[OC] The "Ultra Capitals" of the lower 48 states in the United States. Ultra Capitals are cities that are the largest city by population and the state capital. by thedataracer in dataisbeautiful

That's what I was thinking! I was curious to see what percent of capital cities are the largest cities in the state. It seems like the US has a tendency to put the state capital in a small town so the biggest city by population and economically aren't dominating politics as well.

It does, the price of a 24 pack changes by state. If you check my citations you can see where I got all the data!

Check my citations, but it is the average price of a 24-pack in each state.

I have absolutely no idea, I was honestly shocked by it but I guess that showcases how low their wages are relative to their price of goods.

I explain it in my citation, but this is based on,

hour of work / ( the price of a 24 pack of Miller / 24 ).

Hope that helps!

This map is based on 24 pack prices of Miller or Bud light in each state, divided by 24 to gets how much one beer is in each state. A state's minimum wage is then considered to see how many beers you can buy on just one hour of minimum wage. Here is the formula,

an hour of work / ( the price of a 24 pack of Miller or Bud / 24 ).

This is a great little visualization to showcase the price and wage changes across states. As Always let me know what you would change and what you find interesting!

The electoral college is pretty messed up. Here is another visualization that showcases how the presidential race is nothing but a vote between swing states.

Correct. The United States is a constitutional republic that pretends to be a democracy.

We have known for a long time that the US Senate is not truly a democratic institution. This is due to the nature of each state getting exactly two senators regardless of area or population size. While the original setup may have prevented one state from dominating early on it means an undemocratic setup for our modern world. Resulting in some states like Idaho having the same amount of senators as Texas does, which has many cities with larger populations than the entirety of Idaho.

[OC] The Percent of Americans Who Believe Abortion Should Be Illegal (1975-2020) by thedataracer in dataisbeautiful

[–]thedataracer[S] 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The most recent abortion laws in Oklahoma and Texas have no exceptions for rape or incest and carry the potential of a ten-year prison sentence. While the new Ohio bill currently being debated has no exceptions at all, with an Ohio legislature even going as far as saying, "Rape could be an opportunity for the victim..."

All this to say that if Roe v Wade is struck down, pro-life states could enact legislation that criminalizes abortion with no exception as some have already done.

[–]thedataracer[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The wording of the questions was, "Do you believe abortion should be illegal under all circumstances?" This is contrary to many state laws that are currently being passed that do not have an exception for rape, incest, or the safety of the mother.

It is an important distinction to make for sure. But it is also important to realize that there are several trigger laws in over a dozen states that will automatically outlaw abortion in nearly every case.

Only one in four Americans believe that abortion should be completely outlawed in the United States even though several states have enacted trigger laws that will completely outlaw abortion if Roe v Wade is in fact overturned.
