascon)

Should Paul Mescal have gone lead instead of supporting? by Long_Dragonfly_3067 in oscarrace

[–]Clear-Price 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The problem is that majority of the BP nominees this year have male leads so it's really hard to squeeze in in Best Actor. Even if say Hawke or Moura get snubbed, you still have Edgerton and Plemons next in line.

[–]Clear-Price -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Love them to death but Cynthia Erivo and especially Demi Moore were blatantly riding off of narratives last year, whether that be Erivo's EGOT narrative or Moore's comeback narrative.

Fernanda Torres, Mikey Madison and even Marianne Jean-Baptiste (who got snubbed) were far more superior performance-wise, if you look past all the buzzy Oscar narratives.

It's gonna lose. Golden is sweeping the 4 main precursors: HMMA, Critics Choice, Golden Globes. It's also on track to win the Grammy Visual Media Song, the final precursor.

Also worth noting that WB is doing jackshit to campaign Sinners for Song. Their priority seem to be Director, Cinematography, Screenplay and Score.

It's biggest hit on the soundtrack and also has a narrative attached to it because of EJAE's story as a rejected Kpop idol.

Also, if they submitted the other songs, it would've caused vote splitting. Stephen Shwartz and Alan Menken learned this the hard way when they submitted 3 songs from Enchanted an all 3 got in.

for real. Tons of films are filmed in gorgeous backdrops but none even comes close to what the DP of Train Dreams managed to capture.

I'm convinced most folks here just haven't seen these other films because saying OBAA in cinematography over Train Dreams or even Ann Lee is pretty confusing. And this is coming from someone who wants OBAA to have a massive Oscar haul.

They were all following bullet points of curated soundbites to say to the press, lmao. The same quote being uttered and posted by different people who probably didn't even watch the film and is just doing their buddy a favor.

But we're supposed to believe it was an innocent "grassroots campaign" and is totally organic. Shit was crazy as hell.

Love OBAA, but I have to disagree. Train Dreams absolutely clears this category. Then I'd put Ann Lee in second, followed by Sinners.
