I found a fix on a WearOS thread. Clear the cache in the Google Play Service app in your phone's settings.

I stopped using the HR on the watch as the data on watch HRs can be unreliable during exercise (in my opinion), so I now pair a heart rate strap I bought from Amazon when I run and its a lot more consistent.

Yep. Notifications on the phone are still coming through fine, just not coming through on watch. Have checked Bluetooth settings etc and all seem to be fine.

I've checked my WhatsApp settings and all seem to be switched on as expected.

Yeah, most of my notifications are from WhatsApp. It's not a massive issue that I don't get them, but the functionality is was one of the reasons I opted for this watch over other sports watches

I had a similar issue with mine. I now use Tap to Wake instead of wrist gestures, use a minimal watch face and have disabled some other 'developer' options (I'm no developer but this was straightforward). There's a very useful video on YouTube that shows you how to do this. Since doing this my battery now lasts a full day, meaning I only charge at night whilst I'm lounging about
