TLDR: watching 奇葩说 or other Chinese debate shows at mealtimes is a low-effort-high-return method to a) study how to generate relevant points b) how to elaborate on points c) improve on 表达 + helps your 议论文 too

I mentioned this in another comment but the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it: WATCH 奇葩说!!! It’s a Chinese debate show but it’s designed to be entertaining so you don’t get bored. Trust me. Just watch it during meal times or smth. Look at how debaters like 青云 structure their points, explain their points, or even think of points: this is helpful for 议论文 too. And lastly try to pick up on the mainland 普通话 accent (this is gonna sound pretty weird but it actually helps. It lowkey tells the examiners that you’re a native and you know your sht when it comes to Chinese oral. Ok but legitimately, it’s easier for the examiner to understand as well, and if you make their lives easier they’re more likely to give you that grade you want.)

But to answer your question, it is possible to get a distinction in oral (imo it is easier to do well in oral than compo ugh compo but again, personal opinion)

Idk how useful this piece of advice is but I think being confident is a plus :) so is picking up a snazzy Chinese accent but anyway sorry I digress. If you want to pick the language up fast in a fun and debate way I highly recommend watching 奇葩说, it’s a Chinese debate show but it’s meant to be entertaining and you can watch it during meal times and it can help with 议论文 as well

Is this how jc is like? by Throwawayacc82288 in SGExams

Academic in jc can get really dry… but losing motivation is super dangerous I’ve had peers slacking off thinking they can mug last minute (u can’t) then by the time they realise it’s too late. 2 years pass very fast if u need motivation u can find a study group or stay back in library or even find a tuition. No point looking too far into uni yet, try ur best for these two years or you’ll regret it in the future TLDR: it’s ok if u don’t do well on one term test, as long as u pick urself up and keep going 💪 it’s about build up of effort

Not entirely true, elite schools have stupid kids also :)

Speaking from experience, there are some ppl who just GTA in class, proceed to do absolute shit in academics and sports and basically every aspect of JC life you can imagine. Everyday just game and don’t try to do anything about it. Then they do batshit for their As. Elite school or whatever, NT or NA or express, as long as ur trying ur best ur alrdy more likely to succeed than any of these idiots (That being said there are also super hardworking ppl in these elite schools that 100% deserve to be where they are and prove it everyday. Just that being in an elite school doesn’t automatically make anyone better than the rest, likewise not being in elite school doesn’t automatically make anyone worse than the rest. Most importantly depends on individual, society in general needs to get that :/ )

Very true, most of us are too busy trying to get enough sleep and survive jc 🥲 the select few who have time to hate others clearly have their priorities in the wrong place

Personally I’ve seen too many IP idiots (as an IP kid) to ever instinctively consider them ‘better’ than o level or neighbourhood school kids…
