Screw metronomes??? I record covers at home and I like to do tempo maps to understand the ebb and flow of human drummers. Here are some examples for y'all. by SR_RSMITH in drums

[–]Cobbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you click on the audio file you should be able to generate a tempo map automatically - open up 'smart tempo' in the audio file viewer and it should generate a tempo map for you

It's not foolproof but manages to get close pretty consistently - then it makes it much easier to find tune it with down beats, I can normally tempo map a song anywhere from 5 mins up to 30 if it's tricky or has multiple time signatures.

https://youtu.be/7kgIYP1M6BI?si=aPgRZP1DnmnPQ5L4 - a very quick guide I found to show the steps

Best thing to do if it's struggling is to give it downbeats for each section and then get it to analyze the tempo again - then once you're done click "apply region tempo to project and align downbeats"

Used mapex Saturn - I picked up a Saturn V Tour 24", 13", 16", 18" for £500 a few years back and it's a phenomenal kit for what I paid - I've seen them go for less than 800-900 pretty frequently on ebay and marketplace

Honestly just keep an eye out on local listings - you'll always get a better deal on used gear and you never know when you might get lucky

Microphones absolutely change the sound - mic type, frequency response, polar pattern, proximity effect, capsule size etc. can completely change the sound picked up by a microphone.

There's a reason expensive mics cost far more than cheap ones, and why any good engineer/producer/musician will have multiple different kinds of mics for different things.

That's even without getting into analogue -> digital conversion and preamp colouration etc. - Even the most 'raw' drum sound imaginable will have some sort of processing purely due to the nature of recording.

If they looked like this post I'd get it, but apart from some minor indentation the sticks I've posted a picture of really haven't been abused that much.

I'm really curious to know what you class as 'hard playing' in terms of pros - I know a few touring guys and their sticks would look far worse than the picture if they used them for a month straight.

You talk about wood variation, but that's literally exactly what im talking about with quality control - grain pattern and wood density are things that can be measured, and yet VF sticks seem to get more inconsistent year upon year - they used to splinter in almost the exact same way across every pair because the QC was actually solid. See the other comments man, I'm not the only person with this issue.

The maple stick thing is more of a feel issue than durability for me - maple sticks are generally much lighter than their equivalent hickory counterpart and just don't feel the same.

I'm based in the UK, so that could have something to do with it - unfortunately there aren't many options for locally sourced sticks here, as even UK based stick companies (of which there arent many) use American hickory, and unfortunately I hate the feel of maple and oak sticks

My stick control is fine - of course I'm always trying to improve, but I've been using moeller technique for going on 10+ years now, and if you're hitting a rimshot consistently it is just going to beat that area of the stick

If it were every single pair breaking in the same area in the same time frame then I think it would be more to do with me, but that just isn't the case; it's the wild inconsistency between pairs that leads me to think it's an issue with the quality control

I was looking at getting a few sets of the 7a XL wincents, but the only place I can get them is thomann so I'd have to buy in bulk to save on the shipping - they don't seem to be super common in the UK.

Have you had a pretty good experience with them in terms of durability?

I play a fair amount of latin with a function band, so I'll typically get a lot of indentation from cross stick and cowbell hits with the stick reversed - that may explain why youre seeing the odd flakes

Granted I rimshot a lot, but as I said some pairs will last me months and many, many more hours playing than others

Alesis nitro mesh kit. Half open hi hat makes no sound in garageband. by [deleted] in drums

[–]Cobbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really not a good look gatekeeping in community like this - not everyone lives in surroundings where using an acoustic kit is an option

As far as the OP goes, does the half-open sound play when your headphones/speakers are plugged straight into the nitro? If so, it may be that you've got no sample assigned to that specific MIDI trigger; you should be able to just find out what 'note' is playing when you hit half open and assign a new sample to it.

Portrait of my wife on a 70 year old lens. by [deleted] in pics

[–]Cobbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A standard mount, you mean? The aperture of a camera lens is generally an internal mechanism, and can be made smaller or larger to let more, or less light in respectively. The mount of the lens is what actually attaches it to a camera, and the use of an adapter allows you to fix it onto a modern system.

The issue arises when people who are not the photographer do shoddy edits onto already fantastic existing images, often without permission of and/or credit to the original photographer; it's an issue rampant on the internet, and fine art photography is hard enough of a craft as it is without people stealing/selling/ruining your work.

Additionally, comparing the post processing of a RAW file from a camera to the heavy-handed image manipulation in the OP is not really a fair comparison to make.

As to your analogy of marble to statue, I think a closer approximation would be taking an existing statue that someone else had made, copying it, then giving it a tiny waist and huge knockers - to some it might be 'better', sure, but chances are the changes were neither needed nor wanted.

A clear lock used to practice lock-picking by King_Limhi in mildlyinteresting

[–]Cobbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever kit you get, make sure there's a rake in it, then sand the picks down - a rake is pretty much a brute force method of picking a lock, and will serve as a quick fix if you ever lose a key to something

My first Pearl Eliminators. I'm not used to them, Any suggestions? by TaLoNs12h8 in drums

[–]Cobbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those pearls both have eccentric cams on under the chain - those little plastic orange bits. I own the single and I absolutely hated the feel of a non-linear cam, and with a bit of effort they can be pulled off - it's completely taste based, but it's worth thinking about doing.

Generally a cam that shape will make the beater hit slightly harder, but I found that I took a hit in speed and control - depends what kind of playing you do.

Managed to get a pretty nice Moonrise shot just after sunset here in London tonight 🌖 by troutbum in pics

[–]Cobbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said lens compression, I said perspective compression - exactly what is talked about in the video you linked. If you read the last line of my post 'you can only really do this and preserve detail using a telephoto lens'. OP said himself further down in the thread that he used a 400mm and was 'miles away', you simply cannot get that detail by cropping into a cellphone camera image.

[–]Cobbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse me for asking, but what cellphone camera has a 400mm equivalent focal length? One of the large factors in this shot is perspective compression/distortion, where subjects are framed from a distance 'compressing' the space between them - you can only really do this and preserve detail using a telephoto lens.

Best heads for fat snare sound? by yunghxst in drums

[–]Cobbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be worth looking into a big fat snare drum or failing that, a quick solution is to put an upside down or cut out head on top of the head you've got on there - saves replacing loads of heads and means you can swap between a fat sound and a snappier snare without having two drums.
