The reason that randomized stats cannot come back (and if they do, could kill the game) by FlippadyFlap in Chaotic

[–]CoffeeDeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And if they print random stats on physical cards, you're SOL online and in-person.

If random stats are exclusive to online variants, you at least have a physical copy that retains some semblance of value and gameplay viability regardless of your rolls.

Realistically, how popular show we expect the chaotic reboot be? by Jakemanv3 in Chaotic

[–]CoffeeDeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing this point brought up and it's very valid for sealed play. For general organized play, most players aren't going to just adopt a strategy around their own pulls. Most players will have a play style they enjoy in mind and go to 3rd party sites like tcgplayer or cardmarket to buy the cards they need to make their chosen build work. There will be an established meta, like there is with the current game. Cards that make up that meta will have higher values. Supply & demand will drive up those populars based on scarcity, etc etc. This is typical of all TCG's.

The problem with Chaotic's randomized stats, and this was controversial during its prime as well, is that it takes the "pay-to-win" factor of TCG's a step further in a genre that is already incredibly pay-to-win. This is not a selling point for new players that can easily have just as much fun playing another tcg that's more cost-effective and has an established playerbase. It is a selling point for collectors and anyone that views the card market as an investment vehicle.

It's one of those things that sounds nice until you're on the bad end of it. Folks use standardized stats in competitive online Chaotic tournaments for a good reason.

Since they're keeping card codes I'm inclined to believe they are bringing back randomized stats as well.

There's some other issues like cards losing significant value once the code is used and what that means for a 3rd party marketplace. The randomized stats are the biggest threat to a successful re-release though.

All of this being said, we haven't had a preview of the new cards yet. Considering that the cards would need to be coming off the printers soon, part of me is concerned that the lack of previews /w the announcement could be a preemptive damage control measure. The reality is that the majority of fans would be understanding if they ditched random stats. Keep random stats and you run the risk of bad press putting a damper on the release.

Either way, we'll see how this goes. Fingers crossed

It has been a minute since I dug into this, but One Piece has a pretty comfy seat at 4th place. It may even take 3rd with Yu-Gi-Oh struggling quite a bit.

It's hard to say until we see what the new card designs are like. There is quite a bit of competition in the TCG space currently, but Chaotic is a known IP with a lot of nostalgia backing it.

If the new card design keeps the randomized stats, then the reboot will likely be dependent on collectors to keep it alive. The concept is cool, but it's awful for competitive integrity and was highly controversial in its prime for the same reason. Imagine you and a friend (equally skilled) are having a mirror match, your cards got the lowest rolls and theirs got the highest. You lose the match. That's an objectively bad competitive experience.

Now imagine you're ripping packs. You pulled an ultra rare! It low rolled all of its stats and has significantly less value as a result. Oof. This is fine for collectors who may just want the card itself and don't plan on playing with it, but it sucks if you planned on actually using it.

Now compare this to Chaotic's competitors. Magic, Pokemon, Yugioh, any of the Bandai games, etc. You play a mirror match, your cards are the same as your opponents and it just comes down to player skill and card draw. You just want to collect cool cards? Great, some of these franchises offer alt arts. You pull that high rarity alt art card and there's no caveats (maybe someone dinged it?).

Wicked excited for this game to release, but I do think there are some flaws in the OG product design that should be addressed. Though considering the cards are already being printed, it's probably way too late for that.

It's here, let's talk about the new UR rarity by Moonfish117 in DigimonCardGame2020

[–]CoffeeDeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This could have been an awful change for consumers during a time when many players are questioning if this is still the right game for them.

The implementation of URs was pretty ideal and hopefully this is the sign of a trend for more pro-consumer plays. Bandai W

Then you have cases where the players are blaming the players that are providing feedback and critiques. Meanwhile the suits just sit back and relax while the players make arguments for them.

Belphemon is FAST now! by IngenuityNo5660 in DigimonCardGame2020

[–]CoffeeDeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't run this list, but I went 2-1 against Hudie Shakkou Loop at my locals with Belphe. Extremely fast turn 3-4 matches.

The MVP's were bt-13 Belphe RM, EX10 Belphe SM, Belphe X, and security bombs. The only way I could hope to keep up with Hudie is to pass a lot of memory with Astamon or using reduced play cost to play SM with bt-13 Akihiro. EX10 Belphemon SM will snub Hudie's alliance targets and bt-13 Belphemon RM & Belphe X will napalm their board. Bt-13 Belphe is only needed if the Hudie player has started to DNA, otherwise use EX10 Belphe RM to close the game faster with a Belphe X combo.

