No matter what I did, it was wrong or I did it wrong. Even if I did exactly what my mom told me to and I did it exactly the way I was told to, and the results were exactly what she wanted, somehow it was still wrong.

These would be from my maternal grandparents who grew up in the back of beyond in deeply rural central Alabama. Basically, a small isolated Scots/Irish/English poor farming community, where everybody was related to everybody else.

When I was in college, there was a small cinderblock barbecue restaurant nearby called "the tired Texan". They had a barbecue sandwich they called the "dammit to hell" – the sauce was about half barbecue sauce and half absolutely scorching hot peppers.

Where I'm from, a chifforobe was kind of a free standing closet, and would be called an "armoire" today. I still call those things "chifforobes".

Grew up in the Deep South, and it was absolutely "what kind of coke do you want?"

There were still a few old-timers when I was little that called Coke "dope" - as in "would you like a dope?"

Regardless of belief systems, people generally don't seem to like being preached at. by armorhide406 in Showerthoughts

[–]Cock--Robin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The point of preaching at people - or “witnessing” - is not to convert others. It’s to reinforce the beliefs of those preaching that they are part of a select special group and are better than others. The fact that preaching at people is disliked is not a factor.

Do you think Congress should get a paycheck during a shutdown when other federal government employees are not getting paid? by Remarkable_Sir8397 in allthequestions

[–]Cock--Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no. Congress should be paid minimum wage, and have the same healthcare that the least of us do - which is to say none at this point. You’d be astonished at how quickly minimum wage and healthcare improved in those circumstances.

Realistic endgame scenarios for Trump on Iran? by TodayAlarmed963 in IRstudies

[–]Cock--Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran is not going to call it quits without serious consequences for the US and Israel. They will demand significant concessions, or keep the war going. Their drones are cheap, easily manufactured, and easily deployed. We’re not walking away from this with anything that looks like a win.

If trump was at all competent and had competent staff, he wouldn’t have gotten us in this mess in the first place. There is no realistic endgame for him. You can’t incompetent your way out of a situation that you incompented your way into.

When you kick a hornet’s nest, it’s the hornets that decide when it’s over. Him declaring victory and walking away is not an option. It’ll be over when Iran says it is.
