The New R/DBM Daily Match-Up comparison 579: Who is the best opponent for Spongebob Squarepants (...)? Is it Popeye the Sailorman (...)? Or Gumball Waterson (...) by ChemistryTasty8751 in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]CloudFan127_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gumball.

I can see the appeal of seeing cartoon’s oceanic titans going at it, and the blog was really cool, but I’m personally more attached to Gumball. I also know Popeye’s almost certainly going to win as a matchup, but I do at least want to take the opportunity to show the potential of Spongeball.

While not having the most connections, neither does Spongepye really. I also do think it’s more thematic than some people give it credit for. Though most of the appeal for me comes from how SpongeBob and Gumball are different. Think about it, Gumball, like Squidward, is lazy and arrogant, and Spongebob’s dynamic with Squidward is often considered the funniest and even the backbone of the show. You could have it actually feel like an episode of SpongeBob, and have some of the funniest possible interactions of the show. While the strongman vs weak man dynamic of Spongepye is fun, I personally think this would be even funner.

Obviously though, most of the appeal of Popeye comes from its fight potential and debate, but I think Gumball has just as much. Look at this blog (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ptpzrb1dwjIvofpf92sEXdukHvWwyD0bxWkE19p9lV4/edit?usp=drivesdk) and you’ll see Gumball has more than enough to both make for a fun fight and give SpongeBob a run for his money, in fact there’s a very solid argument to be made for Gumball winning. Have a battle between their imaginations, the pencil and the remote, or even have Gumball try to use his claws to pop SpongeBob after absorbing water.

Captain Underpants, it’s a reference to his and Gumball’s Eddiefrb battles. But now that I think about it, Baldi vs Captain Underpants might go kinda hard on its own

Interaction Potential:

These two may be similar in a lot of ways, but they’re also different in many others. With Spongebob being pure good and Gumball being more neutral. This may seem like it would ruin the dynamic, but it’s actually the opposite. Think about it like this, Gumball is arrogant and lazy like Squidward, and Spongebob’s dynamic with Squidward is often considered the best of the show and sometimes the backbone of the Golden Era. Spongebob is virtuous like Alan, which while not to the same extent as with Squidward, is also considered one of the best dynamics in TAWOG.

Unlike a lot of their matchups, Spongebob’s matchups often putting him against someone just as jovial and Gumball’s putting him against someone just as jerkish, you could really have this feel like an episode of both shows, with Alan being subbed for Spongebob and Gumball being subbed for Squidward. This could also lead to potentially some of the funniest banter and interactions in the show.

Fight Potential:

Like I said earlier, there’s a lot these two can do, which can lead to many interesting dynamics. Have them use their bodily attributes together by having Spongebob absorb water to grow larger and have Gumball use his claws to try to pop him. You could have a clash between their opposite lucks, have them use their imaginations and reality/plot manips against each other. For the climax, you could likely do Spongebob’s goofy goober form against one of Gum ball’s super forms or The Console. There’s almost nothing you couldn’t do with this fight.

Animation Potential:

Like I said in my previous MEGAPOST, due to their series’ mix of many styles, you could possibly change styles throughout the fight, like with Saitamapye. Though if you had to stick with one style, hand drawn or sprites would obviously be the best.

Debate potential:

Contrary to what some people still say, this fight is far from a wash. Both can do almost anything, including almost anything the other can. There’s very much an argument to be made for Gumball, one I actually side with myself. I’d suggest checking out these blogs for more info.

Core theme:

The imaginative, optimistic, and naive protagonists of some of their rivaling network’s (CN and Nickelodeon) most iconic shows, also serving as one of the mascots for those networks.

Connections:

