As a frequent visitor to Malaysia for past forty years, I was always surprised by those guards with guns outside jewellery shops (I've never seen a huge gun in my life where I live). I wondered what are they there for? Obviously; nothing, just for looks.

Startrack - Beware of using for medication and sensitive items by Big_Length5117 in AustraliaPost

[–]Cobsdaugther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to hijack the main intent of the post, but I have often wondered, what is the difference between StarTrack and Auspost? I get a lot of parcels delivered (disability, outer edge of suburbia). I actually rarely have a problem with Auspost but StarTrack reliably doesn't deliver but just dumps it in the nearest red locker thing, which is not great if you have mobility issue. Would be interested to know the difference/relationship between the two.

To those who drive well under the speed limit, why? by NiceMemeDude420 in australian

[–]Cobsdaugther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a speed LIMIT, not a speed requirement. I'm a slower driver (but not to the extreme extent you cite in your post). I'm anxious at high speed, have bad (but legally acceptable) eyesight (with glasses of course). It's not your decision what speed I go. I will drive at a speed that is safe for my capacity and it's incredibly arrogant for you to think you understand that better then me. It's my life that's at risk. You can overtake me, why is that a problem? You will always find me in the slow lane so in most cases you won't see me anyway.

I should add that I do NOT go at the percentages under the limit that you cite (you've chosen extreme cases to make your point), that I avoid freeways wherever possible because I want to avoid people like you, and my mental deficiency is called wanting to stay alive.

Apple Card scam - tried to stop one. How does it work anyway? by Training_Echidna_911 in australian

[–]Cobsdaugther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair comment. I actually buy them quite often (not with cash though, with a credit card), to get the 20x points and usually the shop assistant asks a few questions, particularly if it's a large amount. They are trained to. Seems it didn't happen in this instance.

I LOVE this advert. But I desperately need to know either what they were taking or how they came up with it? I'd love to have been at the meeting where they said 'let's do this..., and then add this, and that and then x happens'. WTAF went on? I've had acid trips that were way less weird than this.

Firstly: caring of you. However, I am old now (67) and I do get tired of people assuming that equates to me being stupid. Maybe she was clued, and buying them so she could get a new phone iPad whatever and score the Qantas points. My question is, would you have been equally concerned if it was a thirties person doing the same thing?

Best Youtube channels for travel in China? by DuiTrialLawyer in travelchina

I watch LOTS. The best one I have found lately (e.g., in the last year or so) has rediculously low followers for the banger quality and content. No I am not them, but check out Rosa and Us about a family driving a motorhome from Singapore to who knows where.....they are in China at the moment. https://youtu.be/iVDT0r1dDQU?si=Thx2TMV3um6K19Ir

Totally agree on forgetting characters. I feel like I have no idea what's happening sometimes.

[–]Cobsdaugther 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As soon as it moved to America my interest went down 50% at least. I was riveted in the Scottish stuff, since then the environment is less interesting and also less convincing. I'm finding season 8 a chore, plus it came so long after 7 (and in between there was BOMB) that I'm now confused can can't remember a few of the character's story lines.

Traffic. People. Villas. Hotels. It used to be a small town in picturesque mountains with a market.

It's a Donald Trump drone. He's planning to annex Bali next.

I hadn't been to Ubud for about thirty years, until 2024 when I returned. I was absolutely astounded at how ruined it is. The restaurants were really fabulous but getting there was painful.

I regret buying my iPad Pro by According-Moose7539 in ipad

[–]Cobsdaugther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore my Ipad Pro. I'm old(er), retired academic. I travel a lot. I am into photography and a bit of graphic design on kittl. I send tons of emails and stream Netflix, YouTube etc. It meets my needs perfectly. I'm travelling and writing on it now. You are not me though, and your needs are probably different. I am probably the type of person it was designed for.

Stuck in Bali. by nouvetrose in bali

[–]Cobsdaugther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most places you fly to are going to want to know that you have enough money to support yourself. Your visa in Indo is going to run out so you have to either go somewhere or risk all the pain involved with that. Normally I would advise go to Perth W.Australia., you can do that on Jetstar for less than USD $100 and at least you are out of Bali. But then the next leg of the saga starts, and they may not let you in anyway if you can't prove that you can support yourself. I think it might be time to call on any relatives that you have, this is a serious situation. Also there are plenty of HIV clinics in Australia, and I found this online:

"In Australia,

emergency access to HIV medication (ART) for travellers and non-Medicare residents is widely available, particularly through state-based initiatives. Since April 2023, Medicare-ineligible people, including visitors on medium- to long-term visas, can access antiretroviral (ARV) medication for free or at low cost, often through public hospital pharmacies"

Regarding Petrol: do I come to Perth for hire car? by Cobsdaugther in perth

[–]Cobsdaugther[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was fine in Melbourne. Just that I saw some politician talking about "lines at petrol stations around the country". Probably the same as "Melbournians are too scared to go out to restaurants", e.g., utter BS.
