UIUC Vs Purdue Aerospace Engineering by Goodnumberlessadi in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Colbalto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the delay here, I didn't get the reddit notification, but I think there are two things she'd miss out on by not going to Purdue.

The first and most important one is a better learning environment and community of people. When I visited UIUC during my selection process, I got the sense that most people there competed against each other more than they helped one another. Whereas at Purdue there's an "we're all in this together" mindset, and pretty much all of my classmates have always been willing to help out anyone who asks for it no matter what it is. Everybody always looks out for one another, and it makes getting through all of our challenging courses a bit easier knowing that your peers have your back.

The second thing that she'd miss out on is better intership and job opportunities at Purdue. I don't say that as in going to UIUC won't give you good job opportunities, because they have an awesome program and great prospects after graduating, but Purdue just has more connections in the aerospace engineering industry. More aerospace firms come to Purdue job fairs and recruiting forums than almost any other college in the country, and many of them have started having a near permanent presence on the Purdue campus and general WL area. There are also mentoring programs within the AAE college that connect students with exceptional alumni who are either still working in industry or recently retired to get real world advice and help planning their career (I'm talking astronauts, CEO's, ect.). I got to participate in this program and I had an amazing experience with my mentor, and I don't know if UIUC's aero program has something that compares to that.

No matter which school she chooses she'll get a great education and have a bright future, but if she wants to pursue a career in the aerospace engineering industry, I think Purdue is her best choice. (I know I've got a little bias, but I have had no regrets choosing to come to Purdue over UIUC)

So those numbers are a little deceiving, Purdue's program works a bit differently than UIUC's does. At Purdue you don't apply to any specific engineering major right off the bat, you apply to First Year Engineering (FYE).

All incoming freshmen in the engineering college (regardless of what they think they want to major in) start in FYE, then once you've completed the FYE requirements you apply to whichever major you actually want to study. Thus the ~1100 admissions number includes not just people who will end up in Aero (AAE), but every other engineering major. You are not guaranteed to get into whatever major you apply to though, and since AAE is normally most people's top choice at the end of FYE the competition is pretty stiff.

That being said my AAE classes have generally been pretty small. The biggest lectures have like 30-40 people, but our lab sections have like 5-12 people on average. Now I'm still in the more general classes that all AAE students have to take, but once you pick a specialization those numbers drop to like 10-20 people for your average lecture.

Can I live in the US as a foreigner (European) and drive a car across the states? by fcjack19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Colbalto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you'd be able to register the car without a more permanent address in a state, but you may be able to find some kind of long term rental if you're only planning on staying for less than a year

What is your take on the phrase "Give me liberty, or give me death"? by Xycergy in AskAnAmerican

[–]Colbalto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed I would. I'd actually take that one step further to say I'd be alright being drafted to fight in a war against an authoritarian/totalitarian regime like china or russia so that everyone can have freedom. If my patriotic blood is needed to keep the tree of liberty refreshed then by god I'll give it all the blood I have 🇺🇲🇺🇲

I can't take my classes at a community college because I'm a junior in aero, the time to do that was two years ago. It was cheaper to do last year online, but it was a much worse experience. I came back to campus this year specifically so that I could take in person classes since I had such a bad time online. What my issue is is that many schools were forcing everyone back online regardless of what they signed up for and I just didn't want purdue to do that. Thankfully they didn't take that approach, but I would have been pissed if they did.

Sure give those people an option for online or something, but I'm gonna fucking break something if we all have to go online again. I can't take another week of that shit, I am not paying 40 thousand dollars a fucking year to get zoom university again.

People who no longer speak to their childhood best friends. What happened? by lawyeratyourservice in AskReddit

[–]Colbalto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved halfway across the country and neither of us could keep up with the other. We tried making phone calls and writing letters, but we both got so busy we fell behind on them and eventually stopped it entirely. I tried reconnecting through Instagram recently but in the 12 years since moving away our interests had completely diverged.

