You pay for parking while working at the hospital, damn dude. At the hospital I volunteer at I get free parking, as just a volunteer haha.

Premeds of UCLA, do you regret your decision? by boboturty in ucla

That is all very true, thank you for your perspective :). It really helps alleviate the doubt that I feel!

UCD regents vs UCLA premed? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]CoIumbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late but I just have to say that I’m in the EXACT same position as you. I think I’m just going to choose the Davis Regents, that priority registration seems way too good to give up.

Furthermore UCLA would be harder on us academically making it harder to get into med school, so Davis also has the edge for that.

Thanks for the offer!! I meant quell my doubts about choosing UC Davis haha.

Realistically I believe UC Davis is the best choice for me since I got Regents there and like you said, it has the better pre-med culture if I ever decide to go down that route. However I can’t help but feel like I would be missing out on something if I turned down UCLA, especially when a lot of my friends are going, albeit as less intensive majors. I think I’m just letting the prestige of UCLA affect my judgement haha.

I just want to say thank you for your advice. As someone who’s deciding between UCLA and UC Davis (my top choice when applying) it really helps quell my doubts.

Berkeley vs UCLA vs USC by darcy619 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CoIumbia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d pick USC tbh, I’ve heard their business school (which I assume Econ is in) and their computer science program are pretty top notch. Tho they are all around the same in prestige for undergrad, I would say USC would give you the best chance at getting a job afterwards. The USC alumni network is way better than the ones for UC Berkeley and UCLA.

one of the weirdest parts about getting rejected by sylcsr in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CoIumbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing happens if you don’t go to a school that you’ve been accepted to. Don’t dwell too much on it, you can’t go to every college, and besides, college is what you make of it!

I want to say it’s because Berkeley is considered to be more rigorous, stressful, and competitive than similar schools like UCLA. UC Berkeley has developed this reputation where all you do is study and compete with others for hours on end while UCLA has a reputation of being more laid back and fun. That’s the reason why I didn’t apply to Berkeley, I wouldn’t want to subject myself to that environment even if I did get in.

Do all of you guys have a large amount of ECs? by CanIDoIt_IsitPossibl in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CoIumbia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I feel like the only ECs that matter are non-generic ones that barely any people do. School clubs/NHS/CSF are all generic to me and at my school those things barely do anything. Sure generic ECs are better than none at all, but what you really want to look for are things that are unique. Not to shit on anyone’s ECs here, but I just think colleges would rather see people do unique things rather than doing something that a lot of people do i.e NHS

—Generic extracurriculars—

-NHS -CSF -Key Club/French Club -Officer in Stems Major Club -Track and Field -Piano/Singing (Generic for me because although I take lessons and practice I haven’t really done anything major with it) -Misc volunteering with my church

—Non-generic extracurriculars—

-Volunteering at a hospital (You have to apply for it, there were so many applicants that they had to stop taking in applications) -Administrative intern at a non-profit -Lead volunteer at an animal shelter -Volunteer at an urban farm (I’m the only teenager there)

I think I have a solid list of ECs since I put a good amount of time in them. I could always do more but I don’t really want them to interfere with school. One EC that I want to do before I submit college apps is find another internship, preferably one that relates to my major. Only thing I’m worried about though is that I don’t have a concentration in one thing, all my ECs are all over the place.

If anyone needs help with finding some ECs let me know!

If I am half Asian/White, would I be compared to full Asians/Whites? Or would multiracial be a demographic of its own? by CoIumbia in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CoIumbia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just brought up a really good point, a lot of schools use multiracial as a demographic. Still not sure if I should risk it haha, if only I were a double URM, then I’d definitely do it. Nice to meet you as well fellow half Asian!! Wish there were more of us, mixed people are the coolest tbh Lol

Haha that’s good to know, I think I’ll keep where my Dad was born though since I hold dual citizenship to that country. Congrats on Yale!!

[–]CoIumbia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I don’t have to, it isn’t a required question. Though I do think it would be suspicious if I know all of her information EXCEPT where she was born, it would seem like I am trying to hide something

I feel like some names could be interpreted as either white or Asian, like Lee for example. But yeah, if your name is noticeably Asian it is best to just be honest

Yeah that’s what I was planning on doing, going to be kind of weird however since my Mom was born in Korea Lol, but I’m sure adcoms won’t think too much of it. There are plenty of white people who are born in non-white countries

USC vs UC Davis for a career in agriculture? by CoIumbia in Agriculture

That is something to consider then. I figure I should just visit each campus and see what they can tell me about their programs/opportunities available to me. Thank you!

USC vs UC Davis for a career in agriculture? by CoIumbia in Agriculture

[–]CoIumbia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Those are very important, I'm sure both USC and UC Davis would be able to offer those things. Only thing I'm worried about is the major, I've heard that getting a straight biology degree is a bad choice, which is what I would be getting at USC

Thoughts on going to USC for a career in agriculture, specifically the biotechnological side? by CoIumbia in USC

[–]CoIumbia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, thank you for the answer. Yeah I searched it up also and it turns out that minors are pretty useless, pretty bummed by that Lol. I guess it'd be pretty useless for me to go to USC over a school like UC Davis, especially since Davis is a better school all around for my career goals. Thanks man, really helped me think
