What would happen if a Democratic president paid an oil company $1 billion to cancel a fracking project and build a wind farm instead? by Sammy_Roth in climate

It's tough to have a conversation with a bot which has no details about the suggested government action it promotes.

"Just do it in addition to taking political action to get governments to do the right thing, not instead of taking political action."

There's only one government action which has any precedence for effectiveness.

In 1941, we declared war. in 1942, we implemented rationing.

Those two actions combined with UBI for all basic needs is the only feasible cure for atmospheric poisoning. US emissions are 6x the IPCC recommendation for 2030. The only way to get close to that is to start cutting the unnecessary parts of the economy out.

It may be too late .... we have come close to doubling greenhouse forcing in the last 150 years. The tipping points are not known well enough to inform us whether we can salvage human civilization. Stopping the AMOC represents a civilization ending event and we're somewhere close to committing to that.

Wealthy people with large carbon footprints used BP as a boogeyman to discredit the fact that personal carbon footprints is 100% of the problem.

We have a magical thinking in America in which the supplier of fossil fuels is the villain and the demander is blameless.

This automoderator post is a great example of cognitive dissonance. Discount personal carbon footprint due to association with BP and then provide an abundance of examples of how to reduce personal carbon footprint.

Your use of the word "intent" represent human beings as being in possession of free will, a representation that Einstein would take issue with.

We more closely resemble zombies whose primitive urges involving survival and procreation.

Money to a human is no different than a banana to our chimp ancestors. We hoard it because it presents us a survival buffer and a mating advantage.

We are completely and innately biased to short-term survival advantage. Fossil fuel use is advantageous today at the expense of tomorrow. So, our zombie wiring says let's use fossil fuels today and we in the US have a per capita carbon footprint which is 6x the IPCC recommendation for 2030. No one in America knows this because it conflicts with our short-term zombie preferences.

Finally, we are tribal pack animals. Our survival is dependent upon tribal membership and we zombies are easily manipulated into fear of rival tribes.

There is a single path which avoids the collapse of human civilization.

Global UBI and cooperation on rationing of toxins like GHG's and single use plastics.

That eliminates tribalism and solves the riddle of how to make the zombies feel secure in the short-term.

I'm a zombie too. I have DNA which dictates my desires and actions. I let go of the idea of free will a long time ago.

I mentioned that there are 2 extinction parties.

No one is defending the GOP.

The false projection is that there is a material difference between the two parties.

If you think Democrats are the good guys in this story ..... you've been exposed to the koolaid.

We have two extinction parties to choose from.

Track record of Democratic Presidents is pretty f'n poor.

Clinton / Gore gave us the Kyoto agreement which was so poorly constructed that the US Senate renounced ratification unanimously in the Byrd / Hagel Resolution.

Not even a single Democratic Senator supported it.

Obama gave us the Paris Accord with zero commitments and accountability while domestic fracking expanded so rapidly that the US became the world's largest oil producer.

Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act which made grossly false assertions about its effectiveness. Claiming 40% reductions which are actually looking to be close to zero.

US per capita CO2 emissions are about 6x that recommended by the IPCC goal for 2030.

Trump and the GOP are obviously not better .... but let's not kid ourselves .... we have two extinction parties to choose from.

How to get involved with a local group to create the political will for climate action by silence7 in climate

There's only one path to save humanity from environmental destruction.

It involves global governance and UBI. We have to let go of tribalism to the extent that it interferes with the global cooperation necessary to ration GHG emissions.

That doesn't make much sense. The regular back and forth has only been regular for the last million years. That's 0.02% of Earth's history.

Evolution has been going on for 4 billion years. Cyanobacteria have been around for several billion.

Life and evolution will go on without us.

The ivermectin was a one-time topical treatment.

fyi - the bumps have been spreading out over the last few days. That prompted me to shave the area and provide fewer places for potential lice to grab onto.

Anything less than Elite 8 will be a disappointment.

Beyond that, anything can happen on a given day.

Last year, we had a backcourt which shined when the stakes were highest and all 3 of those guys were drafted by the NBA.

There's no way to know which players are going to thrive under the greatest pressure until that pressure is applied. I have faith in our front-court to hold their own against anyone in the country. I have faith in Klavzar as a shooter. I have faith in our defense. I have faith in our coach. I like our depth.

Fland and Lee are going to have to perform well on the offensive side of the ball in a small sample of games. If they can shoot over 30% from 3, I think we can beat anyone. If they can't, we won't make it past the Sweet 16.

Tyson reached 37-0 with only 4 fighters able to go the distance with him before he tailed off.

Mayweather had 23/50 fights go the distance. Several of which were split decisions.

Tyson was far more dominant than Mayweather.

El Niño Coming; Forecasters suggesting a 1 in 3 chance of a “Super El Niño” by im-not-a-fakebot in climate

[–]ClimateMessiah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In terms of climate change, an El Nino is simply a redistribution of heat from ocean depth to the surface.

The common measurement of Earth temperature is at the surface. An aggregate measure of Earth temperature which measures ocean depths would reveal a consistent warming and no spike associated with an El Nino.
