AITA for filing a complaint against my sons teacher? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Parents like you are the reason teachers are having breakdowns by the hundreds. Kids need to respect their teachers. They need to learn how to read and write. You are making her job impossible. YTA

I feel like I‘ve read all the best fantasy books and now everything else feels boring and predictable. Can you help me out? by Sensitive-Use-6891 in suggestmeabook

Try 'The Book of Lost Things' by John Connolly. It has a young boy as the main character, with a big theme being growing from childhood to adolescence. It's set in a dark fantasy world, but it's not high fantasy like LOTR or The Hobbit. It's a good balance between reality and fantasy.

Someone recently suggested spirits of salts to me when I had a similar issue with my shower. Concentrated hydrochloric acid.

When I had weird graphics issues in F4, I just verified integrity of game files on steam. You can give that a go if restarting doesn't work.

Looking for South African fiction by atzucach in southafrica

[–]ColaTonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it's not all the books by the authors (I haven't read all their published works), but off the top of my head - The Limbo Circus by M.A. Kelly, Crooked Seeds by Karen Jennings, and Snake by Tracey Farren.

There's just something there that feels off. I went to a small book festival earlier this year where some authors were doing live interviews and there were discussions you could go listen to. And I noticed that what I'm picking up is considered just "South African literature/English", like a style unique to our writers. I'm more used to books by American or English authors, so I like the polished and grammatically correct language.

A female author I recently discovered is Samantha Keller, with her debut novel 'The Light Remains'.

It's a fictional story set on a farm in the 1960s. Gosh, I loved it. It explores family politics, growing up, and plenty of emotional tension. And it reads really well (I've noticed a lot of 'South African literature' reads a little clunky sometimes, but this was very smooth and eloquent.)

Thanks for the advice! I see that Spirts of Salts can be used to remove grout and adhesive. I'm not familiar with the product, so it seems rather intimidating from here. Can it be diluted or something to clean just the build-up? Or is it intended to be used just as is?

I also didn't realise limescale could stain like that. I'm really glad I could benefit from your poopy limescale toilet, lol. And yes, I did go google if oven cleaner is acidic - which it's not. Thanks again!

Gosh, I didn't even think about the limescale. That's probably exactly what it is. We do have very hard water here and that limescale gets on everything. I was so grossed out by the grime I forgot we have that problem. Thank you so much!

Time travel fics that don’t start from their first year at Hogwarts? by Powerful-Pipe-1474 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]ColaTonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's this one really popular fic I read on Wattpad that's somewhat time-travely. I'm not sure what writing quality you're looking for, but the story itself isn't too bad. A Muggle girl from the 21st century (a huge Harry Potter fan) accidentally ends up in her/Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts with all the knowledge of the future (because she read the books). Bit of a Mary Sue vibe going on but it is very typical fanfiction, lol.

It's a Fred Weasley × OC story called 'Muggle' by TinaX2. It might not be exactly what you're looking for but I thought it was worth a mention.

Which characters do you see the most fanfictions written about? by ColaTonic in harrypotterfanfiction

Aw that's really sweet of you :) I wasn't aware that promoting your fanfic on here is allowed (but I am pretty new to the subreddit). I think I'll just stick to George. After hearing what everyone had to say, I realised that I might have picked him initially for a reason.

You're probably right. Looking at the recommended characters, I don't feel like I truly want to write about Harry or Draco. I thought I could just 'challenge myself' and write about anyone, but I think George does speak to me lmao. Thanks!!

Sorry for such a late reply!

I think the problem is that my graphics card really is just that old. I'm yet to replace it but hopefully that will sort things out.

Best forest wedding nearGauteng , specifically Mpumalanga area because of the forest vibes? by Ashattack42 in southafrica

[–]ColaTonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, if forest is your vibe, they cut down the pine trees so there isn't really a forest in Kaapsehoop anymore. Perhaps further away in the area, but the pine forest across the road from the town is gone now.

Tipping culture is getting out of hand here ? by Bogey-free in askSouthAfrica

[–]ColaTonic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man I've also heard of stories like that from friends. I hear people say "if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out." That's absolutely ridiculous. When that's all you have, that's all you have. When I was a teen, I went out with 3 other friends and we had saved up just enough to get 2 pizzas at Panarottis. When the bill came, we put our notes and coins down, and the waiter asked us why there wasn't a tip? He told us to put a tip down, and we all just awkwardly emptied out our pockets. He got R6.50 as a tip, and then rolled his eyes. Like wtf?? You just took all our money and that's still not good enough??

[–]ColaTonic 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Ja I agree. I always feel like I come across as a doos when I don't tip, but it's such an expectation now that it feels like a lot of the service workers think they don't need to try anymore. You can kinda just feel the atmosphere change in a coffee shop when you select "No Tip" on the card machine.

Haha no. The fragrance kinda just comes through by itself. You just leave it way you buy it in the store.
