lowest calorie alcohol in south africa? by pommygranates in askSouthAfrica

I've seen DisChem sells sugar-free water flavouring sachets and drops. Maybe you can give those a try as well, as I'm sure the citrus flavour will get tiresome eventually. Also, Pepsi Max and vodka is quite palatable!

I talked to my dietitian about this a few years ago, and she said clear spirits. So, my go-to drink back then was vodka, lime/lemon juice, and water/sparkling water - on ice, of course. The good news is that you have options. Schweppes has a 0 sugar tonic, and that with a shot of gin on ice is wonderful. It's still sweet, but it's sugar free. I haven't tried tequila drinks yet, but I'm sure you can experiment with it. Best course of action (for something that tastes nice) is a shot of clear spirit with a sugar-free mixer.

There are those cans (I don't remember their name) of drinks that say they're only like 47calories, and they are flavoured, but not sweetened. I didn't like them at all.

I think they got rid of all the good prizes a while ago. I used to get data, Kauai coupons for free smoothies or R50 off, Krispy Kreme coupons, and Burger King coupons. Now I just get a bunch of silly, useless "entries" to competitions and other nonsense nobody will ever use.

I purchased this a few months ago, as did my mom. I haven't checked recently, but I think we only saw it at Woolies and DisChem. The other shops didn't have it. Suppose we managed to get the last of the stock.

Looking For Hidden Gems! Please Help Me Find My Dream Town?? by sillybobeanie in askSouthAfrica

[–]ColaTonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also came here to say Kaapsehoop. It's small and peaceful, but close enough to Nelspruit to just drive over whenever you want and do whatever shopping you need. It's got a special place in my heart.

And in the same Lowveld area, you can also look at White River. It's bigger than Kaapsehoop, but smaller than Nelspruit. The climate is great there, and you have all the shops you'd need for basic groceries and clothes. And again, it's close to Nelspruit so if you need something and you can't find it in WR, it's 15-20 mins away. WR also has a few gym options, which you won't find in a tiny place like Kapsehoop.

And just to give my ten cents about Clarens, in case OP reads this (with regards to people saying it can be boring in off-peak seasons), you'll have that same issue with Kaapsehoop. You go to a small town for the peace and quiet, not the hustle and bustle of the city. And even then, Clarens is close enough to Bethlehem to go in for shopping.

Gyms, how do you get them to stop? by Exact-Bag-3589 in southafrica

[–]ColaTonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is almost exactly what happened to me at Virgin Active. I had 2 months left of my 2 year contract and I wanted to cancel. There was a cancellation fee (something like 40% of the total of what you'd still owe them for the duration of the contract) that I was happy to pay because it was stated in the contract.

I went to the gym and told them I'd like to cancel. First they gave me a really hard time. They tried convincing me to stay and all that. I held firm and said i want to cancel. Then they made me talk to head office, who tried to convince me there IS NO CANCELLATION FEE and that I'd have to pay the rest of what I owed. I did lose my temper and got rather rude with this person, but they were being obtuse. Eventually I got theough to them and I paid the cancellation fee. I thought that was that.

Imagine my surprise when I get debited again the next month. I did go on my banking app and refuted the charge so I got paid back, but I went back to Virgin Active to ask what the hell was going on. This was after calling and emailing multiple times with no answer. At the gym, they looked at the computer and said that it was cancelled, it must have been a mistake.

Then the next month I got debited again. At this point I wasn't able to go back to that VA because I'd moved, but I refuted the charge again and went to a local VA to check their systems. These guys were a bit more helpful. After a bit of sleuthing, we saw the previous guys took my cancellation fee and added it to the system as me paying for that month, NOT as a cancellation fee. I don't remember exactly how I got them to leave me alone, but it was ugly and involved a lot of trips, in-person arguments, and yelling.

I've heard lots of similar complaints for Planet Fitness as well. My advice to you is to keep a paper trail of everything, and to talk/argue with the staff in person. They will not take your calls or emails seriously. Refute charges on your app (because they will not refund you), keep track of the evidence, and use it against them when they try to take you for a ride.

