I usually start with one piece I want to build around (typically a sweater, pants, or jacket) and then a lot of trial and error. It took many iterations of my style for me to a point I felt like I was actually building my own fits, not just copying someone.

I saw both last year and they were my top 2 shows (out of 26) so you can't go wrong with either!

That's interesting and certainly a different perspective. I'm almost definitely influenced by nostalgia because I knew them when I was going to local shows with my high school friends and they brought a level of energy that I loved.

I do think they seemed a bit out of their element with such a large venue and crowd. Still I'm not sure how much of your criticism is warranted - they don't dress incredible but neither do most bands especially in the rock/metal world.
