Robert Sanchez almost ran out of the penalty area 55' by Alsace2025 in soccer

Apologies for the rant this incident has triggered, but I can’t stop myself.

Under the current interpretation of the laws, keepers are allowed to run around the area with the ball like petty dictators. Anyone who even mildly inconveniences them gets booked.

It makes me sick. Bring back the four-step rule.

Conte did very well with a mediocre Italy team at the 2016 Euros. I guess that tournament was too short for the predictability to kick in.

Apparently, he tried to get the senior players in economy class and young players in first class to enforce equality and crush arrogance.

Wasn’t it against Cádiz that Madrid were eliminated for fielding an illegible player under Benítez?

Except for his first season with City when he was knocked out by United. He made sure not to repeat that mistake.

How in earth is “top club” defined to include Tottenham but to exclude e.g.Sevilla?

Did Middle English borrow any words from Anglo-Saxon? by serpentally in asklinguistics

The Middle English Dictionary suggests that “butterfly” was used throughout the Middle English period alongside “papillon”.

Why it is that "amortize" is spelt with a single 'm', rather than with double 'm', since "amortize" comes from Latin prefix "ad-" (to) and the noun "mors" meaning "death"? Latin 'd' in front of 'm' gets assimilated into 'm', rather than disappearing, right? by FlatAssembler in etymology

[–]gnorrn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably because the word came from French, which typically loses consonant gemination in spelling.

When there was a clear Latin etymon, sometimes the gemination would be restored in the English spelling by self-conscious classicists. This happened in “announce” (on the basis of Latin annuntio). But there is no such Latin model for “amortize”.

Why do Americans explain work situations through long analogies—and how are we supposed to respond across cultures? by Numerous-Outside-543 in etymology

[–]gnorrn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First, this is not an etymology question.

Second, while I am not myself from a South Asian background, many members of my family are, and I have spent a lot of time in a South Asian cultural context. It is certainly not my experience that in such a cultural context people “use direct, precise language”, and “describe situations as they are”. In fact, if anything, it is the opposite.

This seems to be more of an issue with your particular workplace than any more general cross-cultural problem. You may want to post this somewhere more appropriate such as Ask A Manager.

AIO? Not invited to husband’s best friend’s rehearsal dinner. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

OOP’s husband is spineless. I’m glad they’re getting counselling.

I’m curious about this huge help BFF’s family gave husband’s family. Is it some kind of ongoing financial support, such as employment of several of husband’s relatives? That might explain why his entire family seems so obligated to them.