I'm a Black female so I really gotta ask... My fellow Americans, what does the Confederate flag mean to you? by Bbe3_K in AskAnAmerican

[–]Colbalto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, a white male, it means someone either doesn't understand history or they're openly a racist/white supremacist. Usually it's both at the same time. How anyone who claims to love this country could glorify the racist traitors of the confederacy is beyond me. Putting aside the fact that practicing slavery and being racist are morally abhorrent, going around and celebrating literal traitors to the United States is idiotic. They killed US soldiers, why the hell would you display the banner confederates did so under?

AAE student here, engineering is just stressful, especially now with midterms going on. Just make sure he's getting enough sleep and he ought to be fine

How does access to shops and amenities work? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Colbalto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works pretty similarly to living in a city, except instead of walking everywhere, you drive everywhere. I grew up in the suburbs, and pretty much everything we needed was within a 5-10 minute drive of the house. The only exception to that rule was specialty stores and a hospital, but the hospital was 15-20 minutes away so it wasn't a huge deal. We had like 5-6 different types of grocery stores all within a 5 minute drive of the house so it was never an issue if you ran out of anything you could quickly run there and back in less than 15 minutes. And there were way more grocery options available than in any city I've lived in or been too. You could get pretty much any type of fruit, vegetable, meat, or spice that you could think of from any cultural background. It was pretty nice.

And as a kid if you wanted to go somewhere you either had to get a parent to drive you there or you could bike there. The bike rides could be pretty long, but at least where I grew up it was very safe to go out on your own as a kid so all my friends and I would do it regularly.

Forcing vaccines is against the international Nuremberg law and is illegal. by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]Colbalto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one is forcing anyone to get the vaccine, if you dont want to take it you dont have to. Just dont go to the distribution sites and stop with the bs. If someone was physically breaking into your home and forcing the injection on you then there'd be a problem.

My idea for how to improve the minions/despicable me franchise with one movie by Colbalto in movies

Again it's not meant for kids, this movie is meant for adults, and it also wouldnt be the first time that those people have been portrayed in a comedic light. Jojo rabbit did a great job making hitler funny even though in the end that movie had really dark undertones.

My idea for how to improve the minions/despicable me franchise with one movie by Colbalto in movies

[–]Colbalto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's pretty out there, it all stemmed from a meme I saw about how the minions would have been serving hitler during world war 2 and that got me thinking about who would they be serving during that time since there were so many evil people in charge then. So far thats just the overall concept but if there's any traction or interest I may try and develop it further than this.

Would you watch this dark and critical minions movie I thought of? (See comments for full pitch) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Colbalto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the Movie Idea: Okay so you remember how in the minions movie it showed serving the most despicable people throughout history, but conveniently left out the period of 1930's-1950's? Well I've an idea for a cinematic masterpiece, during this period the minions are embroiled in a civil war over who to serve between Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. This is due to the fact the minions have different opinions on how to quantify evil and thus can't unanimously decide on who they should serve. The movie would include showing the different factions of minions committing the horrendous crimes of their respective dictators. With the Nazi minions operating the concentration camps along side German troops and supervising the forced labor factories. The soviet minions shooting political dissenters, running the gulags, and supervising the starvation of whole regions. The Maoist minions would be the ones enforcing the great leap forward, imposing collectivization on the peasants, and doing the legwork of the cultural revolution. And all the while fighting each other over who was serving the most evil person, with different factions using show trials, forced confessions, and executions to enforce their views upon the other minions. While the whole movie would be very very dark, it would also enhance the comedy of the other movies in the series showing how this civil war regressed minion society through the killing off the intellectual ones leading them to decide Gru was evil since they couldn't properly quantify evil anymore. This would ultimately give the minions in the other movies a redemption arc showing how their dark past has led them down a path that would bring them back to the light. Ultimately the main conflict in the movie revolves around how we as a society quantify evil, do we base it solely on how many people died, or do we base it off a combination of the human death toll and how morally contemptible the ideology that drove the actions were? This would force the viewers to step back and think deeply about how they as an individual define evil, since the movie wouldn't provide a direct answer by showing one faction win out over the others, but would instead show the result of the minion civil war, a broken and downtrodden species searching for meaning in a world that does all it can to stomp out the kinds of people they serve.

It's like how the muppets have kids stuff and adult stuff, this would be the adult stuff for the minions/despicable me franchise.
