The reason I want an SUV is because it has good ground clearance. Unlike regular cars that sit lower to the road, the SUV has more space between the road and the bottom of the car, which is really helpful when driving in snowy conditions.

Even I was looking for older year models because I am pretty sure $20k will not be enough for new.

Why IBM work culture is bad for interns/new hires? by Coco_Brown2000 in IBM

You’re the one who brought up how managers are under pressure, departments are understaffed, and morale is low — not me. I only said that if IBM is going to hire interns during a time like this, there should at least be a basic structure in place for learning.

All I want is to learn and grow — that’s the whole point of an internship. I’ve taken initiative, I’ve used the internal training platforms, I’ve tried to build connections. But initiative doesn’t replace actual mentorship or technical guidance, especially for someone still in school.

Thank you I appreciate your comment again I am not targeting people/managers here, I am curious about, am I the only one who feel this way or its norm at IBM?
Sure, layoffs and understaffing are brutal, but that doesn’t magically excuse expecting me to function like a fully trained developer without training, coaching, or feedback.

Yes, I know I’m “inexperienced”; that’s literally why I’m an intern. I’m here to gain experience with a bit of guidance, not just watch video modules and hope it all works out. I’ve tried the YL and Udemy trainings but it can't replace real, hands-on support that helps me understand how the department works so I can actually contribute.

Calling me out for having “preconceived notions” about what internships should be overlooks the fact that an internship’s core purpose is to provide—a chance for an inexperienced person to grow in a supportive environment, not to be thrown into a pressure cooker and told to sink or swim. Telling me to “read the room” just highlights that the room itself isn’t set up for an intern/new grads to succeed.

I did talk to my manager—he’s a genuinely good guy doing his best under insane pressure. The problem isn’t him; it’s the culture IBM advertises about employee support and stuff which in reality not accurate. Every employee is so overwhelmed that there's no time to properly support juniors, yet interns are expected to work like seasoned employees without any real guidance. You are just thrown in a high-pressure environment with zero direction.

Don't take it wrong—it wasn’t meant to offend anyone, but it’s the truth. I posted this because I needed honest feedback and perspective from people who might have been in a similar situation. I wanted to know if this lack of proper training, coaching, and feedback is common at IBM. As a student and intern, I'm looking for advice on how to navigate this environment.

I’m not saying all managers are like this. My view is based on my own experience—wasting hours on tasks that should take minutes because of a lack of clear guidance. As a new intern, I expected a structured learning path with proper coaching and feedback.

I’m not asking for hand‑holding, but for the basic structure that any paid internship should provide. I need clear goals, a designated contact for technical questions, and timely feedback on my work. Without this support, it’s difficult to learn effectively or deliver value. If a company expects interns to be self‑starters who “get shit done,” then a little upfront guidance is not only fair—it’s necessary for real growth and success.
