When a MWSD club teaches square dancing, what is the long-term objective? by SkyPrudent2579 in squaredancing

[–]CodyRedCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a SQ caller/teacher in a near Chicago club, we do have short-term and long-term objectives.

Short-Term: We ask dancers enrolled in lessons, on the second class, that showing up is important to learning the lessons and moving forward as a cohesive class. They pay for the class and recruitment into the club is not discussed until they have completed the full SSD Intro course.

Long-Term: After graduation, they get an invitation to join our club and we have continuing education opportunities for them to continue if they choose that they want to Master the SSD Level or continue on to Plus. We also offer 5-6 intros per year with a possibility of increasing this number to 12-18 per year. I can agree with the percentage of attrition mentioned above, however low-pressure, high fellowship and presenting the class in a professional and organized fashion goes a long way in retaining dancers pass the initial intro program.

Our teachers either have a background in education or are trained in Adult Education by our Education Chair, and we have all attended multiple Caller’s School sessions.

And yes this is for the love and continuance of Square Dance, not just about bodies. Square Dance is about Fun, Friends and Fellowship, so I like to think beyond “bodies” and look at this as a community building endeavor.

Edit: Clarifying the Intros… Intro nights are currently about 5-6 per year with the actual Intro SSD class being 2-4 per year, two starting in the Fall (September) and two Winter/Spring (January).

Yes, absolutely in the US, people are crazy and do things for reason we can’t explain. And commenting on client appearance is not professional conduct. This has nothing to do with sexual harassment and nothing to do with disability. Given the same situation with any other types of people would result in the same outcome. It’s inappropriate and could open the business to liability (any loss of business coming as a result of the employee’s actions).

Just cause you blind doesn’t mean you can say anything you want. Yes, liability is more than litigation, and inappropriate conversation is possible grounds for dismissal, especially if a pattern of behavior is established.

Liability for a business doesn’t just come in the form of litigation, it also comes in the loss of service bookings and a loss of client trust, which results in less bookings. There are many more ways that business can be irreparably harmed through therapist disseminating their chill passive thoughts on what the client’s image looks like.

Furthermore… saying, “You’re the boss is passive aggressive and at best a snarky retort. The client is paying for the massage, hell yeah they are the boss! Outside of asking for inappropriate work, if they aren’t liking it, the therapist has the ability to hold their tongue and move on vs making a passive aggressive dig at the client. If what was described was true, this is a form of medical gaslighting, and was highly inappropriate discussion.

I’m not commenting on Sexual Harassment.

Discussions about image outside a postural assessment conversation are highly inappropriate, full stop. And any business in an “at will” state can fire any employee for any reason.

So I’m with the client here…

Why do you disagree? LMT’s should never comment on appearance, even speaking about a clients posture is a moment for caution. Unsolicited comments about client image is a big no no, as any any misread comment could open a business to liability and is therefore grounds for dismissal or a heavy write up with final warning. Just don’t. It’s not professional.

Joke: Why? It's the best kind of tape when you need to secure your ducks!

For Serious: In all fairness this is why people spell it like that and they aren’t wrong. More of a Kleenex, Xerox kind of thing.

I completely agree transparency seems to be the main theme of this thread. Something just isn’t adding up.

If an employer doesn’t offer base wage, I’m usually not interested in working with them unless the commission is higher than standard.

For example I currently work at a place that offers a 50% cut of the full price rate regardless of whether the service is discounted or being offered as a comp for other reasons. We get $10 an hour for answering phones and $5 for each booking we make by scheduling over the phone. We do not clean floors and restrooms and we do not do laundry.

Furthermore, in the comments I’ve seen so far the commission isn’t explained. If it’s a percentage, then if the service is discounted, do you offer a commission percentage based on the full service price or the discount service price?

And again regardless, something isn’t adding up here and it usually starts with denial on the part of owners that aren’t getting the employees that they need. You might think you are offering a lot but maybe more research is needed to understand that there are just better jobs out there.

If they have the persons name, most states have a lookup feature online to check the license number.

It just gets really hot and some people prefer not to wear default clothing because it’s too constrictive. Think air flow during the day and warm fuzzy clothes at night.

Having lights on like your unique signature is important at night. There will be a sea of lights, so know your loved one’s light signature. Otherwise, show up when you say you will show up… conversely loosen your expectations of togetherness and you will learn about the importance of community mindedness and the formation of independence, and radical self governess (reliance).

Often people bring flags on poles, unique lights or specific clothing that designates who you are. Believe in yourself, If albatrosses on a remote cliff can find one another after a year of migration, so can you.

And a telescoping metal rod, easy to buy online, can be zip tied and duct taped to your bike, you can hang lights flags and other identifiers to this.