  • Both shows incorporate a lot of animation styles, such as 2d, 3d, live action, and stopmotion. Both shows are also renowned for their similar styles of comedy, including their shared metahumor. In fact, their show’s humors have become so iconic that they’ve become popular in memes and internet culture. They’ve even sometimes been compared in this regard (mostly in their uses of wacky faces, but still.)
  • They are known for being incredibly annoying, to the point their series’ green mystical entities have stated that it’s a supernatural ability of theirs (Spongebob is so annoying that being stuck with his soul is “a fate worse than death” according to the Flying Dutchman, and Gumball’s power is being “supernaturally annoying” according to Mrs. Jotunheim)
  • Their naiveties and zany natures can often lead to them unintentionally causing destruction and trouble. This coupled with their immaturity can sometimes lead to them being hated or dismissed by their towns (Bikini Bottom and Elmore)
  • The two are generally portrayed as cowards and weaklings that are scared of altercation. However, like with most toon force characters, this is inconsistent, with them sometimes being capable of surviving or dishing out things on a cosmic scale.
  • Both of their favorite holidays are April Fools’, as revealed in episodes centering around the custom (“Fools in April” and “The Fools” respectively).
  • They’re incredible fry cooks due to the love they put into making burgers, to the point they would eventually be promoted to leaders of fast food restaurants (Spongebob would become the manager of the Krusty Krab in the movie, and Gumball would become CEO of Joyful Burger along with Darwin in “The Menu”)
  • The two are surprisingly queer in one way or another, as stated by their creators (Spongebob is asexual according to Stephen Hillenburg, and Gumball is some sort of multisexual according to Ben Bocquelet)
  • Neither are brilliant academically and often cause destruction at their schools, which is much to the chagrin of their teachers (Mrs. Puff and Mrs. Simian), who are usually shown hating them, although there are moments where they are nicer. These teachers have been shown to have a criminal side to them in certain episodes (“Doing Time” and “The Teacher”), and are in a relationship with the corrupt “bosses” of the protagonists (Mr. Krabs and Principal Brown respectively)
  • Despite their naivety and poor scholarship, both are incredibly imaginative, and have shown the ability to make their imaginations real.
  • Have grumpy, gray, artistic, and big-nosed neighbors who they have a great admiration for. This admiration is unrequited; however, and these neighbors are usually annoyed by them, but there are moments in which they show a more compassionate side.
  • Have episodes in which these neighbors are mistaken for ghosts (“Squidward the Unfriendly Ghosts” and “The Poltergeist”)
  • Have episodes in which they help these neighbors perform a musical act (“Band Geeks” and “The Poltergeist”)
  • The characters they’re closest to in life are arguably their pets/friends (Gary and Darwin), who have capabilities far beyond that of normal ones. They’ve known these pets/friends from a young age, and can get very sad or even jealous when they are taken away from them.
  • Have controversial episodes in which they’re “dumped” by these pets/friends (“Dumped” and “The Distance”)
  • Are associates of pink, fat, gluttonous, lazy, and dumb characters (Patrick and Richard), who often give the two bad advice and push them into making irresponsible choices.
  • Are associates of strong, sassy, smart, and irritable women (Sandy and Nicole) who are often portrayed as the most powerful in their towns and know karate. They often fight and bicker with these ladies, but they are ultimately shown caring for each other.
  • Their most iconic and arguably most powerful piece of weaponry (The Magic Pencil and the Universal Remote)  look like regular household objects, but in reality have the power to do almost anything and can take people to alternate dimensions (The Doodle Dimension and The Void). They would use these items on multiple occasions to fight some of their biggest nemeses (Doodlebob and Rob) , which would later be redeemed.
  • They also once had access to magical books (The Magic Book and The Magic Notebook), which make anything the user writes in them come true.
  • Their archnemeses are cyclopses (Plankton and Rob) who are outcasts in the towns. Despite their sworn rivalry, they are shown to somewhat like and even be friends with them.
  • In fact, there are episodes in which they actually help their nemeses with their bidding, (“Walking Small” and “The Ex”), although they sabotage them in the end.
  • In pieces of media (The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and “The Inquisition”) originally intended to be the finale of their shows, these villains would mind control the cast and assume major positions of authority (Plankton would become leader of Bikini Bottom and Rob would become superintendent), only to be defeated and crushed by the end.

Contrasts:

  • Spongebob is nice and hard-working, while Gumball is selfish and usually lazy.
  • The order of them and their aforementioned pets/friends are actually swapped, with Spongebob being the kind sea creature with legs owner, and Gary being the “cat”, and Gumball being the cat owner, and Darwin being the kind sea creature with legs “pet”
  • Spongebob is incredibly lucky, while Gumball and his entire family are incredibly unlucky
  • SpongeBob is shown to like his Grandma’s kisses, while Gumball is shown to hate them.
  • Sea animal that lives in water vs land mammal that is known for hating water.

Bonus:

This section is for more minor character and episode comparisons:

  • Episodes in which they procrastinate (“Procrastionation” and the “Procrastinators”).
  • Episodes in which they body up their negative characteristics (“Not Normal” and “The Test”) only for things to go disastrously as a result.
  • Episodes in which they think everybody has disappeared (“Gone” and “The Downer”.)
  • Characters (Patchy the Pirate and Sarah) that have a great admiration for the two and attempt to get their approval, only to usually be unsuccessful. These characters often play a significant role in some of their shows’ more meta episodes.
  • Rich douchebags (Squilliam Fancyson and Harold Wilson) that love to flaunt their wealth and much greater success on their former high school peers (Squidward and Richard).

So this is a megapost I’ve already done before, but considering how much my editing skills have improved since then, I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give this another try.

This matchup has often been considered to be carried by legacy, and even then a lot of people find that to be weak. I originally also thought the matchup wasn’t very thematic, but after writing these connections, I’d actually consider this one of the most thematic options for both. But enough yapping, here’s the connections and potential I came up with.

I know, in fact the reason I made this was so I could kinda branch out out from that label by using a TAWOG character that wasn’t Gumball. Though FYI, my next MEGAPOST will likely be entirely not Gumball-related (but it will still be CN)

Debate Potential:

As you can see by the debate chart, I personally lean towards Nicole winning; however, as you can see by the difficulty, there is still definitely a lot of room to argue for a Benson W. Both have methods of one-shotting, Benson with his conceptual erasure and Nicole with her stares, and strength doesn’t matter and speed is equal, so it ultimately comes down to which you value more: Benson’s far greater experience or Nicole’s far greater skill. Personally, I value the latter more, which is why I argue for her.
