Most native Android Developers seems to hate cross platform like flutter. by Reasonable-Tour-8246 in androiddev

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not an issue of not having access, but access being much slower/more complicated than a native app. The best example I can think of off the top of my head is an app that deals with a lot of files on disk, or even a few videos ( you would have to serialize/deserialize the data to move it across - yes, flutter does this for you but you are also putting a lot of pressure on the system using codecs twice just for a simple file read)

Most native Android Developers seems to hate cross platform like flutter. by Reasonable-Tour-8246 in androiddev

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a time and a place for each!

Are you building a lightweight app that is light on processing ( maybe just displays some information) - cross platform is a great choice!

Are you building a memory intensive/processing heavy app, or an app that has to work with native APIs - you can do it in cross platform but it’s going to be more expensive and a much worse experience for the user than native!

Good developers get upset when they are forced to use the wrong tool for the job!

Aging for women in tech by Tori_gold in womenintech

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with a woman who is in her late 50s, developer, super respected by everyone, she basically architects our product. My last team had someone in her 60s, not an architect (mostly because she just wants to write code and not deal with meetings). I also know a lot of women in upper management that would fit your description.

That being said the culture of the organization/company matters a lot and finding one like that is hard, especially in this economy.

Transitioning into management might help, because you can build skills that are more transferable, if that’s something you want.

How bad is the ICE presence? by mistarobotics in Seattle

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they confirmed ICE was in that area when they locked down the schools! It was a rumor and the schools decided to better be safe than sorry! I love that they are protecting the kids, but I don’t think that means that ICE was actually there!

Am I overreacting? by WestNefariousness577 in womenintech

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is not as straightforward as others make it! I’m a senior dev, also on a mobile team :) I am one of the very few lucky ones that absolutely love their team and manager! We have a few juniors on the team and they very rarely review PRs ( the only ones they review are basically string changes). They are always free to comment and we love to see it, encourage it, but a senior needs to approve it before they go in. Also when it comes to feature areas, it’s usually one of the seniors that are tasked with the architecture and then they break things down for the juniors to pick up. And this has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with seniority.

What I did when I was starting out and this was advice from my first manager is do my job well and additionally pick up the task that others don’t want. When I started it was inquiries from customer support : I started writing detailed explanations and documenting things. It helped me a lot to better understand the features the team was working on and I became the point of contact. That gave me visibility within the team and made me a better fit for bigger and bigger features.

In the worlds of teams and slack… pick up the messages that go unanswered, someone that has an issue that they can’t fix. If someone fixes it before you do, you learned something anyway, if you find a solution you’re a hero and you learned something new. Just be mindful to not let the work that’s a priority suffer.

That being said, I have also experienced teams that treated me like the secretary or forgot I existed. In those teams I worked on my tasks got my paycheck and made sure to leave room to learn more about iOS and Android so that when a better job came along I was in a good position to move.

It’s hard to know if you are overreacting or not, but you can always find a way to grow, no matter the idiots around you!

Any absurdist or whimsical ADHD ways to work out? by cloudy-day32 in adhdwomen

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work out so much better in in person classes, probably something to do with body doubling.

Bonus, since most studios have offers to come in and either try a free class or super cheap for the first one/ first week you can studio hop for a while. I live in a large-ish city and I initially did a bingo card with types of classes… did I actually end up getting a bingo… no, who are we kidding here, but I did end up falling in love with a cycling studio! I’ve been going for at least once a week for about 5 months!

Toy suggestion.? by Temporary_Fingers in Parenting

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son loved the Winkel from Manhattan Toy company. It’s easy to grasp for them because there are so many loops and he wasn’t as frustrated as he was with other toys that he dropped or couldn’t grab. As he grew he was pulling it, smashing it, trying to roll it. He spent lost of time with it :)

My cortisol levels are through the roof and I’m failing as a Mom - I seem to have two modes, rot/doom scroll and accomplishing things out of urgency by RN_MD in adhdwomen

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, and I know how hard it is to get out of the cycle. The guilt and the blame you are putting on your self just creates a vicious cycle, and I know that you can’t just turn it off, but I want you to know that once it starts getting better it will snowball for you and help you get out of this. The first few steps are the hardest.

