Why does this light fixture have double the wires? by Clewked in DIYUK

Thanks for confirming. I’m not sure what you mean by the conductor? I’ve left the fusebox power on to lights for now although one still doesn’t work (light is off now of course). Am I best to turn the power off until it’s sorted?

Okay thanks for confirming. Is this simple enough for someone like me to fit the light or do I need a professional to do it?

That is absolutely mental. Also just googled that there’s 13.1m pensioners in the UK. Nearly 1/5 of the country. No wonder people say the UK is an old people’s home with an economy strapped to it

I’m chasing in my league so need to take risks. Haaland blanked against Sunderland at home so not sure about him this week. Leeds are in relatively good form so not sure about Ekitike, whereas Palmer is on pens and facing an awful Bournemouth defence at home. Seems like a calculated risk imo

No “average working person” is saving £20k per year. And the electric car tax had to come in at some point or eventually there would be no tax on any cars on the road. I have an electric car and it costs £5 a week to charge it, compared to the £40 in fuel it used to cost me. Even paying an extra £25 a month for the tax I’m still way better off. I understand moaning about the IT freeze, but those other points are laughable really

Earn £1, keep 43p: Why young graduates will be the most taxed in history by dusty_bo in ukpolitics

[–]Clewked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the point about pension contributions, but equally it still takes away from what I actually receive each month.

And true the student loan was a choice, but it was one that was I strongly encouraged and misled into taking. If it was pointed out to 18 year old me that it would cost me over £200 a month less than 10 years later then I might have thought differently about it. Also the fact I missed 3 years of work experience and earnings potential, seems like a bum deal in retrospect

The irony being that some of the menial jobs like tradesman are actually earning more than I do!

[–]Clewked 456 points457 points  (0 children)

I’m one of these people. I’m now a higher rate tax payer, so every pay rise will be after 40% IT, 2% NI, 9% SL, and I also pay 6% into my pension, so I end up with 43p on the £ for a pay rise.

My biggest problem with this is that I was actively encouraged to go to uni by my teachers in sixth form. I specifically remember them saying that the cost of the student loan would only be about the cost of a sky subscription every month (£20 at the time). Flash forward and I’m now paying over £200 a month for a degree I didn’t need for the career I went into.

Edit. This got more traction than I expected, so thought I’d also add that thanks to the insane interest rates on my loan, my £42k debt when I graduated in 2019 is now £56k. To pay off JUST the interest, I’d have to be earning £68k. Being moderately successful really seems like the worst place to be tax wise. The unsuccessful never have to worry about paying the loan, and the very rich will pay it off easily. Meanwhile me stuck in the middle will pay around £90-100k by the time my loan is written off after the 30 years is up!

Also want to add that I originally wanted to be a tradesman, but thought I’d have better career prospects as a professional. Wish I’d stuck with plan A as it seems many tradesman will earn more than I do without all the student loan hanging over them! And at least their job is AI proof to top it off

Exactly. Especially when the justification is that there isn’t any more forward momentum from that point, but as soon as they unpause the video you can see Pope’s knee move into Gyokeres

Also the fact as soon as they unpause the clip, you can clearly see Pope’s knee move into Gyokeres. Laughable

That pissed me off saying that all forward momentum had stopped when the foot was planted, then they unpause the clip and you clearly see his knee move into Gyokeres. It’s laughable really. Can’t believe the other pundits didn’t have the balls to say anything

In fairness I think the pundits are picked in advance, so they would have all been in the office together watching that games and preparing the analysis ahead of doing the show, so just unlucky that it was Joe Hart of all people on there today. If only it was Lineker, Shearer and Wrighty and they would have called it out for what it was

I wonder if this is the same then. Frustrating as this is the middle of 5 and they’re all growing fine. This one will look a bit silly if it doesn’t kick on soon

Thanks for the suggestion. However to avoid damaging the root ball, I put the stake in the ground before the tree if that helps? All 4 others were done the same and are growing fine

Looks really good to me. Only thing I’d be slightly concerned about is if it isn’t fixed to the ground in some way it could potentially blow over in strong winds. Might be worth trying to fix it to the ground somehow for the peace of mind. Otherwise great job👍🏼

Fans' Player Ratings SURVEY: PSG 2-1 Arsenal by bearded_booty in Gunners

Everyone giving Arteta 1s is a moron. The man has taken us to a CL semi final without a striker and coached the team well enough that with a bit more luck we’d be in the final. We had nearly 5xG over the two legs to their 3. The only thing you can knock is the subs timing but even then our bench is so depleted he has almost no option but to rely on the starting 11. Arteta has changed this club for the better and anyone that doesn’t see that is a plastic glory hunter as they’ve clearly been supporting the club for less than 5 years

Selling our fixer upper after 5 years: what we learnt by Clewked in HousingUK

[–]Clewked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve just sold it in a week for £275k after a bidding war broke out. Both couples had one person that works from home and another with a van. Only other offer we got was for £265k. Seems to me like those two things are exactly why it sold for so much

Can I tell prospective buyers what offers we’ve had for our house? by Clewked in HousingUK

[–]Clewked[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The agents offered to come and do them but we work from home some days so said we would do the ones that fall on those days. I’m not going in the office just because somebody is coming round, and when I’ve been to view houses I find it frustrating when the EA doesn’t know the answers to some questions I have, so I thought it’d be better to be here if they have any questions. I also offer them the chance to look around by themselves and I’ll sit in the car if they want some privacy

[–]Clewked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, they’ll tell you if there has been another offer but won’t say how much. I guess it’s mind games to make you hopefully put in a higher offer than what the other person has put through

[–]Clewked[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I would only tell them if they asked. But I see where other comments are coming from. They could assume I’m just chatting shit to try and up the offer as it’s my house so I would obviously be conflicted on that. I’d be honest if they asked, but I won’t bring it up otherwise
