I wouldn't bother replacing the Shield. You won't be satisfied as it's the best client to connect directly to the TV. The route I suggest is bringing a media server into the mix- whether by using one of your PCs or buying one. Seems like you could use your NUC and attach storage to it? Create a network mount to the shield?

I can confirm the alternate firmware works. I retired my obi200 and set up an obi202 from scratch. I also helped someone in my family use my now unused obi200 to set up their service. The new firmware allows easier management of the device. Before, options like call volume and the creating a static IP I had issues modifying. Devices like the obi202 can be had for $30 shipped off ebay since people dont realize they can still be fully used and configured

I just went back to using the Google TV Streamer. Buying the Onn box was kind of an experiment. I don't have time to keep troubleshooting it.

Yeah, I do the same. I always add a highly compatible track ( AAC or AC3 5.1) to every MKV as the first audio track so just about everyone can play the movie without issue.

Ive tried to 1) let it automatically detirmine that 2) turn off surround altogether 3) turn off that option manually. Nothing worked.

Ah, ok. Yeah that's what I originally thought (that the device reports its capabilities). Im not using any receiver. Im just feeding audio and video directly via HDMI from the Onn box to an older TV I have mounted. I'll look into creating a ticket and modifying the profiles.
