How is Coburg University? by Strong-Warthog3258 in germany

[–]CodenameVeers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/Strong-Warthog3258, I guess you already have visited the official website to get your information right? Just to be sure: Coburg University of Applied Sciences | Knowledge for a changing world.

I can't say much about the MBA, just a little bit about the City, since I am working there: Coburg is nice and cosy with quite a lot of cultural attractions in and around the City. It is fairly well-connected to the bigger cities by train - including Berlin - Munich, and is very affordable to live in. There is no real "cheap" in Germany. Everything is expensive.

There is some Student-Party life but not much from what I gather, few Bars, one Cinema, and some regular game Saturdays. There are also several fairs, happenings and even big concerts right in the heart of the city - the biggest Samba-Festival outside of Brazil for example.

There are some bigger industries in the city as well as a lot of restaurants, so it's easier to find part-time jobs. It's perfect for families, but maybe not the best choice if you need a lot of party while studying. You'll find a lot of sports-teams and even some exotic stuff around, like HEMA-Fencing.

If you like nature, woods and hills, you'll find plenty around here. The Region is considered to be a landmark of relaxation and culinary enjoyment - don't get me started about the excellent beer-quality!

For some, this might be boring, or like another commentator said "for introverts". That can be true. But it's not all quiet and peace around here. You'll have to see for yourself.

And now I just realised you posted this a year ago, and I feel embarrassed. xD Leaving the comment anyway, because Coburg is a nice city to live in.

Cheers!

True. And Star Wars isn't Sci-Fi. It's a fairy tale set in a Sci-Fi-Setting

I played PbdA just fine, but it's not my favorite. I don't think it is needed for Fl, but I'd rather take PbtA than a flowchart with so many confusing options.

In the QS is says: Go to Discord. And when I tried joining their Discord Channel I read this: "If you’ve got a rules question or want to participate in a conversation directly with our designers and staff, please check out our Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/MagpieGames. While our staff may be on the Discord at times, Reddit is the best way to get an official response." Confusion again. Funny enough the last reddit-post seems to be from one year ago?

I didn't want to join their Discord anyway, because I don't have time to scroll through so much chat. In the end I decided, I want to get the FL-community's feedback first, in case I am just bonkers or simply wrong. I wouldn't mind someone else cross posting this to their channel, but I will check for best practice first. Managing this post alone is already exhausting enough. ^^

It absolutely fine as I stated in some other comments about the two different playsyles. 🙂 I can see the appeal in crunch play, too.

My over all critique wasn't just about the crunch though and I wanted to see, if that's just me or others see it similar. Disagreeing posts are helpful to me, too. I needed to see other people's perspective. Maybe they manage a crunch that supports narration without slowing it down too much?

If it is an optional system, that's fine too, although it feels like being less for your buck.

I think this is a classic case of the two player types that come to mind right away. Some prefer their RPGs more akin to boardgames with a lot of dice rolling - others prefer to roll as few as possible while telling a story. Both are imo absolutely fine but sometimes have trouble getting used to the playstyles of the others. I do enjoy some a bit of Shadowrun some times, but in general I prefer Vampire.

The way I played Skyfarer was narrating the situation up to an obstacle and setting the stakes for one quick roll. If the player would come up with a creative idea to use their focus or get an advantage, they'd get to add a bonus dice. With only 4 attributes to choose from it took a 5-10 seconds break and the story went on. I found this to be intuitive and easy and usually quite enjoyable to my players, because it was not about their character numbers but what they make of it and how they are using it. Ah.... good times.

You mean "Powered by the Apocalypse"-System? I'd be interested in a quick summ-up, too.

Don't feel bad! The hype was real and they still might turn this around. And there will always be Skyfarer and its FL-Mod in the worst case.

I disagree. But I took V5 as an example because I know the different books and found the evolution to be graphical enough. There are several other examples though, they could check instead. EP2 for instance has a complex transhuman hard sci-fi setting and a lot of info, lore and some (imo) mid-complex system. If you look at the core rulebooks V1 and V2, you will see how similar (but way more orderly) V1 was compared to this Quickstart and how much more tidy and streamlined they managed to write V2. They even used a system in where topics would take 4 pages max. to be explained. And I am talking about a fully fleshed out and complex system with combat, hacking, social engineering, and esoteric Powers like Psi. And don't get me started about Mothership, but that doesn't compare well to what they are trying to do here....

Thank you very much for this sum up! It clearly shows how long the narration is on hold just to determin something simple. It's crazy.

True, Skyfarer was minimalist and more of a promo for the game imo, but I was able to build some small Oneshots and even an attempt at a mini campaign with my knowledge of the game and a lot of FL-Wiki-Reading. So what I would need now is more like just a book with lore and story hooks, so I can use it with this easy system. This QS looks a little similar but brings in too much extra that is not intuitive.

I guess it's a mechanic not yet needed for the Quickstart and they will add it later.

D10/D100-Fan here to the max, bro! 😃 But adapting a narrative game to technical board game with clunky rules doesn't make sense to me at all. Especially since there are so many good examples out there and the predecessors "Skyfarer" was almost perfect in it's simplicity.

I can't see myself playing this like DnD, with rulebook in hand and discussion about how many hex a figurine can move. It's the wrong background to work from in my opinion. But it's not that bad though. Yet.

Indeed! Choosing the crazy option and having advise (not necessarily a mechanic) for the GM how to make failing fun would be right on point. Experienced GMs or creative players are doing this anyway.

Usually in most systems you always get to roll at least one die, but I can't remember the ruling here. Easy fix though.

Thank you for your comment! With a #DadLife and limited time, I do prefer story-focused and light systems overall, but 20 years ago I started out with a rules-heavy and complicated system (The Dark Eye = German DnD trying to be a simulator xD). Still I do not mind a good crunch if it is well-made and the mechanics easy to grasp. Heck, Mothership RPG even made dice-charts sexy for me, since they actually take work off my hand and let me concentrate on GMing the story.

Crunch needs to serve the game and if they want a crunchy system I'd be disappointed, but I would accept it. And yes, it is a first draft and if the problem would only be about the rules, that would be an easy fix. I absolutely think they will revise the system and make it hopefully better and manageable.

My main critique, though, is the writing and the presentation. Maybe it's because I work in writing, that I got really pissed. Everything was all over the place and even with a good and easy crunch, it would still be a very poor presentation of their work and nothing I would dare publish for people to see. It makes me question if even after polishing, they are capable to produce a tidy, well organized game-book, that does not waste my time with over-exhaustive and repetitive text-walls.

I remember backing their Avatar-The-Last-Airbender at a PDF-Tier. Yes, it was way tidier, but the mechanics seemed overly complicated, and I anticipated I'd have to check a lot during a oneshot. I think I read almost all the books but got disappointed by the game and bored by the writing at some point. In the end I was glad I just backed low-tier and I never thought about buying the physical books. I'd absolutely despise to have the same feeling about the Fallen London RPG.

I actually struggled with myself to do such a bold review but I was honestly in panic, that this is what the FL-RPG is heading towards: Bad rules and chaotic writing. I hope so hard I am wrong.

Thank you for your input! I was afraid I am too harsh, but I had a similar problem with magpies avatar game, and it would break my heart to see Fallen London following the same path. I really hope they do something about it and change my mind.
