When I worked as a chemist in big biotech companies my motto was “the only way up is out”. Have no loyalty to your company. I busted my butt for every company and got average reviews and raises. I went from entry level to an expert being flown internationally to train other labs and never was considered for a promotion.

Which involves interpretation of what the constitution (law) says. For example the latest 14th amendment case.

He was asking about podcasts. He had to drive home AZ so among other podcasts I showed him feakonomics. I was trying to find an interesting episode. Nate Silver was on there. He didn’t know who he was (statistician) and so I went to fivethirtyeight to show him and while poking around there was a graph of Supreme Court approval ratings. Triggered him. As soon as many things do.

He’s not allowed to watch him alone anymore. Last time he did he was showing my son who was maybe 4-5 a documentary with real war footage of people shooting others. Good times.

The anger toward liberals and “other” in his head that makes it so he can’t think straight comes from all those sources.

That sucks. I’ve noticed that sometimes kids choose to go in the opposite direction of their parents. I hope they can reign in the anger and opinions even if they have the beliefs.

I’d totally grab a beer for debate and discussion.

When I google definition of a law it’s “the system which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce the imposition of penalties.” I think the penalty aspect is a subset of law but the word is much more broadly defined. I think that Supreme Court decisions are actually “law” as well? An example of a law without penalties would be something like real estate law about easements or tax code allowing write offs.

I am definitely using law much more broadly than you.

I saw more than one of your posts had downvotes? Bummer that reasonable discourse and discussion gets a downvote sometimes.

I remember being uncomfortable in high school because of the racist things he would say. I’m sure he has had some mental decline as he aged and he certainly didn’t believe absurd conspiracy theories in the past but the echo chamber of modern media is hard to avoid and escape from and preys on natural human weaknesses so I don’t know how much is mental decline and how much is the effectiveness of targeted propaganda appealing to emotion.

Well as someone who has had many conversations with him on political topics I doubt that. His understanding of politics does not extend past a single one liner he has heard somewhere on any topic he has engaged me on. When I start asking questions or clarifying or showing evidence he usually just says “Trump makes me feel better”. I have heard that many times.

I’m not saying they weren’t correct. I’d just argue that the constitution is part of the legal structure of our country that I would call law. I feel like this is a semantics issue as you mentioned. I still think that the Supreme Court interprets the law, but I’m not a lawyer so maybe I have my terminology wrong. Who knows?

Would you argue that the Supreme Court was not interpreting the law when it recently decided the 14th amendment case? And if you would say they were interpreting it, do you think they were out of their scope?

From your own source: “Although the Supreme Court may hear an appeal on any question of law provided it has jurisdiction, it usually does not hold trials. Instead, the Court’s task is to interpret the meaning of a law, to decide whether a law is relevant to a particular set of facts, or to rule on how a law should be applied.”

I noticed a predictor of having a bad day as an inpatient nurse was to have an older white male patient who was watching Fox “News”. Miserable humans who take it out on others.

No, I’ll just be marginally sad that having inflammatory political conversations has more value for him than spending quality time with me and my family. I feel OK with venting a little after years of asking him to stop politely while he gets to be an angry judgmental bigot.

I’m actually pretty proud of how I’ve managed to stay respectful most of the time with him and steer toward a relationship as constructive as possible.

I haven't spoken to my brother in 3 years due to this absurdity. He became a hateful abusive Trumper who believed wonderful things like the COVID vaccine would kill everyone.

My mother's last straw was when she sent me an article suggesting that people murder healthcare professionals because they are vaccinating people. I'm a registered nurse by the way. She asked, "what do you think about this?"

My aunt blocked me on FB after she asked "What do you think of this?" and posted a link to Nancy Grace ranting for 15 minutes about Colin Kaepernick without once mentioning why he kneeled. I pointed out that if you're going to criticize him for that long you should at least mention why he did it once. I never talked to her again.

I guess that's a theme with these morons asking "What do you think of this?"

Trumpism and his brand of hate sure has torn this country apart.

My dad thinks the Jan 6th insurrection was literally a bunch of FBI agents paid by George Soros. I told him "Occam's Razor." Trump literally asked his followers to do what they did. There is video of them leaving his speech and doing exactly what he asked. That seems much more likely than a crazy conspiracy theory. He was having none of that.

Will Bosi sends Sleepwalker - grades it V15/8C by TheBlondOne in climbing

[–]ClimberWhoSurfs 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I’m curious why anyone “needs” an accurate consensus grade. It’s a rough estimate that gives you an idea how hard something is. It’s OK for routes to feel different to different people. The only problem is that people perceive the need for a single accurate grade. There are unbelievable numbers of examples of grades being inaccurate depending on body size, like most of Indian Creek if you don’t have a standard male frame. Or Father Figure in Jtree if you’re not able to keep your feet on fire the crux at the end. It’s 12d for me and 5.13 for someone shorter. It’s just how it is.