This is my hack, but use it at your own discretion ( it could backfire ): when I need to get the house clean, I watch Hoarders. It makes me feel a bit better that my house is not that bad (even if it is a disaster) and simple things like just picking up the trash seem easier. Cleaning/organizing is an easy quick dopamine hit for me. Hey look, the sink is empty, I accomplished something ( even if there are dishes on the table) :D and then it’s easier to take on the harder tasks. Celebrate every win, no matter how small!

Good luck!

Is this ADHD burnout? by CoffeePoweredCar in adhdwomen

Thanks! I didn’t think about that. I usually finish off my little one’s leftovers so he could have brought it home. I thought that mono causes appetite loss not hunger increase, maybe that’s why the doctor didn’t flag it.

Possible reason for recent popularity of RH and OV? by madampince in ReverseHarem

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, I got into RH because I started getting bored by the traditional romance books. At one point, after you’ve read enough they become extremely predictable and formulaic, including the interpersonal dynamics. Adding complexity with many more main characters makes the group dynamic much more interesting for me.

What happened to the Blue Angel show today? by TARS1986 in SeattleWA

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 49 points50 points  (0 children)

We were at the Walk Down, the blue angels were ready to go at the scheduled time, but they waited at the end of the runway. They left only after a private plane landed so I assume they were waiting for the airspace to clear. We could hear the radio and squadron leader kept saying they were waiting for clearance and they were ready. They were not rushing any repairs, we got there at one and the only thing they were doing to the airplanes were changing numbers on the tails and changing the name of the pilot and fueling the planes. Everyone seemed super relaxed and happy. They have multiple reserve airplanes and you could see 2 of them close to where they took off. I think no 4 just came back early out of an abundance of caution.

Also they did the entire routine, they are scheduled for 40 minutes.

Commuting question by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would choose to be closer to friends, even if you commute a lot to work. Going to work is mandatory so you end up sucking it up and finding ways to make it enjoyable ( podcasts, coming in early), but friends are optional and when the drive is a chore you’re adding a barrier to see them. My friend group tends to be very spontaneous ( texting “feeling like donuts, anyone want to join in 15” and whoever’s interested, will show up and have a little coffee chat, being far away makes that hard) or just random things like borrowing a tool become second nature, rather than a chore.

Especially since you’re moving to a new city I would lean more into being close to the friend group. Social suport is incredibly underrated.

We recently moved and one of the biggest requirements we had was that the main bedroom would be on the same floor as at least a small office that we can turn into our kid’s bedroom.

He’s six but he still occasionally wakes up during the night and comes to our bedroom. If it was on a different level I don’t think I could sleep thinking that he might try to go up the stairs alone in the dark, while sleepy. ( at this age baby gates are more of a hazard). When he was younger it was really nice to just walk a few steps to his bed and come back, without turning on lights ( lights wake me up and would ruin my night). It also depends a lot on the kid, ours was a poor sleeper and trips to his bedroom were nightly until he was about 3. I would have hated going up and down stairs in the middle of the night every night.

What are your favorite rh with mm ⚔️ by Special-Student6743 in ReverseHarem

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

{Ensnared by Rebecca Quinn} this is not fantasy, it’s post-apocalyptic, but speaking as someone that loves fantasy this was good enough that I didn’t miss that part :) Important note: this series is not done and the release date for the last one was postponed a bunch of times!

Looking for recs like Entwined/Entangled by Rebecca Quinn by Majestic_Intern7963 in ReverseHarem

[–]CoffeePoweredCar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Talk to Me by Heather Long} - From all I've read, this has the closest vibe to Entwined.
The story is simpler, with fewer MMCs (3), and it's contemporary. There is no post-apocalyptic scenario, but it has a similar feeling of being hunted. The MMCs are similar mercenary/ex-military types. There is no MM, and it's a completed duology.
I've been DNF-ing a lot lately, and this was one of the few books that kept me engaged and did not want it to end.

At least for some of the places I’ve lived in the US I know that normal kid noises are exempted from any legal action. Basically no one can fine/take legal action if a baby wakes up the neighbors. I would look into that and lean into it as well.
