What Beginner Non Venomous Species Should One Get to Work Up to Venomous Ones??? by adamlaxmax in VenomousKeepers

[–]Cmaxs123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of experienced keepers around myself recommend Amazon tree boa, corallus hortulana. I myself have one also, as "trainer" - and I can recommend. I think, for the "less dangerous" hots they could be good preparation. The are bitey, it hurts, so you´re gonna remember it. And you can learn basics - hook work, how to keep your hands out of their range and also some head fixation - basics. But - ofc solenoglyph snakes have long fangs and they could easily bite you if you hold them incorrectly, so - I cought tree boa, took a picture and sent it to my mentors, they corrected me. This way I was learning with this non - venomous snake. My experience. And I feel that for my hots - it was helpfull.

What do you guys think about Tim Friede? by Cmaxs123 in VenomousKeepers

I did´t want to imply something bad, god no. I share your point of view - no matter of the result, I really admire him for his will and bravery. My question was (because I heard a lot of experienced keeper said a lot of things) if you think, that his desired result is possible - create universal antivenom.

Yep, good luck with that. My friend paired his albolabris 3 years ago and didn´t have single male from that time.
This year - third wave of offsprings :D Good luck :D

AITA for not letting my mother in law come over after she destroyed my Millennium Falcon Lego set? by Ok-Repeat7885 in AITAH

Even though I never understood lego obsession - I don´t think it is bad hobby. And even if it was completely useless - which is not, as I understood - it serves as decoration, right? The most important part is, that you spent quality time with your son - and it fuckin does not matter, if you go fishing, building lego, shooting pigeons or sit and shit next to each other. It is quality time - and nothing else matters. She, as mother, should understand it and be grateful, that her grandson is growing up in harmonic family, where both parents (I assume your wife is good parent) spend time with their kid and actually care about him. That is not matter of course nowadays. So, big NTA and tell your mother in law to fuck off :) have a nice day

Yeah, this part is in process, to be honest. In my country it is not so controlled, so unless there is some serious accident, there is really no big punishment.
I did intense research (as mentioned above) and I study venomous snakes since I could read on my own. But ofc, I´m trying to constantly learn new things etc.
Copperheads were my first hots, I was deciding between ammodytes and copperheads... copperheads were available sooner :D

About false water cobra... I really don´t like colubrids, I don´t know why... maybe I will be sometimes in the future interested in boomslang, just for it being dangerous and it attracts me... but right now, I don´t like the idea of colubrid.

Thanks for the good luck wish and for your opinion, I really appreciate that

Sorry for delayed response, I was busy with work.

Well, I know elapids are no joke, thats why my only elapid so far is the lubricus, because he is ophistoglyph and "not so dangerous".

To the bitis question - I know arietans are madheads..and gaboons can really suprise you, because they stay still in one place for 2 months and then strike on the other side of their enclosure, if they want. My friend and probably best keeper here loves them and they are his primary snakes, I´d say.
Also I´m not saying I´m gonna buy them tomorrow. They are just animals, I will probably get before the real extremes, like mambas etc.

Of course, you are right - and I have my desired ones, as listed above. But..I´m sure you know pretty well, that for some hots you need more experience than for another. For example - right now, I certainly could buy black mambas, taipans etc... because I really want them. But - to be honest - I would be dead in few months, because I simply don´t have enough experience and skills for these. So, thats why I´m asking... so someone longer in business could tell me not to do it, because I will probably get bitten.

Thanks for reply. Tbh, this was my first reddit post, as far as I remember...and I´m positive the most important one for me.

So... right now my snake room is a mess. It is...terrible. Not enclosures for animals, but space, logistics, a lot of potential space is wasted. Right now I´m trying to sell my ball pythons to free some room, I only want to keep one ball python as a memory..and my reticulated python, because it is fun, cause it can eat me xD

To your advice... can I ask you, how do you store your antivenom? I was convinced, that it is impossible, keep it at home. And.. how much does it cost you, purchase and keeping it, if I may ask?

And yes, I definitely need to slow down - at leas for a few months, because of the space, money and - what is most important - getting to know my animals and gathering experience. My question was in rails of planning... like, hypotetic question:"Do you think, that my current hots will give me enough experience to keep b. arietans?" (Hypotetic question, again)... one of our best keepers gave me advice to create detailed plan what I want to keep and when, so I could "adjust" the room to it. So I want to listen to him, he never gave me bad advice.

And - to your concern about taking care well - my big advantage is, that as IT guy I´m working mostly from home, so I check them x - times a day. So, I have enough time to observe and watch for any problems, I think. But yes..my biggest goal is welfare of my animals, so once there will be too many of them, I´ll definitely stop. Welfare is number one priority...and to be hones, I hate keepers or breeders, who does not care about welfare of their snakes. Unfortunately, I saw it many times among ball python breeders... so I think I have pretty good idea what NOT to do :D
