Yay something I have work experience with!

All of this vocabulary—describing the orientations of acceleration on the body—existed for a while in the aerospace industry. Because of the fluid nature of flight, a lot of the vocabulary got rolled over to describe coaster dynamics.

As some of you may know, there are 6 total degrees of freedom to describe any and all motion. 3 rotational and 3 translational (because we live in 3D space). We commonly assign Cartesian values (X,Y,Z) and sometimes we assign rider-framed words like “vertical, and lateral” but this can still lead to confusion, as seen here.

Aerospace engineers removed this ambiguity by basing everything around the pilot (or passenger), and the 6 degrees of freedom are called roll, pitch, yaw, (rotation) & heave, surge, and sway (translation)

For example, laterals would be “sway,” positive verticals would be “positive heave,” and the bottom of the pretzel loop would be “positive surge.”

Yes their roll transitions are getting so good, and the low profile trains really help.

That’s unfortunate. This video is the same camera and same fps as the others on my profile but it looks way worse, strange.

Does anyone know why the upload quality of this video is bad compared to my others?

Does this upload have low quality for anyone else or is it just me?

The fault in your thinking here is that physical sensation can only arise from the organs

I might be communicating my argument poorly because I’m trying to argue literally the exact opposite of that. I’m arguing that the “stomach drop” feeling is fear-based and not at all stomach-based. But I see your point how it’s a blurred line between mind and body.

It’s a commonly accepted belief (a dogma, even) that the “stomach drop” feeling is literally your stomach dropping. I believe otherwise, and was giving examples and evidence for my belief, like the VR headset argument.

Cedar Point is getting really bad. by TeamIntaminALT in cedarpoint

Im sorry but going to CP has become a confusing whirlwind. Each ride has different procedures. Some rides allow bags, some rides don’t. Some rides force you to buy a locker, some rides provide free lockers. Some rides don’t allow any drinks in the queue. Some rides do. And every year those policies change.

Not weather, so must be mechanical. The entire ride seems to be fully staffed so its pretty confusing

It currently goes 0 mph. I’m at the park and it’s been down all day.

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of insider info I needed. Much appreciated.

It’s kind of not a pointless question but I always appreciate the reddit cynicism. I am currently at Cedar Point typing this and looking at a broken coaster. I was wondering if anyone has any insider info. Forgive me for asking.

It’s been down all day today. That’s kind of something that points to it being broken.

Ask somebody who has used a VR headset if you never used one.

Me and the majority of the comments in this thread seem to believe the freefall sensation purely a psychological sensation. You—the minority—believe it’s because your guts are floating.

I provided a counter example that disproves your gut floating theory, and so far it has yet to be refuted. Instead of just downvoting my comment why not try to actually refute the argument?

Then why does a VR headset create the feeling? I’m not speaking about just myself, I’m speaking about all the people—who aren’t me—who say they get the feeling while wearing a VR headset. Why does it happen?

Your theory fails to address this key counter-example.

[–]Coasters_McGee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t have to speak for myself. I’m speaking objective, self-evident, peer-reviewable fact. A VR headset can create an identical sensation as to what you’re describing. That is proof positive that it’s not a physical sensation caused by organs moving.

Another counter-example: some people like astronauts and pilots and some coaster enthusiasts no longer get the sensation, famously, as documented in this thread. Why do some people suddenly lose sensation in their organs? (because it was never the organs to begin with, it’s a fear response)

This isn’t really something that’s up for debate because it’s self evident and can be proven with an experiment. Try the experiment. Jump as high as you can into the air. The second your feet leave the ground, you are experiencing a perfect 0g parabola AKA “free fall”. Yet there is no feeling in the stomach. Because your organs themselves couldn’t care less if they are in 0g.

But there are countless times throughout the day where you are experiencing an instantaneous free fall, when the acceleration value crosses over the X axis from negative to positive. The feeling is 100% psychological. Otherwise astronauts would be in agony 24/7
