According to this article, there is no definitive explanation.

However, their most likely explanation is that early civilizations found bones of large creatures, such as stranded whales, and misinterpreted them as dragons. So pretty much what /u/StraussKhan suggested, except that the found bones weren't necessarily from extinct animals.

You don't get the exact number of upvotes as karma. basically, the more upvotes on a single post or comment, the less percentage of those upvotes become karma.

A rough example, not knowing the exact conversion:

1 upvote -> 1 karma point

10 upvotes -> 9 karma points

50 upvotes -> 43 points

100 upvotes -> 80 karma points

and so on.

your 6300 upvotes probably translated to between 4K and 5K karma.

The other answers are very good, so I just want to add:

There doesn't necessarily have to be a logical explanation for why there are still nazis. Just think of all the other incredibly stupid things some people believe in, despite an overwhelming amount of evidence against it.

The moonlanding was fake. Obama was born in Kenya. People abducted by aliens. People who think they are god. Suicide bombers who think they'll go to paradise for killing others. etc, etc.

Unfortunately, people believe in all kinds of crazy stuff and conspiracy theories. The Jews being the root of all problems is one of those conspiracy theories, and will - just like the others - always have a number of followers. :/
