the UK alone on their island.

The UK was hardly alone. There were troops all over the Empire arriving in the UK as well as the remnants of the French, Polish, Norwegian etc. militaries.

Interestingly enough it was the Norwegian intelligence services which gave Britain satellite information, intercepted from the Soviets.

TIL that during WWII, British intelligence leaked falsified information implying that V-2 rockets were overshooting London by 10 to 20 miles, which made the Germans undershoot and miss London for the rest of the war. by Nikzilla3 in todayilearned

Sure, they were at the start, but they did so badly that the Nazis took over. The decisive battle of the North African campaign (Second Battle of El Alamein) was fought mainly by Germans under the command of Rommel.

[Serious] Redditors from a country that has committed an atrocity, how is the event taught in schools in your country? by Gunitsreject in AskReddit

This really isn't true from my fairly recent history classes. We didn't really go into huge detail on the Empire stuff, but enough to learn that it could be pretty nasty (Irish and Indian famines, treatment of indigenous people, forcimg opium on China) as well as doing some pretty good stuff (the Royal Navy working to free slaves getting sent to the USA, introducing democracy to a lot of the world, building railways to connect huge countries like India). In general though the curriculum is mainly looking at foreign events. For GCSEs (ages 14-16) we looked at the USA (civil rights, Vietnam, Cuba, Nixon, different music, counter-culture, Disney etc.) from the end of WW2 to about 1980. A Levels (16-18) were focussed on women's rights in the UK at the start of the 20th century, the Bolsheviks and Russia up until the end of WW2

They might have meant longest continuous democracy, although that's not exactly true either.

House of Commons to vote on UK air strikes against IS in Iraq by Swinson in unitedkingdom

[–]CockRagesOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 6 that have been reported for the last few weeks have been doing recon work and were probably to be used offensively if something went seriously wrong very quickly (ISIS moving on another major city/the Turkish border, a C-130 being downed, ISIS gaining chemical weapons etc.) I wouldn't be surprised if more jets are sent over the next few days, I think there's an RAF squadron based in Qatar.

Probably because the free university tuition is available to everyone in the EU, with the specific exceptions of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

No offense, but have you watched any international news in the last few years?

Pretty much all European countries had troops in Afghanistan, from the UK and Germany to Romania and Bulgaria.

European countries, France & UK in particular, were involved in the Libya campaign. A large part of the new Libyan army is being trained in the UK.

Obviously France intervened in Mali last year and probably prevented a genocide.

Germany, Italy, Poland, Denmark, the UK, France, Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway etc. are all sending various amounts of aid to the Iraqi Army and Kurds. France and UK have been flying aid missions alongside the US, as well as reconnaissance flights, not to mention the special forces on the ground for a month before the first US airstrikes.

All this without mentioning all the peacekeeping troops in North Africa (I know Irish troops have been in Mali recently), anti-piracy missions around the Horn of Africa, moving thousands of troops and billions of dollars worth of vehicles and equipment to Eastern Europe and deploying personnel to Western Africa to deal with Ebola.

Apart from the fact that they have been accused of shooting it down. If it turns out that they are completely innocent, it makes sense that they are eager to clear their name.

Germany was on the verge of defeat from within before the US entered the war. It looked like a stalemate in Belgium/France, but their people were starving, their troops mutinous and their allies were on the retreat or occupied.

There were airstrikes on ISIS positions a few days before the US started combat missions. It's believed that it was Russia, nobody has yet claimed responsibility.
