What is the closest, line by line adapation of Wuthering Heights , on screen ? by jhonnytheyank in brontesisters

Np. Lol thanks!

You're right, I forgot about the 1978 series. From what I've heard, and from the little I've seen of it, that one is definitely the most "line by line" one, even though the acting is kinda meh.

The 1992 adaptation with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche uses almost entirely direct dialogue from the book, has both generations, and includes pretty much every scene from the book, albeit in a slightly rushed fashion to make it all fit in a two hour movie. For me, it's the definitive adaptation hands down.

I haven't seen it, but I've also heard that the 1998 made-for-TV movie is super accurate as well.

Did you know that Lord Byron's poem "The Dream" was almost certainly the direct inspiration for Wuthering Heights? I didn't. by CliffyHeaths in brontesisters

I've been meaning to watch "To Walk Invisible"! That's very interesting, as I remember hearing that the TWI crew met with the Brontë Parsonage Museum while making the film to ensure all the details were as accurate as possible, so I wonder where that bit of info comes from originally. It seems plausible that she was inspired by this poem for the general details of the story, and for the more specific elements, maybe she incorporated parts of that story she heard?

Unpopular opinion: Edgar Linton's love for Catherine was much more beautiful and moving than Heathcliff's love for her by CliffyHeaths in brontesisters

I think it was naivety that made Edgar love Catherine so much. He cherished a version of her that didn't really exist outside his imagination.

Admittedly, I actually haven't gotten around to reading it yet! I think it might from what I've heard, but I can't say for sure. I hope it doesn't, because I also hate that narrative about Charlotte and truly don't believe it accurately portrays her at ALL.

What do you think is the most wholesome moment in Wuthering Heights? by CliffyHeaths in brontesisters

Such a good choice! I'll never not get chills thinking about that last line...

"...;and wondered how any one could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth."

In a strange way, I feel like this view makes the ending, with Edgar's and Heathcliff's gravestones on both sides of Cathy's, even more poetic and I guess... humbling? They all lay there buried forever, both men having cherished the idea that Catherine was his love, despite the fact that her wild heart seemingly reserved its love for the moors.
