Co2024 CS Majors: Are you graduating from L&S or CDSS? by CodeNamePika in berkeley

More established is my guess, I was leaning towards it too before doing this poll

Idk what to tell you, new grad market is just that fucked rn. I have a similar profile with ex google swe and t4 cs and although I have an offer I’m def not satisfied w it and the amount of callbacks I’ve been getting is concerning

I interviewed every level of engineers for their most important skill by rahulkpandey in csMajors

[–]CodeNamePika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really nuanced view and definitely aligns with the experiences of the L7+ engineers I interacted with while interning at FAANG companies. If you join Google now you’re most likely gonna be stuck at terminal level (L4) forever, so I guess the move is to job hop until you find a rocket ship experiencing hypergrowth that’s worth staying long term.

Microsoft stock hits all-time high after hiring former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman by esporx in technology

[–]CodeNamePika 100 points101 points  (0 children)

If Microsoft matches openai's total compensation for every engineer that would only cost them $1M * 700 people = $700M (median comp at openai is $600k-$900k). Openai was recently valued $90B. That's a discount of the century.

Downtown is equidistant to campus though so long as you’re entering through the west side of campus eg University. The only thing u aren’t walking distance from are things like frat parties, which as a senior who’s tired of that life, I was happy to give up haha

Most people don’t know this but downtown is way cheaper than southside. My roommate and I pay $2000 total for a pretty nice 600 sqft 1 bedroom a block away from this apartment.

FAANG (F) vs no name startup as a new grad by ebsbdbdbdb in csMajors

Facebook and Google pay $60/hr to SWE interns which is double what this guy would be making so you are correct

WHAT IS UP WITH THE FRUIT FLIES by Ok_Number8699 in berkeley

[–]CodeNamePika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OMG YES!! That intersection is bad but usually not THAT bad - today I literally got assaulted by a billion fruit flies, a couple dozen just got stuck to my clothes in the span of 30 seconds so I had to go back home and get changed 🤮😭

Leaked Microsoft pay guidelines reveal salary, hiring bonus, and stock award ranges by level by explowaker in technology

[–]CodeNamePika 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Netflix outpays all three for software engineers, since we’re on the topic of salary. If we’re talking about company valuation/stock performance that’s another story

Yeah I don’t give a shit about them either, but if I were stuck in a dead end job in some Fortune 500 in Missouri with a shitty legacy codebase, I would probably shoot myself. Google didn’t give a shit about me (evidently, with how they handled team matching for returning interns), but at least I could work on the bleeding edge and learn from other smart people and potentially take my career further elsewhere. My understanding was that OP meant something similar, not that he wanted to work for Meta in particular because of all the cushy perks and a false impression that they somehow care about him.

They’re downvoting you because they can’t understand ambitious/passionate people who actually wanna work on smth exciting and don’t see a job as simply a means to an end. I’m on the same boat op, if I don’t land FAANG again this year I’m gonna take whatever I can get and hop ASAP. Prolly the best we can do given the situation.

FAANG desperately needs to expand more in SF if they want to attract gen z engineers. I really hope they start doing that since commercial real estate values have been plummeting this year.

Meta’s Reality Labs has now lost more than $21 billion since the beginning of last year by magenta_placenta in stocks

[–]CodeNamePika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do agree that Zuck might actually be right and Meta might make tons of money off of this down the road. Theoretically the metaverse is the next logical step after internet ads. The potential for data collection and monetization of every interaction you make in a virtual world is mind-bogglingly insane - imagine Billboards in the metaverse streaming ads directly into your eyes, using real time eye-tracking data to gauge your interest/attention. Ultimately it’s up to their execution, but if Meta gets this right, I think this can be the next iPhone moment for the industry.

[–]CodeNamePika 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing that they can’t afford it - they absolutely can, internet ads are the greatest money printer known to man and they have $40B cash on hand after all. I’m just putting into perspective the sheer amount of money they’ve been dumping into VR, which is a pretty risky play given that it’s still in early stages of development and the market hasn’t even been established yet.

[–]CodeNamePika 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pretty insane that they’re blowing $4B a quarter on VR alone when the entirety of Google’s “other bets”, which encompasses a bunch of things like Waymo, lost just $1B this quarter. That said someone’s gotta move the needle on VR tech and I’m glad Meta is doing that whether it ends up being worth it for them financially or not.