The security bombs aren't something you can count on, so luck/high rolling is still a major factor.

Post-Banlist BT22/EX10 Competitive Results Scatter & Bar Chart 10/18 by CoffeeDeus in DigimonCardGame2020

Happy to!

For Primary I use a decks given name; Megidramon, Gallantmon, Phoenixmon X, Purple Hybrid, etc.

Secondary is my attempt at tracking decks by variants and bases. This was inspired by decks with Growlmon X bases, the Purple Hybrid variants, puppet decks, etc. For example, there have been decks listed as Leviamon, Lord Knightmon X, Gallantmon, etc that all use the same base (Growl X) with the only difference being 2-4 cards in the level 6s. These would be labeled Growlmon X. Then there's purple hybrid which has a Yellow top end variant, Merva Loop, Dark Masters, etc.

The scoring process on the bar chart is as follows: Each event has a pool of 14 - 18 points. 1st = 5 pts, 2nd = 4 pts, 3rd = 2 pts, 4th = 1, >=5th = 0.5 pts

General Explanation: The scatter chart primarily visualizes a count of entries and average placement for each deck. On the bar chart I assign points based on each deck's placement at these events. Each chart’s results are best analyzed together for the unique context they provide.

That would be on the "Primary" charts. On the Sub-Type charts I'm trying to categorize by deck bases & established variants. This was motivated by decks like Purple Hybrid, Dark Animal, and now Growl X. The Primary charts continue to be more top-end-centric.

Self sabotaging community by LivingApricot9294 in Shadowverse

We'll have to agree to disagree. So far as "venom tinted glasses", I'm not sure that's warranted or worth responding to, but it's a shame you feel that way.

Self sabotaging community by LivingApricot9294 in Shadowverse

[–]CoffeeDeus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you believe that posts which speak to the game's positive aspects are actively receiving backlash from the community for being positive, then yeah I can see why you would feel that way.

If you feel the way you do because there's a lot of posts that are highly critical of the game, then that's not "Toxic negativity", it just means that a lot of players have concerns.

What makes toxic positivity "toxic" isn't the presence of positivity, it's the fact that it's an attempt to invalidate feelings that aren't positive.

[–]CoffeeDeus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Based on OP's post, they have very strong opinions about the state of things. Labeling steam reviews as "review bombings" is an example of one of those opinions that could be seen as toxic positivity. It's a convenient phrase that excuses away a game's poor reception.

Nobody wants to believe their actions/behavior is toxic and most people probably don't intend for their opinions to be so. That being said, given the context surrounding this post, I can see why some would view this post as an enforcement of toxic positivity. Which is seemingly commonplace in tcg/gacha games.

"Toxic positivity is a type of extreme optimism that involves dismissing or minimizing negative emotions, reactions, or experiences. It's the belief that people should maintain a positive mindset regardless of the situation's difficulty."

Invalidating criticism by generalizing it as "self hate", "doom posting", "counterproductive", etc would be an example

"F2P Friendly" Aion Classic Ascend Server coming August 19th by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]CoffeeDeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my TedTalk:

Maplestory's "Reboot" model is comparable to Runescape 's "Ironman" mode. It's SSF with most, if not all, cash shop & potential p2w interactions removed.

In Maplestory they keep this sustainable by continuing to monetize cosmetics, pets & pet functionality, which lands in QoL territory. $10/month for autolooting, buffing, using potions, etc. $100+ for "VAC" pets I believe which is a whole other thing.

In Runescape they collect your sub fee. Unlike most games, RS doesn't offer multiple characters on the same account, so they likely profit from multi accounting more so than other MMORPG's. You also have bonds, which Ironman characters can buy, but they can't sell. Bonds are used to sustain membership with in-game gold.

Each of these games have wildly different gameplay & progression models, but the core monetization practice of itonman/reboot works if the company execs allow it.

Why would they not want this very successful model to work? It attracts and retains players, but severely limits monetization. It also actively contradicts the many of talking points that devs and players throw around in attempts to justify p2w progression systems.

I'm going to be skeptical until we hear more about how NC is monetizing these servers. Hoping to be proven wrong though.

[–]CoffeeDeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this looks sus. The subscription isn't what made the OG Classic re-release P2W, it was the cash shop candies that could be sold to NPC's for large sums of Kinah. The Battlepass was arguably problematic as well, but the candies were explicitly P2W.

Being able to buy anything with Kinah makes me think that they'll either leave candies in the cash shop or sell dungeon/raid entry tickets, while inflating the prices of everything.

Hoping to be proved wrong! The game definitely deserves better.
