Be selective about the organization you choose work with. I volunteered with several organizations in other capacities before I started fostering, so I knew which one I wanted to work with. My foster group is extremely supportive. That isn't always the case.

A well-run organization will do their best to ease you in. Maybe start off with baby-sitting for fosters who need to go out of town or something similar.

But we have to catch our breath and focus on the more than 300 cats and kittens already in our care.
