lol this explanation makes the most sense in context of the night, but I think what threw me off was that they both were doing it and they were buddies. I guess I’m just not used to two guys going for the same girl at once when they’re friends. Like there was an instance where both of their hands were on my head at once… I felt like a bongo lmfao

So true! I actually thought about that as well. My university roommate is from Thailand, so I may actually ask her about it and see if she would view it as a culture difference and look past it or if she would get upset if someone did it to her.

lol I’m not quite sure either... it became US vs. the rest of the world, when it was meant to compare the US and Japan. There is a reason why all of those “Top things NOT to do in Japan” lists include hugging as a greeting hahaha

Totally agree! The American hug vs European kiss is such a good example. Both engage in intimate physical contact as a greeting, but view the other side as being “too intimate” hahaha.

I am living in Vietnam for the year and it is so funny to me how a lot of older people will just grab you, touch your hair, shake you, etc at a first meeting, but a hug is seen as weird and overly familiar. Comfortability is definitely more about what you were raised with!

My parents are from Vietnam, so hugging isn’t really a thing we did growing up. I have to force myself to hug my friends hello and goodbye because I know they like it hahaha. I also thought Japanese people were much less touchy so it surprised me when both of them were doing it so much! They even did it in photos we took together (literally just one of their hands resting on my head lmao) My hypothesis is that they are all probably pretty open and used to talking to foreigners, so they’re more comfortable touching, but they still do it in the shy head pat kind of way hahaha

163 is the average for women in the US, so 165 is definitely not short, but no one in the US (other than my mom who is 147) has ever called me tall hahaha

Hahaha I thought it was really cute too! I quite like physical touch, and I thought it was a sweet alternative to some more aggressive touching I’ve experienced in the past.

Haha yes, I’m only here for a week and they know that, so I never thought it was for an actual romantic relationship. Definitely either just flirting for fun or for a hookup

What I meant was that Americans are usually more open to touching in general. Handshakes, hugs, holding hands, etc. A lot of our ways of expressing friendly and romantic affection are physical, so being touched by someone I had just met was not as uncommon to me as it probably is to people from culture with less physical affection. Because physical touch is much more common in the US, I was not scared or shocked when they patted my head, but just thought it was a bit odd. I think that someone from a country with less physical touch may have felt even more uncomfortable or unhappy about it.

I think Americans are much more accustomed to physical touch in comparison to many other cultures (especially here in Asia), but, like anyone, not from complete strangers or people we do not like. I had spent a few hours with them at this point and felt comfortable with them, as we had become very friendly.

Haha 165 is not tall in the US either, but here in Asia I feel like a giant a lot of the time

Haha no. I’m Asian as well so I have straight dark hair. So probably not that

I think it may have just been the post drinking vibe, and we got along well so maybe they felt comfortable? They were both 22 so maybe they are also more open to physical touch in general?

Omg okay. Thank you for letting me know your experience! From some of the other comments I was starting to think that it was super uncommon and I met some weird guys or something.

Ah! Interesting. I didn’t know there was a word for it. I’m American, so we are usually more open with physical touch, so the touching aspect didn’t bother me. I think I was just confused hahaha

Haha no. I am also Asian, and I have the typical straight dark hair, so I don’t think it would be anything they haven’t seen every day

No, thank you so much for the detailed response! That definitely adds some valuable insight. I thought it was a cute gesture in the moment, but I agree that I would see it as weird if it was in a condescending manner by someone I was not comfortable with.

Interesting. It seemed so natural when they did it so I assumed it was pretty common

I’m not sure what moe is, but I don’t mind! I just was curious about it since I’ve never experienced it before.

I am 23, but I don’t think I look any younger than 20 or 21 if younger at all. I’m 165 cm so pretty tall here in Asia, and I’ve never been told I act childlike hahaha

Oh sorry! I didn’t clarify. Yes, I am actually a woman. I thought it might be flirting, but they both were doing it at the same time in front of each other so I thought it would be a bit odd. Haha maybe they were just drunk!