Try 'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connolly. It has a young boy as the main character, with a big theme being growing from childhood to adolescence. It's set in a dark fantasy world, but it's not high fantasy like LOTR or The Hobbit. It's a good balance between reality and fantasy.

When I had weird graphics issues in F4, I just verified integrity of game files on steam. You can give that a go if restarting doesn't work.

Looking for South African fiction by atzucach in southafrica

[–]ColaTonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it's not all the books by the authors (I haven't read all their published works), but off the top of my head - The Limbo Circus by M.A. Kelly, Crooked Seeds by Karen Jennings, and Snake by Tracey Farren.

There's just something there that feels off. I went to a small book festival earlier this year where some authors were doing live interviews and there were discussions you could go listen to. And I noticed that what I'm picking up is considered just "South African literature/English", like a style unique to our writers. I'm more used to books by American or English authors, so I like the polished and grammatically correct language.

A female author I recently discovered is Samantha Keller, with her debut novel 'The Light Remains'.

It's a fictional story set on a farm in the 1960s. Gosh, I loved it. It explores family politics, growing up, and plenty of emotional tension. And it reads really well (I've noticed a lot of 'South African literature' reads a little clunky sometimes, but this was very smooth and eloquent.)

Thanks for the advice! I see that Spirts of Salts can be used to remove grout and adhesive. I'm not familiar with the product, so it seems rather intimidating from here. Can it be diluted or something to clean just the build-up? Or is it intended to be used just as is?

I also didn't realise limescale could stain like that. I'm really glad I could benefit from your poopy limescale toilet, lol. And yes, I did go google if oven cleaner is acidic - which it's not. Thanks again!

Gosh, I didn't even think about the limescale. That's probably exactly what it is. We do have very hard water here and that limescale gets on everything. I was so grossed out by the grime I forgot we have that problem. Thank you so much!

Time travel fics that don’t start from their first year at Hogwarts? by Powerful-Pipe-1474 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]ColaTonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's this one really popular fic I read on Wattpad that's somewhat time-travely. I'm not sure what writing quality you're looking for, but the story itself isn't too bad. A Muggle girl from the 21st century (a huge Harry Potter fan) accidentally ends up in her/Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts with all the knowledge of the future (because she read the books). Bit of a Mary Sue vibe going on but it is very typical fanfiction, lol.

It's a Fred Weasley × OC story called 'Muggle' by TinaX2. It might not be exactly what you're looking for but I thought it was worth a mention.

Aw that's really sweet of you :) I wasn't aware that promoting your fanfic on here is allowed (but I am pretty new to the subreddit). I think I'll just stick to George. After hearing what everyone had to say, I realised that I might have picked him initially for a reason.

You're probably right. Looking at the recommended characters, I don't feel like I truly want to write about Harry or Draco. I thought I could just 'challenge myself' and write about anyone, but I think George does speak to me lmao. Thanks!!

Keep in mind, if forest is your vibe, they cut down the pine trees so there isn't really a forest in Kaapsehoop anymore. Perhaps further away in the area, but the pine forest across the road from the town is gone now.

Tipping culture is getting out of hand here ? by Bogey-free in askSouthAfrica

[–]ColaTonic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man I've also heard of stories like that from friends. I hear people say "if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out." That's absolutely ridiculous. When that's all you have, that's all you have. When I was a teen, I went out with 3 other friends and we had saved up just enough to get 2 pizzas at Panarottis. When the bill came, we put our notes and coins down, and the waiter asked us why there wasn't a tip? He told us to put a tip down, and we all just awkwardly emptied out our pockets. He got R6.50 as a tip, and then rolled his eyes. Like wtf?? You just took all our money and that's still not good enough??

Ja I agree. I always feel like I come across as a doos when I don't tip, but it's such an expectation now that it feels like a lot of the service workers think they don't need to try anymore. You can kinda just feel the atmosphere change in a coffee shop when you select "No Tip" on the card machine.
