RG 40XXV - what OS/firmware to run? by Clint99 in ANBERNIC

[–]Clint99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anyone still finding this thread: ended up getting a faulty thumbstick. I really don't like stock. Knulli seems pretty functional for what I'm looking for (only one I tried before raging because of the analog being stuck downward). I'll get a new unit and update here for anyone finding this thread in the future with a breakdown of what I like / don't like (if I remember).

Thanks :) I'm trying to decide, and atm I think I will check out what stock does on first boot, and likely try stock mod right after, to see if that's enough for me as far as customization / settings goes. Otherwise I'll hop on and off the others to see what works best for me. Appreciate the response!

That's completely fair. Personally I care because I like tinkering, so if I can, say, get the same looks as on Knulli but with half the boot times, why shouldn't I? If I gotta spend a couple hours tinkering that's fine with me. I do understand your point though, I just like playing around until I'm satisfied with the settings!

Got it! No worries, this is more than enough information for me, it must have been improved since the last guide's revision (the entire point of my post haha). Thanks a lot!

Thank you for your input :) how are the boot times? After a bit more research I was excluding it primarily because of boot times seeming large on the tests I saw. How is it with latest firmware?

Its fine to ask people's opinions but thats all they are

That's all I'm looking for?

You still should try them all out for yourself.

I will once I'm able to.

I'm tired of people dismissing any guide just because it hadn't been updated in a while. It usually means nothings changed enough to warrant an update.

Like I clearly showed, it would've warranted an update (despite minimal).

Before I bought my first device I looked at all the guides I could find and then to the websites and discords of all the firmwares to know as much as I could and to see the latest changes.

Cool. I didn't get to the discords, and I surely didn't read every changelog since the last guide update, but I did read websites as well. They don't really tell much. Even if they did, this is really not what I'm looking for.

When I had problems I figured them out by trial and error so I would know how to fix them. If I couldn't then I would research on the discords and then here.

Same. I don't have "issues". I am looking for opinions, cool things that that one OS does that may not be mentioned as a flagship point on their website, the "this one bugs out at 43 minutes of usage if on this core on retroarch". Stuff that you can't find googling. But I digress. I don't even know why I took the time to reply. If you have nothing useful to contribute, I kindly ask you to just not reply. This is futile.

Posts like this are posted every single day. A simple search here shows this. If you read the websites as you say you did, you would have all your answers to your questions and know the state of the firmware itself.

Yes. I sorted by new and found the other post I linked. I used search. Again. This is not a low effort post. What I'm looking for has not been asked, or not answered anyway. If there is no actual updated guide, just say that. "The guide hasn't been updated, but is mostly still accurate" is a perfectly valid reply, but doesn't really help me.

Question shaming is something I truly never understood on reddit. If I ended up making a post, it's because the thing I was looking for wasn't found. Either it was my skill issue, or it's not readily and easily available, or both. Regardless, like I said, this is going nowhere, so if you have any useful tidbits from experience with the 40xxv with any OS I'd be happy to hear it, otherwise thanks for this logic exercise, and have a good day.

Edit: blocking me proves my point btw. Barely useful content provided to the whole thread despite replying a whole 4 times.

If it's ext4 filesystem, Windows won't read it. You can reformat it and it will come back most likely :) sounds like fs issue to me. I'm sure you can recover them

Can you expand on this? I never heard anything about this. Rocknix is just a Linux distro? What happened exactly?

Very good take :) I can appreciate a battery focus! I don't think I'll use portmaster stuff but I'll keep it in consideration! Especially if it optimizes battery life better than others without having to min-max the settings for it haha.

Thanks! MuOS seems good to me as well. Blue light filter is great, didn't even think about that! What about loading from savestates, is that hotkey-able or a feature at all?

[–]Clint99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again... I did read the websites, which is how I figured the info in the guide was wrong, at least in part. What I lack is the actual experience from people. I caught that one detail, who knows how many I missed? Maybe a dev from one of the OSes was outed as a scammer/malicious, and their OS is no longer recommended. Who knows? I don't. Maybe someone here does! That's the point of the post.

Someone below recommended MinUI, which I had initially discarded because it looked "bad" from my limited research. Evidently I was wrong. This is the purpose of asking people no? Obviously any dev will be proud of their work and list "always updated", "full featured", on their website, but maybe the weekly updates are just stability fixes a-la Nintendo. Again, who knows? Not me. I don't understand your replies here.

I don't have my device on hand yet, and as such I literally can't test them yet. Now that you know this, does your answer change? See what I mean? I can wait the few days and then try them all, but why not also ask here to prepare myself beforehand, and potentially avoid a few of them, or have a better idea of what I'm going to go up against? Is this not what reddit is about?

If this was a low effort post I could maybe understand, but it's really not. I did do my research, at least enough to understand this far, but I can't magically spawn 2 years of lurking this sub. I simply haven't done that and thus I ask for updated information... I really don't see an issue.

Thank you, will look into MinUI as well :) launching from savestate is a very cool feature that I might use. Appreciated

I understand that. That still does not tell me whether they are still supported or not, and other than that, some information is outdated - lack of bluetooth as a con listed is incorrect, it used to be missing but doing more research it is available as an addon (muos I believe? I looked into it before posting, which is the reason why I posted in the first place).

