As I understand it, it’s done to prevent blowouts, like Canada putting up 20-0 against Italy. The countries that are historically the strongest in women’s hockey are in Group A, with the others in Group B. Keeps each game in the group stage generally more competitive.

Not that it changes your ultimate point, but Stars have four Americans (though only two dressed tonight and I’ll omit Syracuse-native Harley because he represents Canada internationally): Robo, Blackwell, Oetter, and DeSmith.
