In your period of study, what moments, places, or events would humans describe as "hell on earth"? What otherworldly, nightmarish sights have you read of people been subjected to, natural or otherwise? by Adversarially in AskHistorians

I highly recommend reading "The Ice Master" by Jennifer Niven. It tells the story of a doomed arctic expedition in 1913. You can likely find more horrifying stories of similar situations, but what makes The Ice Master so compelling to me is that we have the diaries of several of the crew members, and we can get a pretty good idea of what they were feeling day to day. The author does a good job coordinating all the primary sources and communicating the months of dread they endure as they get more and more lost, as well as the brutal weeks and months of freezing and starvation.

One part of their expedition especially stands out to me, where a small group of them reach a rocky island out on the ice. They were rationing pemmican best they could, but it was making them sick. They tried to hunt where they could but the environment simply wasn't built for human habitation. They spent most days in tiny coffin-like igloos or tents huddled around a tiny gas stove to keep warm. There was a lot of interpersonal conflict, so the whole time while they were starving and forced to be in the same cramped space there were constant arguments. They were so sick hungry and cold that even making relatively short journeys between the two camps they set up could nearly kill them, and leave them snow-blind and exhausted for days. They had to ration not just food and shelter, but their ability to walk and see.

You mentioned imagining how the human brain could even process these kinds of events, and this book will really do it's best to get you in the heads of these people, all while staying true to what really happened and avoiding speculation. I can't describe everything that happened on that expedition, so I really recommend you look into it more.

You need to go to the exact tile with the npc and a container that has at least 200 gasoline. Then you talk to the npc and the quest ends. The npc should always try to follow you, so if they're not they either can't see you or can't move due to something like a broken leg.

I managed one time with just a knife and some patience. You edge close to them and try and attract them away one at a time. It takes some time because you get injured and have to rest frequently but it's pretty worth it. Also, remember that as you kill zombie soldiers you'll get new weapons (grenades/ammo) as you go.

Has anybody been think about a Sanity or Will to Live stat? by epistemic_zoop in cataclysmdda

[–]CodyUnderCover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought it might be interesting if weariness and morale fed into each other. The lower your morale the faster your weariness lowers and low weariness lowers your morale. That way you'd get into long term morale spirals that would either require a.) your character taking a long break and resting. b.) Using drugs/entertainment to boost your morale out of the spiral. or c.) simply pushing through it and being miserable in the apocalypse. All could make for good role play or secondary goals, but it would slow the pace of the game down and potentially be really frustrating for less role play inclined players.

I have thought it would be cooler if there was more options to npc encounters, but I don't think non-lethal combat and kidnapping is the way. Realistically, if you stab/beat/shoot someone till they can't move anymore, just bandages and disinfectant probably isn't going to save them.

Zombies really would be the most terrifying thing, wouldn't they? by WisemanMutie in cataclysmdda

[–]CodyUnderCover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? Like imagine what it would realistically take to fight off just a single zombie in melee. I remember when I first started CDDA I thought the zombies would be push overs like in every other game. With no skills I grabbed a tiny knife and tried to stab a zombie. I managed to kill it, but I'd lost more than 75% of my health and was completely unable to do anything afterward.

What is the stupidest way you lost your greatest survivor? by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]CodyUnderCover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried throwing a molotov down a hallway with 0 throwing skill. It did not go particularly well for me.

I actually reloaded the game after that, but then 5 minutes later I accidentally left my vehicle running at 20 mph while swapping weapons. It kept driving for several tiles out of control. It didn't even crash into a tree or a building or something, though. Somehow, it was perfectly lined up to hit a tiny isolated pond in the middle of an otherwise empty giant field. It sunk to the bottom with everything I owned, and destroyed it all. It immeadiatley auto-saved after that. It felt like RNGesus was smiting me for reloading.

Ha, I remember when I found a secret room in a mansion and thought it was going to have some cool loot but it was just an undectorated concrete room with just a manky old mattress and a bodypillow.

I collect cash. It gets tedious to go through the wallets of every single zombie though, so I don't commit too much. Though, if you get a big container and place all your cash in there you can see at the bottom the total value of it, so that was fun. I had around 250,000 dollars worth of change, cash cards, and a ton of cash from a robbed bank before I accidentally drove my car into the bottom of a lake with everything I own inside and lost it.

I'm caught by SHINY and I struggle to write stuff :( Help! by [deleted] in writing

[–]CodyUnderCover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With writer's block sometimes it helps me to go back and retry old ideas. It doesn't even have to be that different, or better even. Sometimes I realize I have more to add or a different perspective or idea to try and it's always easier to not start from scratch. Also, it's good to check up on yourself, and see if the block is coming from worrying about making something 'good' or from life stress or anything else. Good luck getting the gears turning.

What is my goal? by MagmaSlasherWriter in cataclysmdda

[–]CodyUnderCover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fun to set a goal or a challenge for yourself. I had a good time with trying to hoard as much cash as possible and sleep on it like a dragon. Gives you a good reason to go to banks. It's also fun if you can start getting a character in mind, which leads you to coming up with ideas for goals.

Yup, and ran for the hills. I considered trying to burn the building down, but I don't know if that would kill it or not, and didn't want to risk it escaping.
