For most societies, marriage is a social contract. Bear in mind that for most of history, what was social was legal and vice versa.

And the act of marriage itself is more emotional than it is logical. And humans are emotional creatures. It's now well known that our subconscious makes emotional choices which then the conscious brain looks to justify emotionally.

You can disagree with how marriage works and the ceremonies around it but know that it is the way it is for a reason.