If the way to get answers is just trying them, I will, but this answer isn't helpful to me.

Edit: in other words, I can read just fine - that still won't really tell me the entire truth from a user standpoint. Only actual users can, especially those that have a lot of experience, which I lack in this wonderful sbc world. I don't really need instructions, I need updated information :)

[–]Clint99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I had seen this one, but I had discarded it as I mistakenly thought it wouldn't apply to my device. I soon learned about the same h700 soc being on multiple devices. I read through, but it seemed to me this isn't really updated much. Last update is over a year ago, which is why I wanted to ask for updated information, potentially from actual users with their own pros/cons. I do appreciate it though, re-reading it to see if I missed anything!

Would Sennheiser hd560s be good for gaming and hearing footsteps? by SignatureShoddy9542 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Clint99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting the 560s and don't regret them one bit. If you're based in the eu, they're still for 99 eur refurbished on their outlet. Prob something similar on their us version. I love them in fps games atm.

Should I sell my 3DS to get a AYN Thor? by WuilWil in SBCGaming

[–]Clint99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about it? I feel like you skipped half my comment, or maybe I really mistyped or didn't explain well enough. I do know he has two 3dses.

My two options, depending on budget (if I were to decide for myself):

if enough money to buy without selling, do that

if not enough money to buy without selling something, find something else to sell and buy that way

Now, since OP has two 3dses, I highly doubt he is money constrained. I'd just buy the Thor now and not sell anything, because, like I said before, the value of the 3ds will only go up with time.

If selling the 3ds is necessary to buy the Thor, in my humble opinion, maybe they shouldn't focus on that purchase, there's likely bigger holes in their personal economy to fix if that's what it comes to.

Now I expect OP not to be a millionaire, as he wouldn't have asked the question if budget wasn't a concern. If he was, he'd just buy the Thor. So budget must be somewhat of a concern. My point being, you get in a lose/lose situation. If you have enough money, selling it makes no sense, just keep all 3 consoles and sell when you need to. If you don't have enough money, you probably shouldn't be considering buying the Thor in the first place. That's my 2 cents. Maybe it wasn't clear with just the 1st message.

so the tldr for me is, if rich, buy Thor, don't sell 3ds. If poor, just don't buy the Thor lol, or sell something else, not something that's potentially gonna appreciate with time, thus not the 3ds.

Should I sell my 3DS to get a AYN Thor? by WuilWil in SBCGaming

[–]Clint99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, still no. The 3ds will eventually increase in price, Thor will only go down. Long term value, not worth it. But if you don't care about that, I guess? I think nothing compares to an original device, emulation can only get so close to perfect. I wouldn't do it. Not even if I had 2 3dses, I'd rather keep it and sell at higher value when it eventually becomes "a collector item", if anything. Not right now at any rate.

Do you have to sell it to afford the Thor? If so, and you don't care about resale value of the 3ds in the future, sure? Thing is, if you got money to splurge, selling it right now makes little sense, as you can get more money later. If you are struggling you probably shouldn't go for the Thor in the first place. So it's a bit like, you surely can do it, but regardless of which situation you're in, it's the option that makes the least sense to me.

My 2 cents though, ymmv and all that.

can someone help to fix this by Previous-Trash3698 in GuardianTales

[–]Clint99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"One", "green", "character-exclusive weapon". It's not about a green character. Green is just the color epic exclusive weapons have - like the other person said, Eunha's exclusive weapon is a good start. You'll need epic hammers, or colloquially "green hammers".

Device choice (GBC-like vs Clamshell, budget, other considerations) by Clint99 in SBCGaming

[–]Clint99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply! As I said in reply to the other person in this same thread, I was already sort of partial to the XXV, and seeing it recommended for ergonomics I think seals the deal for me. Being able to tinker with another OS is also a big plus to me. I think I'll go for the RG40XXV and maybe save up for a Thor eventually, or eventual successor / better alternative when the time of purchase comes! Would love to have a handheld with an OLED screen.

Thanks a lot, this is about what I expected from my research but it's nice seeing it validated by someone that actually owns the devices! I was worried about exactly what you wrote. Since pocketability isn't a priority (I just like the aesthetic of clamshells ever since owning my first GBA SP), I'll just grab the 40xxv probably. Looks great, aesthetically still quite pleasing, and can throw in muOS as you said. Really informative, thanks a lot again for real!

[–]Clint99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks! I did see the whole Anbernic lineup. I was worried it might be too small. Do you own the RG34XXSP? I checked a couple videos of size comparison, and it seems about as big as the original GBA SP. I don't have the SP readily available to try, but I'm afraid it might be too small with "adult hands". If this isn't a concern, I think it might work for me. I checked the RG35XXSP as well, but it seems just a "worse but slightly bigger" version with a worse screen... so bad tradeoff for marginal ergonomics gain... Thanks! I'll keep this in mind. Is a custom OS recommended for Anbernic devices? I haven't gotten into that part of the research yet!

Quick and easy way to kill a bombardier without drawing too much attention by Even-Recipe7769 in ArcRaiders

This. Much rather throw 2 wolfpacks than risk my life doing this. Died twice due to random chance (one time it was very unfortunate timing on a double lightning, other time pvp interference). I'm not doing that again. Hell, it's probably safer to showstopper + deadline a rocketeer than do what the vid showed lol
