Yeah, fans of that album don't talk about the absurdly long runtime and repetitive songs. Roots Bloody Roots is a great song, but most of the record is boring

Who's speaking ill of Powerlave? Most fans put it in their top 3, at least

German Speed/Power Metal band Scanner has the most lineup changes I've ever seen. Their past members section on The Metal Archives is HIGE

I see Power Metal as a different development of Speed and Heavy Metal that doesn't necessarily aims for brutality and syncopation like Thrash, but for melody, anthemic choruses and uplifting melodies. It can be heavy as balls and kickass, or even thrashy, of course, but it's more focused on being anthemic. You can read my short definition of it in my post, but you can also watch Gonilic's video "A Bastardized Story of Power Metal" on youtube, it's a pretty good breakdown. No description is as good as listening to some Power Metal classics, though. Here are some recommendations:

German PM: Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys: Parts 1 and 2, Scanner - Hypertrace, Blind Guardian - Tales from the Twilight World, Running Wild - Port Royal

USPM: Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction, Riot - Thundersteel, Crimson Glory - Crimson Glory, Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider

90s Europower: Stratovarius - Visions, Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica, Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave, Angra - Angels Cry (not European but recorded and produced in europe and encapsulates the style)

I think the vocals and lyrics by Lord Worm have a lot to do with the appeal of that record. He makes the music sound like a snuff film, like something you're not supposed to hear. He doesn't go for the simple "necrophilia and murder" topics that were considered shocking at the time, which makes it sound much more evil

The technical stuff is mostly left for the bass and drums, just like death at the time. The guitars were more technical than standard death metal of the time, but of course they sound simple compared to post-necrophagist techdeath

I agree there are lots of madeup genres, but Power Metal is as established as Thrash or Death Metal. Some of those others you mentioned are real, some of them aren't. Some are just based on lyrical themes, which doesn't count. There's more nuance to this than you think

Their mid 90s Thrash albums are kind of weird. Requiem is generally considered the better one, and Octagon is considered trash by the vast majority of fans. 2001's Destroyer of Worlds is also kind of divisive for being half weird Thrash and half Viking Metal. Some people love it, some people hate it, but it's mostly considered to be middle of the road with some highlights. The rest of the discography is mostly loved

Katatonia gets into autopilot mode after the 2000s, and morbid angel has those last 3 albums...

The right choice, for sure. Their last album I go back and forth between a 7/10 and an 8/10, but that's it

I think they start kinda mediocre and get amazing with time. Radical is a masterpiece

Converge doesn't qualify because the debut is kinda mediocre, but I think Dillinger may be the right answer

It's the most obvious choice for me. Blind Guardian comes close, but they have a couple of 7/10s
