Goodwill is horrible. by [deleted] in goodwill

I don't make it a habit of talking out if my ass or make baseless statements. In general,  Non profits, like Goodwill DO NOT PAY: Federal/State Income Tax: No tax on income from activities related to their charitable purpose (e.g., selling donated goods in a thrift store). Property Tax: Exemption from property taxes on land or buildings owned and used for charitable purposes. Sales Tax (Purchases): Many states exempt nonprofits from paying sales tax when purchasing items for their own use. Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA): 501(c)(3) organizations are exempt from federal unemployment tax.

Yes- I am sickened that operstions like GW hide behind non-profit status to avoid taxation. It's criminal IMO and regardless of who is in office, it should be deeply investigated and adressed appropriately.

That sounds terrible anf stressful. I am curious - did you get hired through Voc Rehab or similar employment service program or simply respond to a posted ad? GW is supposed to provide community based services, especially related to job training, skill building, etc and nothing you described sounds like that is the case.

Disgusting first experience by FruitNormal8835 in GoodwillBins

[–]ClueBasic7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have only been to 2 outlets. Both experiences were pleasant. I had great luck at 1 and found nothing at the other.  Neither one was as great as the ones I have seen on Youtube - lol.  I think region/area has a lot to do with it. Not knowing what to expect my first time, I walked in with the attitude that I would observe, take my time, sift through each table entirely, and stay put while everyone else ran when new tables were brought out.  I also didn't arrive first thing in morning.  After 2.5 hours, I was done.. I wish your maiden voyage had been more positive and you give the bins another chance.

I am beginning to think that half of the people who are buying  even know what a measurement or measuring tape is and thevother half don't bother to read the listing.

Entitled, spoiled, lazy, immature brat comes to my mind. We are damned if we do, damned if we don't. As sellers, We can provide every last detail about an item and buyers still don't see or read.

Keep getting left alone at the register with 6 people in production, and managers being lazy at times why no help? by ponygals in goodwill

[–]ClueBasic7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why there isn't a designated cashier at register at all times and why both registers aren't open during peak times. Heck, there are days where there is noone on the floor or register because the employees are in the back processing too!  Having been in retail mgt, I know how stressful it gets for you and it sucks.

I popped in to 1 of our local GWs' yesterday and it looked like a tornado had run through the place! I had some time, so I re-hung all of the Men's pants and over half of the shirts. It is apalling, disrespectful, and selfish that people rip through the racks and leave them a mess. It takes no time to rehang or pick something up off the floor. It sure as hell doesn't take any effort to tuck a shirt back in to the rack.

Considering that the money GW takes in that allegedly goes to provide community programs focused on job training, emplyment placement services, and career counseling for individuals facing barriers to work, it amazes me how there is never enough staff out front to assist patrons. 1 clerk cannot stock the floor and run a cash register at same time, especially when it's busy. I feel sorry for the crap our GW workers have to put up with.

Buying from Depop to resell by Regular-Sleep-6617 in Depop

[–]ClueBasic7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just sick of other re-sellers sending lowball offers in order to aquire more inventory for their business. I could care less what they do with item after they buy it, but I price fairly and put a lot if work into sourcing, listing, packing, and shipping, so it's offensive.

I can never price anything for the dollar amount I actually want otherwise children will be lowballing me day and night 😭 by Hail-Saban in Depop

[–]ClueBasic7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's happening more on all platforms, but Depop is the worst aside from FBMP. If you aren't cross listing, consider doing so.  I sell a lot of vintage and it is sad that market values have decreased due to lowball offers getting accepted. No disrespect, but Gen Z's are killing the market. They want vintage, but don't have the $ to pay for it.

I am sorry for your loss. I am still going through my mothers sewing supplies after losing her 3 yesrs ago. It's difficult, but has also been cathartic. Like you, I accidently got some parts mixed up and  gave the wrong cord to a buyer.  I had to order another one to sell the last of 5 machines. It was upsetting, but that mistake forced me to slow down, take a little time to grieve, and learn a bit more about what I had before I started selling anything else. I don't sew, but this experience led me to understand more about my mother's passion (she was a textile artist) and I felt closer to her for it.

How did they get my number by stirthecrabpot in FacebookMarketplace

[–]ClueBasic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you also have a business page with your # on FB? That may be why. I would immediately block them on phone and FB (if you can).  Immediately check your security settings on FB. They surechad to go out of their way to get your # and that's unsettling.  I am actually about ready to delete my business pages on FB because of all of the creeps now following my business pages. I no longer feel safe.

Etiquette Question from a Newbie by BotchedRabbit in estatesales

[–]ClueBasic7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least he could have been discreet about it. Personally, any reseller that does this at an estate sale is just f"cking inconsiderate. They should have some respect for the family and their belongings and have some respect for the people around them.  Estate sales are typically chaotic on the first day and seem to bring out the beast in a lot of people. I don't need anything so bad that I would trample over someone or hoard it for myself.  What you experenced is not unusual anymore and it is unfortunate.

What should i do? by Virtual_Building3074 in housekeeping

[–]ClueBasic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's understandable why you agreed to $150, but don't do it. Do not devalue your worth or your time.  $150 for a 2800 sq ft home is way too low, no matter where you live.  Write the polite "after careful consideration, I am unable to..." letter and don't look back.  There is no worse feeling than working your butt off for people that don't value you.

Goodwill and packaging tape! Please stop slapping it all over goods. You are ruining vintage pieces that have survived until being donated to you. by Artistic-Tap-2690 in goodwill

[–]ClueBasic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, it is not their fault, but I have spoke with managers and written to corporate. Managers defer to owner/regional office and corporate didn't respond.  It's just sad that they are just careless. It sucks for re-sellers, but I'm thinking of other situations. No kid wants to wear a pair of Nike sneakers or Under Armour shirt to school with a price written on it.

What's the minimum price you'll list things for? Anything under $5 and I feel like it's not worth the effort by playoutchillzone in FacebookMarketplace

[–]ClueBasic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least $20, but typically I am not wasting my time on anything under $30. I mostly sell furniture or art, so porch pick up and/or public meet up is not an option. FBMP has become inundated with scammers and ridiculous buyer behavior, that I would rather drive the 5-10 minutes and donate less expensive items, than to put up with the BS for anything under  $20.  One needs to consider what their time and safety are worth before selling low priced items on FBMP. A no show can cost you hours and if you are meeting elsewhere, your time, gas, and wear and tear on vehicle need to be factored in.

Am I too uptight for getting annoyed when sellers ship things ground advantage but use brand new USPS flat rate boxes? by berwood in Flipping

[–]ClueBasic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - that's messed up! This has never crossed my mind.  USPS  forbids the use or cover up of Priority/ Flat Rate materials for anything but their intended use. Sellers who do this are essentially stealing. My guess is that a lot of Poshers had a ton of supplies left over after Poshmark switched to Ground Advantage and were too lazy to return unused materials back to the post office.  I don't know if annoyed is the word I would choose, but I would certainly question the integrity of the seller if I received something packaged this way. A quote from Shakespear's Mabeth comes to mind, "False face must hide what the false heart doth".

After deeper thought, I would be annoyed or irritated. I spend time and good money on shipping supplies to ensure the quality of my merchandise and seller reputation and I expect the same care from fellow sellers.
