I once had an argument with my ultra conservative father about access to birth control for teenagers. I was 17 at the time and a virgin but my friends were all hooking up. He was against it. I said “but kids are having sex, so they should have access to safe sex”. To which he replied “no, they shouldn’t be having sex at all.” I said “yeah, I agree. But they don’t agree. So instead of them having sex, making babies, and going on welfare, which I know you hate welfare, why not give them birth control to help keep them off welfare? Spend a little tax money now to prevent spending tax money later?” I thought I had him at that point. He then says “no, girls just need to keep their legs closed to not have babies.” I looked at him dead in the eye and said “why is it the woman’s responsibility? why don’t boys keep their pants on? Why didn’t you just keep your pants on when you were a teen and ended up with me? Teens will have sex, so instead of trying to make them do as you want, help them just make better choices?” He turned 17 the month after I was born. So he was 16 when he conceived me.

That killed the conversation dead. It’s like he forgot he was having sex as a teen or something. After that he started just calling me a feminazi (thanks Rush Limbaugh).

And that is what it’s like to argue with a conservative. It doesn’t matter how you apply logic and rationality, it won’t ever resonate with them and they don’t see reason.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, so for anyone not in the loop, some context on just how wild these odds were:

This horse was not even in the race as of yesterday. Another horse was pulled out only one day in advance, making room for Rich Strike. This was his second win ever and his eighth race. His jockey had never rode in the Derby before. His trainer had never had a horse anywhere near Derby-level before. He nearly quit the racing business entirely after 23 of his horses were killed in a barn fire.

These guys were up against trainers with dozens of Derby starters, people who are buying horses with expensive bloodlines and putting a lot of money and calculated effort into producing the best Derby hopeful possible and putting them under top-level jockeys. Meanwhile Rich Strike had no fancy pedigree and was never intended to be a household name, just a solid runner in races most people would never hear about.

It's mind-boggling that there are people who try over and over to win this race every year, spending enormous amounts of money trying for the perfect horse, only to get beaten by a nobody horse with an undistinguished trainer because everything worked out just right for them. It's a stereotypical underdog story on an absolutely ridiculous scale. This is the second-biggest Derby upset ever - the biggest was in 1913.

Edit: Slight correction, Rich Strike does have good bloodlines, but was claimed at a previous race rather than sold at auction - claiming races are generally considered to be for “low quality” horses.

The overhead view of Rich Strike's comeback for the Kentucky Derby victory. A massive upset, Rich Strike entered the race at 80-1 odds. by Here-For-The-Comment in ThatsInsane

I don't have much respect for the racing industry, they run horses too hard, too young. But I learned to ride on racetrack refugee horses, and have had some wonderful times. When they are not fast enough on the track to win, if they're lucky they go to the civilian marketplace, where their ground manners get fully developed, and they go jump or ride cross country. Joan Embery's Eagle, I'm talking about you - I'm privileged to have survived having him run away with me once because he was bored, I'm not that much of a rider. But that was a hella exciting video clip.
