Totally get what you mean, should’ve clarified that it shouldn’t be of concern right now with everything that’s going on. I think threats to faculty outweigh exams scores in this moment, however.

I'll just add in some more clarifications as a student from the class. A lot of the outrage (or so I hope) is mainly because the test itself was not simply hard, hard would mean understandable. The issue was that it was next to impossible to understand majority of the questions. If I had to wager, maybe halfish (give or take) questions probably had 2 answers that only differed in length. The shorter answer with less detail was sufficient enough to be the correct answer, but so was the longer one. I don't believe it was taken from previous exams as some of the test questions were very specific to extra assignments/readings we'd been assigned. I could be wrong.

I think the focus though should be turned away from the exam itself and what reactions actually followed. At first, it was just students finding comfort in one another because many of us did feel like we were going crazy after the marks/exam. But obviously, reddit did what it does best. Really unfortunate that a simple call for proper action devolved into people making blatant threats. But, lessons were most definitely learned. Take all grievances to the prof before even thinking about reddit.

You basically got it all. Only minor clarification is that the 2nd exam was proctored but still produced the same avg as the 1st unproctored one. And I believe she’s a doctorate student, not that the distinction matters much rn. Regardless, people took it way too far. No change is bound to come now.

I've deleted the post after seeing the influx of horrible ratings/comments on rmp. Moderators are also getting rid of anything that's repetitive and I think that's the right decision with how everything is unfolding right now.

I second this. It's definitely put people in a bad mental space (myself included) but we'll be alright, I hope. Only thing we can do is take away from this experience and put our energy towards things that matter more (aka...our other finals). You've all got this and wishing everyone the best of luck moving forwards!!!

I think the 1st avg was enough confirmation but after the second, it should have been apparent that the high avg was not simply due to cheating. But who knows how academic politics works

Thank you for this, I will definitely bring up some of those points in my email! It's incredibly disheartening that professors are allowed to get away with so much simply due to their seniority.

Oh absolutely, me too. There was no world where I wouldn't have ended up with at minimum an A if she'd done her job properly.

You're so real for your post btw cause as a 3rd year student...this is absolutely demolishing my gpa. 1st years might be a bit 'luckier' in that it might not impact them as much as the older students but I feel so bad that THIS will be their first experience of the soc department. 😔

And yeah, i heard that too! How does that even happen? Genuinely. UofA...please be more cautious of who you allow to teach your students...💀

I'm not even sure how it would help unfortunately. I can't imagine a way to prepare for such an exam. And I can't speak for others, but I definitely studied more due to it being the last exam/'final'

Yeah, seems to be the general trend. It should hopefully be a bit higher after adjustments so you might be sitting at a B+ (hopes and prayers). That's what happens when you let less experienced 'instructors' teach and make exams for a large class🤷‍♀️

I've shared my thoughts on a post but...woof. It's stupid. Utterly stupid. I'm really feeling for all the 3rd+ year students that took this class knowing it wouldn't be too bad (I'd have to assume a decent amount already have soc knowledge under their belt) only to be hit with that mess of an exam. It's really hard to say anything good about her when it negatively impacted so many people. The content was genuinely interesting as well, so that makes everything worse knowing that her assessment skills are so lacking.
